Opened first vault and died before looting and solving puzzle. Can I do the same vault voyage again?

  • I thought I just had to open the vault and loot everything before the door closed, I didn't know that I had to solve a puzzle before the vault floods and there's no prompt or any explanation about what's going to happen once I use the key and open the vault. I don't want complete spoon-feeding by the game but wouldn't it be better to have some information about what's going to happen once the door opens because you spend about 45 mins to 1 hour finding the map parchments on different islands and then travel to the vault location, I even had to google the key name to find the vault location, after spending so much time I died without getting anything and after I died I get no prompt that I lost all the loot and whether I can start the same voyage again to get the loot. It takes too much time to find all the map pieces, traveling between the islands, etc. Would have appreciated some sort of prompt/explanation. Can I do the same vault voyage again or did I lose all the loot?

  • I felt the same way the first time I did one, they just kind of throw you into it and expect you'll figure out the puzzle thing. It feels bad when the door closes on you because you don't figure it out in time and it feels worse when you realize you can't try it another time without going through the entire voyage again. I think it's fine the way it is though tbh. I don't like games that do a lot of handholding personally. I totally get the frustrations, but it's one of those elements that makes SoT unique.

  • @memento4913 once a vault is closed, its sealed.

The reason for the gold hoarder vault voyages to have a reputation requirement before you can buy them is so you have at least a little knowledge of the game.

One thing to learn when playing sea of thieves, there is always more loot available to acquire.

You cannot do the exact same vault voyage again, since the voyages are rng based.

It is rng which islands you have to visit to get the map parts, it is rng which vault you can open, and it is rng which vault layout you will get and in extension of the last one the puzzle is also rng.

However, since there is always more voyages and more loot, previous experiences add to knowledge for the future.

Before too long you will be emptying vaults like a champ, and dont even need all the emblems to solve the puzzle.

You dont even need to get all the map parts to dig up the key, as soon as you see the X and recognise the island your good to go.

  • I didn't know that I had to solve a puzzle before the vault floods and there's no prompt or any explanation about what's going to happen once I use the key and open the vault.

you dont have too if you dont want the single item hidden behind the wall. This what we call a "Secret" and if you had done some of the TT you would of know about the lighting the Torches and the Puzzle. (Im guessing no?)

but wouldn't it be better to have some information about what's going to happen once the door opens

Tall Tales, and again...its one of those "secret" things. If you know you know. And Now you know, so you do it again.

    I died without getting anything

didnt you just say you looted the vault?

It takes too much time to find all the map pieces

If your Lucky, you will only need One. and a good idea of Island layout.

Would have appreciated some sort of prompt/explanation.

    Sigh...read above.

  • And yet, the captaincy update explains in great length, how to customize your ship.
Tutorials in Sea of Thieves are weird...

  • The puzzle is functionally just a bonus, but as a side note, you dont need to google the key name, if you inspect the key it tells you which island to go to.

  • @callmebackdraft Oh ok, guess I was in a hurry and upgraded the voyage ranks with the gold hoarder because I wanted to get enough gold to buy a ship for the Captaincy. I needed to play the game more and explore stuff before doing the higher-ranked voyages. Thanks for the help. Are all the puzzles in the vaults the same or do they differ? In this vault, the vault door closed and the vault got flooded with water.

Well, I only played one TT.

Tall Tales, and again...its one of those "secret" things. If you know you know. And Now you know, so you do it again.

    Yep, I had to learn.

didnt you just say you looted the vault?

No, I tried to loot it but the vault got flooded and I died.

If your Lucky, you will only need One. and a good idea of Island layout.

    Ok got it.

Chillout, you don't need to be rude about it.

  • you dont need to google the key name, if you inspect the key it tells you which island to go to.

I didn't know I had to drop the key to read the description, it didn't show anything when I was holding the key in my hand.

  • @memento4913

Functionally the puzzles are all the same, 4 pillars that have to be turned in the correct position and 3 medallions that can be placed in the table for hints and a button that needs to be pressed to check the solution.

One quick bit of advice, when unloading the vault place the loot you want just outside of the vault door (the one that closes on a timer)

This costs the least amount of time, you only have 3 minutes in the vault to do your thing so prioritise what loot you want and what to leave behind.

