Galleon Crew Size 4-5

  • Recommend Galleon Crew Size be changed to 4-5. Possible ship size between Brigantine (crew: 2-3) and Galleon (crew: 4-5)?

  • Actually it goes:

    Sloop 1-2 crew

    Brigantine 2-3 crew

    Galleon 3-4 crew

And if you want to get really technical...
    Sloop 1-2
    Brigantine 1-3
    Galleon 1-4

Because although soloing the larger ships isn't smart in most cases, you can do it. :P

  • Yeah, no.

I see this suggestion pop up around here time and again, and I just don't think it's a good idea.

Four is a magic number to keep things tidy and there's a reason why it's been the keystone of so many party/coop/multiplayer games since the dawn of time. It doesn't even limit itself to videogames. Try going out for drinks with four other friends, then do it again with three. The moment you add that extra person the group fragments into subgroups. In Sea of Thieves in particular, it would almost certainly unbalance the game.

  • The game was balanced early on to be optimal at the current max crew size. You can work effectively with -1 player on your crew but having 2 on a sloop, 3 on a brig, and 4 on a galleon is what everything is designed around.

  • I was actually just looking at the recommended crew sizes yesterday.

    Currently, it's:
    Sloop 1-2
    Brigantine 2-3
    Galleon 4

I always thought it was either:
    Sloop 1-2
    Brigantine 3
    Galleon 4

    Or:
    Sloop 1-2
    Brigantine 2-3
    Galleon 3-4

    Shows what we know. 😅🙄

Everyone also seems to forget that, even for its small size, a rowboat can hold a galleon-sized crew (up to 4) or more (up to 5), if it has a harpoon to interact with. This means that a rowboat can have the largest compliment of pirates (I hesitate to say crew) of any ship upon the Sea. Gotta love the irony that the smallest vessel can have the most.

Then again, with that logic, I suppose you could place a pirate next to every interactive object on a ship to really blow things out of proportion. 🤣

  • As I see it the functionality of the craft dictates the crew, and that depends on the number of the sails to operate.

Sure you can solo any ship yet the functional crew is the one that can operate the sails and reach the objective in less time possible.

  • If you want to get fancy.

Two galleons form and become one.
    4+4=8

Have you ever seen a galleon run with all positions covered? Two to perform sails tasks, 4 to run cannons (since 8 would be silly as you can only really broadside from one side of the ship in most battles) 1 at the helm and 1-2 to run bilge? It's insane! And then if you did have enough crew to run all 8 cannons at once and 2 people per mast? Nigh on unsinkable. And I'm sure it'd be both hilarious and probably a little frustraing to be on it. :P

  • I admit that I would love to have a galleon with 5 pirates or even a bigger ship, but let's face it, a galleon with one more player would be absurdly OP and as much as I would like the advantage, I don't think it's fair to those who play on other ships, especially solo sloopers.

Four is the magic number for multiplayer interaction, and anything higher than 4 would change the balance of power on the seas. Also, each ship was made specifically for that crew size. If there were regularly 5 people on a galleon, then they'd have to change how things work to balance it. So, anything above 4 crewmembers would realistically have to be another ship. Rare won't be doing that, as they've talked about how 4 is the magic number and how each ship was specifically designed and balanced.

I think there is merit in having more crew sizes, but only if they were implemented in different modes of play. A mode where solo players fight to keep their raft afloat? A large crew of pirates on a huge ship to fight the Old Mother? Such ideas sound pretty cool to me, but you have to ask if they would be taking something away from Adventure. I'd be down for something like that, but if Rare doesn't want to take away from Adventure to build something like that, then that's their decision. In the end, the game is all about the Adventure experience. I loved Arena, but I think that situation has killed the chances of separate modes in the future.
