How many newplay will be left after the new update is released?

  • A thought has visited me recently. Pirates of the Caribbean is a great movie series, Johnny is a great pirate. Therefore, it is not surprising that after the update a lot of new players will come to the game. Most likely, these will be teenagers, children) They will come with admiration looking at the beautiful and colorful world of the game. They will sail in front of the boat, into the distance for adventures. The sails will be blown by the wind, flags will fly proudly. Newbies will feel like pirates, fearsome and brave. They will grab the first treasures (oh, I remember that feeling, it's very exciting). And then, winged pirates will be met by those for whom they are just a bargaining chip, just free delivery of loot.
So the newcomers will face the usual phenomenon for this world - the destruction of an empty ship near the port, camping on the ship, screams in the world chat "noob is dead", toxicity, sarcasm, lack of progress in the game if you are sunk. Thousands of new souls will be overwhelmed by injustice.

Many of them will stay, huh?

  • @vareg1986 I dare say this update will attract many new players, young and old alike. Some of those will fall in love with it, others will hate it and move on to something else.

At the end of the day they'll never please everyone, and they shouldn't try to.

  • Worry about yourself, pirate.

Let Rare worry about the state of the game. They have been increasing the playerbase every year since launch.
More players inbound for sure, new and returning.

The only thing you can control is what your attitude is going to be.

  • They will also have to deal with reading over exaggerated and whiny post like this that contribute nothing good to the game or forums.

In the over 5000 hours of playing this game I have come across a handful of extremely toxic crews. This game is no where near CoD or rust.

The new players will learn just as most of us have with time.

    Stop prom

The most toxic communication I have heard over my 3 years and ~1,500 hours on the sea comes from this age demographic. So what are you getting at? Play style has no toxicity beyond purposeful team damage and sabotage, only the parroting rhetoric that individuals spew can truly be considered toxic in this game.

  • I really think the majority of people that struggle with this game are those that come from an environment where you get what you want when you want and throwing a fit gets you what you want faster. When all else fails you accuse them of stuff and things and try to get it that way. Winning is all that matters and the sea revolves around them.

I've sailed thousands of hours and played with thousands of pirates. I've fought hundreds and hundreds of crews. I've heard and seen most of what can be heard and seen out there and just about every time I've seen/heard something negative on my own open crew or other crews they fit into the above category. Sure there are people that just randomly say/do stuff that would offend/upset a lot of people but it's very much the minority.

The community in the game is largely and shockingly non toxic most of the time. As someone that has been involved in one thing or another on the net since the 90s I can honestly say that the people here are pretty darn decent. I don't necessarily like everyone I interact with but most of them aren't doing anything wrong even if they aren't a ray of sunshine.

I think the devs and the well known streamers and the people that put so much effort into being a part of the community do a good job of putting out the messaging that yes we are pirates in a game and piracy is tolerated here but being scummy to each other isn't.

I hope a lot of people do stay because once they get past the whole losing stinks thing it's all downhill from there

  • They will come with admiration looking at the beautiful and colorful world of the game.

I swear that there is just a checklist floating about in PvE circles on how to make posts. Its comical on how every single post sounds identical. Describe how beautiful the game is, talk about how PvP is full of big ole meanies, and leave it off with a question like "Won't you think about the children?"

All these posts tend to exclude it attracting people who know what they are getting into. This game has no secret agenda, stealing is in the nature of the game, they don't hide that fact. This may come as a surprise, but many people who play games don't get so extremely slighted when they don't win. Many people are well adjusted enough to accept that they can't win all the time.

Alot of them will see all the ship battles and stealing and will come to this realization. Its fun and they will want to join in.

  • The Pirates of the Caribbean expansion will draw more people into an xbox game pass. I hate to be cynical, but I think that there are other metrics to determine the success of this game other than the number of players that stay.

As much as I think the new stories will be fun for many players, and not discarding the amount of hard work that has gone into the June 22nd release, there are a number of game issues that appear to be glossed over, including the ones that the OP mentioned above.

Except for on the forums I guess, where they're adamant about changing any difference of opinion other people have? 🥁🤣

  • First week. 10 complaints about things we see every month. From being killed to having loot stolen.