Especially solo the timer is quite tight

  • @memento4913 that loot is gone you got about 3mins to get the loot out of there there’s three tokens that show you the answer to the pillar puzzle you really only need one it will show the first symbol go to the last pillar and find that you’ll be down to a 50/50 for the 2 middle pillars for a better explanation look up some YouTube videos they’ll help a lot

Once the vault floods, the loot inside is gone forever. I'm sorry about that. If you want to try again, it will become easier with practice. For future reference:

    • The Crescent shaped key goes on Crescent Isle inside the northern cave entrance.

    • The Snake shaped key goes on Mermaid's Hideaway toward the back of the island underneath the large arch.

    • The Scarab shaped key goes on Crook's Hollow within the cave system just past the waterfall.

    • The Boar shaped key belongs to Devil's Ridge on the rear of the island. The vault entrance is kind of flush with the beach's surface. It can be a little hard to spot the first time around, but in my opinion, this is one on the best vaults to stock up on loot.

    • The Shark shaped key goes on Kraken's Fall. If you're rowing into the bay, the vault will be on your left. I would recommend a rowboat for this one. It can be tedious to get the loot out.

I'm not sure if you're a Solo-Slooper or not. If you are, I would recommend avoiding the vaults in Devil's Roar. It takes only one volcanic eruption to ruin your voyage. Over time these will get easier. The vault entrances have cave paintings depicting the figures on the keys. (For example: Crescent Isle's vault has half-moons painted beside the vault door)

The puzzles can be tricky, but you have to find three medallions within the vault and insert them into the alter in the middle of the room. The top of the alter will display images and you'll have to match the images on the alter to those on the columns toward the back of the vault. I've found that you can save time if you find two of the three medallions and use process of elimination for the third.

One last point, if you're going for the Seeker of Ancient Vaults commendation, do one, maybe two voyage per day. It'll take you about two and a half months to complete, but in the long run, it will help mitigate burnout.

    Good luck and happy sailing!

  • Big question here - are you running solo or with a buddy? Soloing vaults can be pretty full on even for a seasoned SoT player as you're on a fairly tight time limit with a lot to do.

That being said, it was your first attempt no? Cant expect perfection the first time through and at least you've learned the important lesson - get those chests OUT of the vault ASAP

  • I have an offer for you if you get to a point where you feel it will benefit you

I'll run through a quest and get a key and go to the vault and I'll invite you in to show you how I clear the vault, so that it may help you.

All you gotta do is set up a time with me, give me some time, and commit to showing up when it's time.

The treasure will be yours as well.

also you can invite me for any of your vaults if you have an open spot and I'll help clear the vault, if I can get on, I will. Just give me a heads up first.

I was running solo and ya its pretty hard to do it solo. I had to learn the lesson 2 times but 3rd time lucky I guess, I finally managed to loot a vault and complete the voyage.

Yep you definitely need practice because of the time limit on the vault remaining open. Thank you so much for the help, the video helped me a lot. I finally managed to loot a vault today.

  • Thanks a lot, everyone for the help, I finally managed to loot a vault today after opening a vault, wasting too much time, and drowning in the vault again. On my 3rd attempt since yesterday, I got the Devil's Ridge vault key and managed to loot chests worth about 13k to 15k in total. I used a 3-minute timer on my phone to keep track of how much time I have left before the door closes and I got out with 15 seconds left, I could have got an extra chest but I decided not to be too greedy and just got out :P

Its definitely not worth rushing to buy a ship, just enjoy the game, get some cosmetics you enjoy, and when the time comes, you can get your self a ship. It isnt worth buying a ship the moment you can afford it just because all benefits and extra cosmetics that come from it require a good bit of money, so until you can make back money quickly, its not entirely worth it.

Vaults change up a bit, but they all work the same, just find the key stones to solve it, and if you got all chests out, have someone bruit force the puzzle while the other looks for the last stone.

It's not surprising that you did great but that doesn't make it any less awesome.

This is just one of the many obstacles you will get yourself over and you'll get over all of them, no doubt about that.

  • This is part of the process I’m afraid. This game is best played with at least one player more knowledgeable than you, and one less knowledgeable than you. One to show you the way, and one to strive to stay better than.

Anyways, find someone that has logged some hours in the game to show you the ropes, it helps a lot
