Trident of Dark Tides gets me killed in PvP

  • I have had mixed results with this weapon - having annihilated entire crews with it or being cut down within seconds. It's the latter aspect that I would like to address. When an enemy gets too close while you're holding the weapon you really only have 2 options, since your movement is slowed and you are incapable of blocking: 1) Fire off another shot in the hopes that it will kill them or 2) you can drop the weapon and then switch to another.

So, I ask, why do you have to drop the weapon and then switch to another? Why not just have both actions occur with the press of a single input? Where it both drops the weapon AND immediately switches to another weapon? For example, instead of pressing B to drop it on Xbox and then Y to switch weapons, why not just press Y to do both in 1 smooth, fluid motion? It would be more streamlined that way!

You could even use your hotkeyed items to switch to them faster in a similar fashion (for example, I have bombs hotkeyed to up on the Dpad, so instead of B and up, I could just press up to drop the trident and immediately switch to the bombs).

  • @galactic-geek I notice when you press LT you aim the trident, but when you press RT, it aims AND fires the trident.

Maybe LT can be switched to a blocking mechanism with the staff, making it a bit more viable...

  • I think that, when holding a trident in water, a ghostly mermaid tail should form around your legs, like how the Crab Shield forms around their body

When the tail is formed on you, you can hold LT to dash any direction in the water, like how the sword can dodge hop.

This would make the trident an exceptional underwater weapon, but lacking on land, as it should, it IS a merfolk weapon.

  • Lovely, easy (I imagine) change to implement. I like it.

I have noticed this too, but aiming without firing actually does serve a purpose. The weapon fires so straight that you have to aim with the point of the staff, which can be difficult to do if you can't see it due to the bubble charging on its tip.

Also, if we were able to block with it, that then brings in the question - could we dodge with it too?

  • Really seems to be a weapon that's aimed to be used in PvE. Care to describe how you are annihilating other crews with it?

Mostly by surprise, distraction, good timing, cover, etc.

  • @galactic-geek have you considered that you do more "annihilating" without using the trident for PvP?

I don't think it needs anything changed because it is inherently bad for PvP by design, and any small improvements you make to it won't do anything to change that.

I'm experienced enough to know this. I was really just experimenting (as I so often do) just to see if I could do it. At a full charge, the ToDT does 90% damage - if a pirate can nail that up close, it's going to hurt, and it's got knockback and splash too! That's not weak.

  • @galactic-geek
I feel like it should include the parry mechanics of the sword but also include the ability to skewer the enemy; after all it is a trident!

This is a situation where I feel Rare really missed the boat; pun totally intended.

I think on this note, SwimPlatypus7 might be on to something in regards to the issue you addressed above. "Why can't I just drop it and swap to another weapon" could be addressed by making the LT a forward trident-like stab, rather than an "aim-down-sights". So it could cancel the charge, and stab forwards.

Could you block with it? No, but being able to jab someone real quick is better than exploding yourself or flinging the thing aside to try and panic with controls to defend yourself. For that matter, if you managed to hit someone with the high 90% damage, and they happen to make the poor decision to rush you, you could just jab them and get a free kill out of it.

The balance of this is questionable, considering that does make the trident stronger, technically, (even though it doesn't have a defense to prevent someone from just slashing you with their sword, and even though it's a drop not a weapon you can just acquire anywhere.) but it would solve the problem and make the trident more of a... well, trident.

That somewhat makes it more viable against Sirens who want to claw your face, too.