Second week: unable to complete tall tales due to player interactions. With the “we need pve” server complaints.

Third and on: same as above with added, “game could be better if” or “I’m done with this game”

All the new players will come for the captain sparrow. But won’t be able to meet him due to reasons and this leave. While all the current players will still be around enjoying everything because we know how.

  • I wish Rare would censor stuff like "noob/s" its just the uncreative insult of the losers.

They will experience the Sea of Thugs yeah.
Can't be helped. It is also due to the bullys and tyrants that the meetings with the actual friendly Crews become that much more wholesome.

  • @vareg1986 Well first off plenty in that age group are potty mouths so not really sure what your point is on that.

As for my advice for new players it would be what I tell any new player who joins into any open shared world game whethers its PvE, PvP or both and that is do not expect to be an expert the first day. Actually , do not expect to be an expert the first month either.

Plan on meeting players who will destroy you, try to learn from it. If a player seriously wrecks you after the wrecking dont get mad and instead send them a message and ask for advice. I been in situations on both sides. Been wrecked in a PvP match up I sent message asking for help and have wrecked people who have sent me messages asking for advice. I always found for me jumping in with expierenced players helped me learn the quickest. You will be surprised how many veterns players want to help newbies.

As far as how many will be left? Well people come and go from games. Its nothing new, it happens. Im guessing for Disney to even consider partnering up with SOT the game is not doing nearly as bad as some of the doomday naysayers would lead us to believe.

  • @combatxkitty said in How many newplay will be left after the new update is released?:

You will be surprised how many veterns players want to help newbies.

Organic mentoring and pleasant interactions are far more common with veteran adventure players. The majority of the tales but the minority of the coverage.

There are far more of us interested in giving our supplies to others when we are done and leaving ships alone after we assess that there is no real reason to sink them due to lack of value or just because they seem nice or so new that it's of no interest to mess with them

There are so many short and pleasant interactions out there. Far more than terrible ones. All the negative stuff gets brought up because people get emotional about it and want to vent but the reason this game continues to be successful is that the truth about sea of thieves is that most people out there do just fine. They have fun they make new friends and they have many little moments of friendly encounters that never turn into anything more but they are just as valuable as something long term.

And there are those not far up the food chain that go out of their way to be awesome to others. So many times people that are obviously either new or very casual have just brought me something whether treasure or supplies and these are the people that make this game great. They could spend the time trying to improve their own progress and wealth or being bitter about being low on the food chain and not reach out to anyone but they still reach out to others in positive ways and do positive things. All these players are the MVP's of the seas.

The sails will be blown by the wind

This myth is more unbelievable than The Shrouded ghost

  • I remember being a new player, solo on a sloop. I engaged a 4 man Galleon, they must of been new too because we proceeded to have the most memorable and epic ship battle I've had in the game (an experienced crew would of sunk me in seconds)

We fought for 40minutes, through a massive storm, exchanging volley after volley of cannonball fire, until I eventually sunk and swam to a nearby island where they promptly murdered me with cannon fire.

One of my first adventures of thousands, and one of my most memorable.

PvP isn't always a bad experience like people here love to make it out to be.

  • I'm around 200 days played. I honestly can say i only run into toxic people on extremely rare occasions .

Now with that said yes new players will be sunk by old players.

Was I sunk day 1 sure.

Was I sink the other day sure.

Will it make a difference to a new player idk. Depends on the person.
    Just like any other game.

because this is a game at the end of the day

Tbh I'm more curious how a new player will feel with Jack sparrow as a tour guide introduction to the seas.

I think people will have more fun then ever after a few tall tales and a grog. Then go out like the old days cannons spamming not knowing what your hitting yelling " it's Davey Jones for you" playing music while ship sinks.

But we shall see I guess. Regardless I truly look forward to what's coming.

  • Personally i dont think the slaughter of new players is a real problem. I really dont think the PvP is a problem in this game, its just that a small (very loud) minority instantly goes to the forum to yell when they get sunk. Most of us just get sunk and perhaps quit for the night... the next day we happily set sail again.

Personally, me and my crew sometimes go vanilla just to get someone to attack or hunt for us... but mostly we are left alone.

