Mike Chapman Wanted To Kill Off Shelley The Crab!?

  • Just one of the many little interesting things that came up in a recent chat Joe Neate had with Windows Central's Xbox Chaturday podcast. It's a long podcast but well worth a watch/listen. There are chapter markers if you just want to skip to Sea of Thieves specific topics, as the chat does cover other games and Joe's own path in the industry to where he is now.

(Also available in audio-only form on Spotify, search for "Xbox Chaturdays")

Just some other things that came up:

    • No plans as of yet to switch to Unreal Engine 5
    • Cut features: death tax and friendly fire
    • How A Pirate's Life came to be, Rare's meetings with Disney
    • Monetisation and how to do it right
    • They plan to support the game and have ideas for many years ahead
    • Thoughts around crossovers (yes, One Piece is mentioned to Joe but not planned)
    • Frozen/snow/viking area not planned

There are a lot more things I am sure I am forgetting.

  • @realstyli
I saw that the other day and was pretty surprised!

  • And given community sentiment, they couldn't actually go through with it! XD

  • The origin stories of developers is always interesting to me even though I'm not part of that world at all

I really enjoy hearing people talk about it that were around in the 80s and all their old stories

  • I don’t get why ppl want a frozen/ice area, doesn’t go with the theme of pirates at all.

There's a lot of reading material at Raph Koster's, lead designer of Ultima Online / director at Star Wars Galaxies & Everquest 2, website (https://www.raphkoster.com/). Particularly interesting in relation to Sea of Thieves would be the "Laws of Online World Design"

    cool I'll check that out

one of the great things about the internet is going on deep dives on things I have little knowledge in or ties to but I get hooked on reading/hearing about.

I have done a deep dive on the old Sierra games and watched all sorts of old dev stories from the time for no real reason at all I just get hooked on random things lol. The internet is really awesome when it comes to that sort of thing.

That's just how the hype train works. One person has an idea (usually sparked by something already there) and then people just jump on to it like there's no tomorrow. In this case, the spark was the introduction of the Devil's Roar. Then someone went the easy route and started saying something along the lines of "since we have this, we should have its polar opposite as well". (Essentially.) And from there it has just gotten all over the place and it keeps looping every so often now.

In the law Storytelling vs Simulation:

You can try a sim-style game which doesn’t supply stories but instead supplies freedom to make them. This is a lot harder and arguably has never been done successfully.

    Found one!

  • @ziggie-dory Ah

    1. Because pirates didnt only hanged around sunny beaches, they were in frozen places, middle east Africa you name it.

    2. Because many of us have full faith in Rare to deliver the most beautiful visuals and experience.

    3. Again, snow is beautiful and with SoT's sounds team and the breathtaking oil paint graphics I think we can get something very unique, its not Devil's Roar but with snow, it will be something that can really work.

    4. Because its a video game, those who whines about realism clearly confused with what game they are playing, Sea of Thieves is not realistic at all and its a video game. Dont see Legend of Zelda get that complaint with one map contains frozen mountains scorched lava areas and deserts, people get to experience different areas and thats fun, we dont need more of the same.

    5. Because portals are the perfect opportunity to expand the map without making the world feels empty or deal with technical issues, you go through the portal into a different server of a different map like Frozen Tundras or swamps, you name it.

    6. Because we dont like basement dwellers to tell us what to like or dislike, im sick and tired of gatekeeping.

  • @faceyourdemon I was simply stating my opinion, you don’t have to resort to insults mate, I am not “gatekeeping”

I also didn’t mention realism, I believe it (an ice region) doesn’t fit thematically. Very different.

I dont care either way, I was never convinced an ice region was every actually going to materialize.

But.. I mean.. it literally could fit though.

We have a sea of the damned. If that ever got expanded there could absolutely be an ice region..

Easy tie in could be an ice region representing the coldness of death with ice and snow imagery, a region within the sea of the damned loosely based on norse Hel, since when most people talk about ice region it generally goes hand in hand with norse/viking requests. Which could be a biome both sweltering hot, and blistering cold. Would make for a pretty visually unique and divided biome if you had fun with the creative options there.

Thematically.. literally anything can fit in this game.. it's pure mystical pirate fantasy. I swear too many people think this game should just be or stay an extension of PotC themes and imagery, and anything else just can't fit.

  • @bukubru
I should have stated that it wasnt directed to you im sorry , youve asked politely about why do people want it, it was aimed to the condescending community members who thinks they can dictate our taste.

  • @ziggie-dory

(an ice region) doesn’t fit thematically.

I thought it worked pretty well in Assassin's Creed Rogue.

@WolfManbush You might also enjoy the documentaries made by Noclip if you haven't checked them out already.

One of the strangest contentious things to me about SOT is how fired up people get about the ice region lol

It could easily get worked in. If it's got the popularity for the content to get used then it would work out fine

People that steal don't care where they steal from
People that pve enjoy pretty things that are different
People that play casually just like to hang out

It's not like an ice region is gonna hurt any of that.

I'm pretty indifferent on it personally but I don't see it as some thing to fight against.

The type of players that this game has largely been trying to attract the last year or so are largely not gonna have any issue playing in an ice area. They will see it like the underwater stuff. Something pretty to play around in.
