I just came back to this game after a few months off and see the new Captain feature. It seems you must buy your own ship starting at $250,000 gold. I started grinding but wouldn’t mind paying for a shortcut. I don’t see a way to buy gold unless I’m just missing it. Anybody know of a way to buy gold with real money or am I stuck grinding it out?
Can you buy Gold with real money?
Not unless you buy the season packs that come out every so often, and I believe the included gold amount is pretty minor (I want to say 25K but I can't be sure). You're buying it more for the pet/costume and the Ancient Coin that comes with it rather than for the gold.
Gold is pretty easy to come by these days though, so it won't take long to get to 250K.
@burnbacon I imagine they may be a busy adult without much time to invest in gaming. I've been playing for a month and have barely broken $100k - but I also only have a few hours a week to play and it seems like every crew I join ditches halfway through a quest or just wanders aimlessly (I have to play solo as I haven't found any regular casual group to sail with). I'd also gladly put up some real money for in-game gold based on my situation.
Exactly. Busy dad just trying to get my 9 year-old son’s account to Captain. He just likes to fool around and not necessarily grind for gold. But he wants to buy the ship so he can customize it. So right now I’m stuck grinding it out for him at night LOL. I’m getting like 10k gold per night in about an hour or so.

As others said there’s no way to buy gold for real money.
Keep in mind though that getting him a ship as captain only offers you with the option to name a ship and get milestone progression. All customizations require either another large sum of gold or a grind of milestones. Without being captain you can still customize most of the looks of the ship.
If you really want to throw money towards the customization you could always buy ship liveries. The season pass will also offer you some extra rewards for progressing renown.
I'd just let him have his fun and while doing that he'll slowly save up for whatever he wants. In my honest opinion things gain more value if you earned them yourself. If he doesn't want to do that you could always introduce him to "The Rolling Stones - You can't always get what you want".
