I was very lucky and got a Series X console a few months ago. I was super excited to see Sea of Thieves at 120 frames per second at 4k, but it seems it caps at 60 frames per second when going higher than 1080p. I believe that the Series X components can definitely handle 4k at 120hz or at least 1440p at such frames. I know there isn't a large group of people with next gen consoles, but I think it would really encourage people to play the game just based off of the incredible graphics at high performance. I know for me at least that I always search for games that are optimized for Series X and sometimes start playing regularly on such games. As next gen consoles continue to be produced, more players will want such a change. Adding the option of 120 frames per second with no penalty would be a exceptional change and bring in more players.
Why can I not run 4k and 120hz on a Series X?
@magicstick7499
Does your TV/monitor Support 120hz ?
If it does than are you connected directly to port enabled for 120hz ?
Also is the cable you are using to connect capable of 120hz. (this is one of the most overlooked items) Not all HDMI cables are capable of 4k120 hz. Actually very few are capable of that because they have to be 48 Gbps rated, nothing below of that will work.
I threw my cable that was included and purchased one from BestBuy magnolia because those are tested individually. It could be simply bad cable.@kommodoreyenser said in Why can I not run 4k and 120hz on a Series X?:
Series X was only built for and targeting 4k60Hz gameplay. Thing doesn’t have an RTX 3090 in it so just forget 4k120Hz+ as that is a pipe dream.

Thats an article talking about 4k60Hz OR 1080p120Hz being supported.
What you have said is partially correct though, given the right TV or monitor and a HDMI 2.0 certified cable, the series X should have a 120Hz refresh rate at 1080p in SoT. The FPS matching it is less likely on higher graphics settings.
@jadescissors32 let me help you out there bud. Actually the options on series X are 4k60Hz or 1080p120Hz with the frame rate matching the refresh rate:
@kommodoreyenser
Not sure about that article but Xbox series X is perfectly capable of 120 fps and 4k
Here are steps are to enable, and whats needed.Quote:

4K gaming at 120 frames per second is available if you have all of the following:an Xbox Series X console an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 a TV that supports HDMI 2.1
To enable 4K gaming at 120 Hz, press the Xbox button to open the guide, and then select Power & system > Settings > General > TV & display options. Make sure your Resolution is set to 4K UHD, and set your Refresh rate to 120 Hz.
"@jadescissors32 would love to see a video of frame rate at 4K 120hz in SoT. The link you provided for enabling it mentions nothing of SoT being supported at that refresh rate. See the link at the bottom for a screenshot of what it tells you when switching to 120Hz mode in-game.
For reference my rig with a 10700k, 3200mbps ddr4 ram, m.2 drives, and a Strix 3090 OC sees 120-144 FPS at 1440p 144Hz and max settings.
The GPU in a series X is well below the same capabilitiesas a 3090. 4K 120hz is like 1440p at 240hz when looking at data rate.

"What it tells is how to enable 120fp/4k (or even both at same time) IF the game supports it. But some games (SoT is good example) are just to demanding to be run by xbox series x with both of them on at the same time as you can't put best components in it if you want to sell for 500£ it without making to much of loss.
As an example, I play on 1080p monitor and have an 3080 (little bit an over kill i know [about 700£? card at cheapest] ) and I am able to pull out from 120 to 240 frames (240 being average on the seas so game doesn't have much to do with gpu) and island average is about 160 when not moving and about 120 when moving around and fast turns dropping it to 80-100frames.
With lowest possible settings it's about 160-280fps on Full HD so 4k would be.... about 40-50% less frames so for SoT to run on console on 4k with stable 120fp they would have to lower graphics to lowest which would pretty much eliminate the whole reason to play on 4k to begin with and still have some drops in fps.
I can check frame rates with 4k tv if you wish so.
@kommodoreyenser Ah I see what you mean, Did not even payed attention to SoT part. I moved my XBOX to my Ultra wide and have not checked after that.
Ultrawide is squeezed 4K but it must be some barcoded limit that if you are at 1080P regardless how wide the screen than it does 120 fps. but if you are in 16:9 4k than drops.@jadescissors32 all good. Just wanted to make sure OP had the correct info. SoT is pretty intense for 4K 120Hz for the series X GPU. 4K 60Hz is still pretty nice for a console and since this isn’t an FPS, shouldn’t be much difference for most people.
