Phantom Ships

  • Phantom Ship Fleets are very good and I have a fun time fighting them, the only issue I have is when you ram them you take so much damage it pretty much insta-sinks your ship, and when they ram you the same thing happens. If they can do an un-canny amount of damage when they ram you then you should be able to do the same when you ram them. Rather than you sink when you ram them. It's unfair to 1 man sloops trying to do the Order Of The Souls quests. I am a day 1 player and it isn't an issue for me. but a new player who is trying to do these quests can find it especially difficult and unfair. All in all, great game but please think about the newbies who are trying to get into the game :)

  • they are slower and they go in a predictable pattern unlike skelly ships

there isn't much of a reason to be going through them or vice versa other than on a rare occasion where it's not avoidable

  • It's like 3-4 tier 1-2 holes, it's not that bad.

  • The only situation where it’s really an issue is doing the Flameheart events, you ram one and you’re getting shot at by 4 others. At the moment that event doesn’t exist but when it comes back (thank you Mike Chapman) you can easily avoid that by just chilling on the outer edges.

Newbie players won't encounter the ghost ships (unless they are in a crew of higher Order of Souls or Athena pirates).

  • @kingcrusher9241 You want to be able to ram a ghostly phantom ship?

Think about what you just said...

I did that one time and Flamey retorted with Interesting tactic, I still have to hear that from my crew-mate when I do something that doesn't seem to be the best option ...

  • @galactic-geek So if I can't ram them why can they ram me? They are "Ghostly phantom ships" after all. [mod edit] I'm just saying it's uneven on both sides

  • @kingcrusher9241 Please refrain from being rude to others and bypassing the language filter. Thank you.

How come I can slash phantoms to death with steel swords and bullets, hit them with cannonballs, but I can’t BRUTE FORCE them?!? How “physical” these phantoms are seem to change as much as Sticher Jim seems to change sides…

  • @realwebber69 My point exactly. Yet they can brute force ram your ship and put 5-7 holes in it, yet you ram them and you're the one who takes damage... Just doesn't seem very consistant.

Ever hear of cold iron? It's very effective against otherworldly foes. Always has been. Blade or bullet or ball from cannon, it matters not - because it's all cold iron. Ships though? They're made of wood.

This was basically the OG explanation from the Rare devs themselves.

  • @galactic-geek Tell me
What’s keeping that wood together, and what is that thing made of?

  • @galactic-geek Still doesn't explain how a "Phantom" ship can deal damage to a regular ship when ramming if it isn't a physical entity. It's a phantom, not a solid object, so how come when they ram you, your ship takes so much damage even though they go through you.

    Glue. 😉

Because their deathly ichor reaches deep into your soul, and dissolves the glue holding your ship together. 😅

  • @galactic-geek
So you have no logical answer to my question...

  • @kingcrusher9241 spectral discharge causing a disturbance in the molecular integrity of inorganic physical objects that come into contact with it. It all has to do with the quantum singularities that exist in the quarks of all inorganic physical materials making them susceptible to interactions with spectral entities.

Or, you know, because that is the way they designed the game.

  • I mean, the reason they do damage as they pass through you is because they are basically the easiest naval enemy on the seas. 3 strikes from any cannon shot, be it cannonball, chainshot, blunderbomb, or firebomb, will destroy them (unless they are the captain ship). Their sailing pattern is very consistent, as well, which makes them easy to anticipate.

If you could just ram the ships then they would be even easier than they already are. You would just sail in a circle crashing through them which would probably be a one-hit kill and barely even need to use cannons.

It's ok for different enemies to require different strategies to take on.

    This. 👆

  • @galactic-geek also the aliens, but that is a whole other can of grubs - am I right?

  • @galactic-geek Geez, that must be some STRONG glue if it can hold an entire ship together. Does make you wonder…why do the shipwrights have hammers? Are they hammering in the GLUE?!? Just add some water, you’re literally surrounded by the thing!

The hammers are to put the wooden planks back into place, duh! Something's gotta attach it to the glue, after all! A little bit of force is all that is needed. 😏

    Oh, and the glue - it's not water-soluble. 😉

  • @galactic-geek gee, well I guess I gotta get me a PREMIUM COLD IRON FIGUREHEADS and then I can BRUTE FORCE my way through ghost ships. There’s gotta be some sort of figurehead that can pierce ghost ships…right?

You're trying too hard. Give it a rest...

  • @galactic-geek no.
"20 men had tried to sink them, 20 men had made a slip."
"The 21st was the pirate with the big iron on his ship."
    "BIG IRON ON HIS SHIPPPPPPPP..."

    Duke explains it.

Metal can damage memories for some reason.

That is why canonballs, cutlasses and bullets can damage phantoms.

Look guys! Being a lore nerd is not that bad of a thing!

  • @thorumsu wait you’re saying PHANTOMS ARE MEMORIES?!? So that insane theory I made up about phantoms being their brains might be true after all…

  • @realwebber69 yep, Phantoms are living memories from the Sea of the Damned.

  • @redeyesith so…no sea of the damned=no more phantoms!!! I’ve cracked the code! And I'm sure it won’t have ANY negative effects at ALL!

  • @realwebber69 of course, that also means no respawning - hardcore mode for Pirates. You die, bye bye.
