Abandoned player ship?

if you crew up with a pirate legend then they can open the entrance for the crew and everyone can go have a look.

there's not much down there that you'll be able to do though. it's just a few merchants and a faction dude for athena. like a mini outpost really, but where everything requires pirate legend or some level of athena's fortune.

but you can get in and have a look even before hitting PL

It's not that uncommon for people to bounce after selling without lowering their flag for 1 of a few reasons

1. They don't care
2. They intentionally leave it for other people
3. They forget to lower it
4. Someone/people go afk so there isn't a majority vote to lower so people just leave after they get tired of waiting

The fact it was there for a while made me think they were still around somewhere.

It's not usually immediate there is some time there

also my guess would be that if they dc'd in a way that gives them the 5 minute timer to rejoin their game the ship would stay up for a bit

Most likely they were in hideout. Stashing things there. I had been hiding things in hideout for others to find. : You can drop things behind the portal.
The funniest is watching people looking for Reapers chest or FOTD key at the outpost. :)

I yelled hello through the trumpet, used pirate chat etc just to be friendly (I like doing that.) No one replied or showed up.

I thought they must be turning stuff in, but I waited a good 2 or 3 minutes. The sloop had a grade 5 OoS emissary flag, so I sunk the ship and sold the flag to the reapers.

The captain never showed even whilst I cannoned his ship, grabbed the flag and sailed away.

Was it a glitch? Was he AFK at a really bad time? Couldn't work it out.

When you don't leave the game through the ingame option "leave game", the ship stays for about 10 minutes, so you could rejoin...
Probably those guys didn't know, they can put down the flag and receive gold and rep for that, and just closed the game...
