Suggestion; A Weapon Upgrade Concept

  • Before I share my new suggestion for this game, I would like to start by saying sea of thieves is an amazing game. The PvPvE mechanic of this game works really well; The excitement of exploring everything in this game along with the fear of other player pirates. Every time I set sail I have a new experience.

Although this is an amazing game, I feel like one thing is missing… Some type of progression where I feel like my pirate is getting stronger through better equipment. The issue with this, however, is the unfairness that would occur in PvP. So what I have concluded is a weapon upgrade system that effects PvE but NOT PvP.

    • Core concept
Every weapon in the game (sword, flintlock, blunderbuss, EoR) will be able to upgrade from Tier 1 to Tier 5. The cosmetic of the weapon does not matter (ex. When a player upgrades their sword from tier 1 to tier 2, all their swords will be tier 2). When a player dies they lose all tier upgrades.

    • How this weapon upgrade system works?
A player will be able to upgrade there weapon by finding a “weapon recipe paper” in a barrel (just like you can find maps in barrels). Players will then be able to bring these papers to the weapon shop and ask the weapon vendor to upgrade weapon. There is a progression when upgrading a weapon (Ex. to upgrade to tier 4 your weapon must be tier 3).

    • What will be added to the game.
20 paper tier upgrades( Upgrades 1 through 5 for each weapon)

    • How would this effect gameplay
Reminder that this will only effect PvE.
Lets say it takes three hits to kill a skeleton with a sword in normal sea of thieves. Well, with this new upgrade system, it could look like this; five hits with a tier 1 sword, four hits with a tier 2 sword, Three hits with a tier 3 sword, 2 hits with a tier 4 sword, and 1 hit with a tier 5 sword.
This will now make PvE harder, unless a player is willing to progress their weapons in which it will make PvE easier. Keep in mind there is the risk of now losing your tiers when you die

    • How is this balanced compared to the game now?
Lets say it takes 30 minutes to clear a skeleton fort now. But with the new upgrade system it could take about 10 minutes but it took a player 20 minutes to find all the upgrades.

    • What will this add to the game.
      A feeling of get stronger.
More reasons to explore to find tier upgrades.
Makes players use different weapons( Ex. Instead of constantly using the blunderbuss and EoR, maybe a player will use the sword and flintlock because they have better tier upgrades for those two weapons).

Let me know what you all think! Hopefully this got the ball rolling for some of you an you can build off this.

  • Against.

We already have progression that shows how long a player has played. Strength for finding items shouldn’t be a thing for this type.

For what you want is to decrease the time it takes to complete world events. If they add this, they have to increase the difficulty of such events to balance out the OP weapons pirate use.
Why? Nobody likes completing everything quickly, leaves nothing left to explore if your mowing down skeletons. Or killing bosses.

But that just my two cents.

  • @burnbacon, I appreciate the response! Couple points; 1. A player can already “mow down skeletons and bosses” via kegs and cannon balls, this new idea just gives another variant that I believe is more enjoyable. 2. I did mention above that they should increase the difficulty so that this will be balanced.

  • I have always been against the scaling of enemies (which Rare clearly does with voyages). To scale weapons at the same time just seems like too much scaling of, well, everything.

Personally, I like fighting the weaker enemies - basic island skeletons, sea fort phantoms, chickens, etc. It makes me feel powerful. That said, if PvE were to be made that meak across the board, by their health, our weapons, or otherwise, then there would have to be a lot more enemies to compensate - and we have already seen how the community reacts to that (1st with sniper skellies, then again with barrel skellies, and last again with the OCs).

  • No.
But if you can upgrade say the scope for a zoom in, then it is a great idea. I mean, like the sailor eye of reach, you can get a rum bottle and use it as a scope for a zoom in like a real sniper, a torn glass piece like a red dot sight for the flintlocks, and for the sword, maybe the sharpness can be adjusted.
    If say other attachments,
You can just get a sniper bipod, rum bottle scope zoom in, a stock for more accuracy, and a firecracker laser sight for the eye of reach.
You can just get a long barrel, a torn glass red dot sight, a small bottle zoom in scope, a firecracker laser sight, and a grip to adjust the accuracy for the flintlock.
You can just get the sword to be sharpened for just a look and maybe a grip.
You can just get a stock, quickdraw grip for the bb.
Maybe we can get a scope where it does not shine and reveal your position.

I'm sorry, but I just couldn't help but think "What is this, CoD?" the whole time I was reading that lol. Though I will have to say I'm against the idea of actual progression that isn't cosmetic, considering that's one of the main points of the game.

  • @rdrjj
Type of cod, but in pirates

  • There really isn't a point to do this other than adding more busy work. Random skeletons are usually killed pretty quickly and the harder voyage ones can be dealt with using fire, cannons, kegs, ashen skulls, disney sticks, etc..