Also i think most of the veteran (old experienced pirates) leave new pirates alone, many will even try to help out if the new crew is nice and friendly.
Funny side story: We tried to donate all our supplies when we were going to end our session, to a clearly new(ish) crew. We tried to slowly approach them (keep the distance, and the usual stuff), we also tried diplomacy. First from a distance and the by sending over one of our crew as a diplomat. We got greeted with cannonballs, cutlas and bullets. Soooo, naturally we had to hunt them down, cut their masts (they were on a big), anchor and board them, and keep them calm (killing and/or avoid them) while we transferred our supply crates and the odd chest over to their boat. At this point they calmed down, and actually started to communicate back... so we repaired their masts, and hull... and set our own ship on fire (its our tradition when we quit) and wished our fellow pirates luck on the seas.

So what can we learn from this? We all need to new players a good experience on the seas, and both new and old players can be just as "nice" or "evil".

Just my couple of cents on the matter,
    Ghostfire

  • I think most people will leave within a week.

There is no player progression other than cosmetics and that usually makes
    people move on.

Shame when we've got an otherwise solid game going here.

  • Well to all those who say there is no progression and everyone will get bored and leave:

There are lots of games with basically no progression and no real end. Most building games have no end or real progress. Cities Skylines (the dominating city building game at the moment), The Sims games and so on. There is no progress, you just unlock stuff by doing stuff. In city builders, population unlocks new buildings, in the Sims money let you buy more furniture, clothes and so on.

So im pretty sure SoT will be just fine in the future. The game has lots of fans and players who like and understand the idea of the "cosmetic progression".

  • @ghostfire1981 Now, I havent played it since Season 2 of I guess... Chapter 1? But if I remember correctly, Fortnite doesnt even have progression, just cosmetics. And that game's all the rage of the kiddos

  • To all those saying "no progression besides cosmetics, game has no ending, game will die"

    cough cough

    • CS:GO, over 600-700k regular players DAILY. No progression beyond cosmetics, no storyline, no ending.

    • Minecraft, one of the largest online games for years now, no real progression, no ending, super short story.

Both of these are also huge in terms of streaming viewership and Youtube. Need I go on?

    Try again plz.

  • @vareg1986 I have to say, as an OG player returning after a year's hiatus (forgive me Rare and RNGods of the sea!) I have yet to face NAY toxicity at all. In three sessions; totalling around 15 hours of play we have had one PVP encounter.
I would hope that with the options available to us now for platform and input choice, not to mention all the other things available to do in this game (including Arena) it really is less of an issue now - there is too much to do for folk to always want PVP and to be toxic.

I could be wrong though; let's wait and see what the update brings next week matey.

    Fair winds for now,

Yup, another good example... havent played fortnite myself (feel too old (40) for it), but yeah its really popular.

As i see it, SoT has a long and nice future, and to be honest, SoT is not a game for everyone. BUT it is a unique game nowadays, and im really happy that Rare goes their own way doing their own thing.

  • Really looking forward to the update. More tall tales. More lore, all exciting stuff. I tend to play more PvE, but I don’t mind the battles of PvP and I love the excitement thinking that I might be wrecked. Adds a unique gameplay that I haven’t seen anywhere else.

  • Although I wish you could you take ALL the gold at the end of the Shores of Gold tale.. soooo much loot 😂😂

Although I wish you could you take ALL the gold at the end of the Shores of Gold tale.. soooo much loot 😂😂

No you would not, its cursed. :)

  • Its a really nice game.
But its NOT cute, its not "beautiful"!
Its harsh, its hard, its brutal, its toxic, its depressing.

    Yes you read right.
If new players inform before playing, they would know that the game is like this (i exaggerated, ... a little bit).

At the other side, YES its a beautiful game, but be aware of the dark side!

If you know that your life and loot in this game is not gifted youre fine and dont end as a "PvP is toxic" / "PvE Servers!!!" Whiner.

    ;-)

  • @ghostfire1981 I’ll take my chances 😈😊

  • The mods are ready to lock the newest posts that are going to be over exaggerating about griefers and some sore new players screaming about PvE only servers right?
