Some suggestions for changes to the IPG

  • I know the IPG has been talked to death. A lot of people think it's annoying, a lot of people love it, I'm somewhere in the middle. I like the fact that it generates, more or less, a completely unique pirate. However... I'm not a fan of how there is no choice whatsoever.
I feel like a happy medium between a full character creator and the infinite pirate generator would be the ability to set a couple of parameters. Specifically, choosing the body type of the pirate you want. There are 3 body types (I believe), skinny, buff, and fat. I think letting you choose which of these 3 body types you want your pirate to be will at least eliminate some of the randomness to it. For example, because otherwise many of the results are completely useless. For example, if somebody is looking for a skinny pirate so they can tuck more effectively, about 80% of the pirates they get generated will be automatically useless to them. I think including at the very least a body type choice, and perhaps an age choice, will eliminate some of the problems that people have with the system, without completely removing it.

  • I believe that we don't have the option to change so many things in our characters precisely because that would go against the idea that each character is unique, because the machine can know what has already been created or not.

Why then are most new cosmetics being released in the form of costumes which makes everyone look not similar but completely identical?

The "idea that each character is unique" is no longer a valid argument and clearly not part of Rare's vision anymore.

A true Tucker doesn't care what body size (body shaming much?) or outfit colors.
they can tuck anywhere and not be discovered.

The character remains unique, if you decide to wear the same outfit as another character is your decision, not Rare's.

This is silly. First of all, costume cosmetics are simply easier to make than individual cosmetics, as Rare has more freedom to make drastic changes to your pirate's model (Dark Warsmith, Davey Jones, the frozen battlepass one e.t.c. Having them as individual cosmetics makes for a nightmare of clipping.

Secondly, the costumes make you look identical because that's the purpose of a costume! You buy the Jack Sparrow costume to look like Jack Sparrow, not so you can look "unique"

Thirdly, your pirate's model still changes how the costume looks to a degree, so it's never quite the same. A fat pirate wearing the lodestar costume looks fairly different from a skinny pirate wearing said costume.

The "idea that each character is unique" is no longer a valid argument and clearly not part of Rare's vision anymore.

It very much is valid. Everything is unique to a extent. It's impossible to make everything in a game perfectly unique unless you allow for custom content in every aspect of the game.

Obviously choosing details about your pirate is clearly not a part of Rare's vision, as they would've changed the pirate creation system a long time ago.

  • Alright, it has been discussed for years. There are pros and cons, but I really think it should be addressed.

    • I know Rare wanted everyone to be different, but I don’t think it really work since people need to spend hours looking at pirates they don’t want.

    • A simple filter like gender, size and age could be a great solution.

    • Can you explain me that when I’m looking for a young male pirate, I always get old, female or blind pirate???

Right now I decided to do a re-roll of my character, because mine always seems angry and I wanted something more neutral… but can’t find a good pirate for me.

    Thank you

  • @frailskydiver12 There are far more than 3 body types. The official SoT concept art image below from Artstation is just a sample:

Because they sell. They are stupid and awful and ruin everything, but people still open their wallets and hand the money over. Stop buying Plunder Passes and emporium costumes and they'll go away. If we keep encouraging them, soon they'll be adding Iron Man or something.

The "idea that each character is unique" is no longer a valid argument and clearly not part of Rare's vision anymore.

Correction: it was NEVER a part of the vision of the people in charge. Rare is just a front for selling the game. Rare are good people and are forgiven for all the mistakes they have made. The real enemy are the shareholders and people who are further up the food chain, they boss people around and have trash like costumes and battle passes stuffed in.

In conclusion, STOP BUYING PLUNDER PASS AND EMPORIUM COSTUMES AND THEY WILL STOP MAKING THEM.

  • I would like something simple like eye colour to be changed.
