Confusion on Seasonal Cosmetics, would appreciate a Developer response.

  • Ahoy! Soooo, way back before Season One launched, Rare sorta announced their seasonal plan and how the cosmetics would be divvied out. They said that each season would have a Hero Clothing Set, some variety of filler items, like one-off recolors and such, a couple of Legendary rewards, and an assortment of time limited items, these being:

A Flag, Sail, Makeup, Tattoos, Scars, and Titles.

The rest was told to be timed-exclusive, meaning it would return to the normal shops after some time! After some drama with the players who didn’t read the pre-season plan, Rare has decided to hold these previously announced as not time limited items hostage, for who knows how long. Now, here we are with… I believe so far, the Eastern Winds Jade Eye of Reach, and the Legendary Curse being the only two items to have returned, and they are both ~2 years old now and are both from season one.

This update, we see the completion of the Frostbite Set with it’s missing parts funneled into the shop. However, the outfit from Season One is not here. Is this just the norm now? Are things not returning from previous seasons? I personally think we should all suck it up and start dumping each season’s non-time-limited roster in the shops following each season from now on, where we could see the rest of Season One’s cosmetics in January, and see Season Two’s at the launch of Season Nine, Three in Ten, and so on. It just makes no sense to hold these items back for this long.

And what of the Weapons of the Damned this season? The patch notes say that they are Time Limited, which means the set of the damned is now broken up, split between earnable and locked-away? This is a horrible mistake if that’s the plan, as it shows Rare is going to continue the pattern which has broken players hearts since Bone Crusher came out. Players see a set they like, but they missed out on the matching hat however many years ago, and they just have to suck it up. Sets should be fully time limited, or not at all. Splitting them half and half causes confusion and disappointment for newer players.

Personally, I’d appreciate the return of the Black Market, and have it offer previous Seasonal track rewards for doubloons (excluding the time limited ones)

    TL;DR:

Has Rare abandoned their Seasonal Cosmetic Backlog release plan? Have they forgot about it? Is there a plan for it? I think we’d all like to know.

I think a better idea, assuming they aren't using these for random commendation unlocks in a future update, would be to throw a random item or two into the Seapost shops when the shop refreshes. Those stores are terribly understocked now, considering the amount of cosmetics available. I'd be surprised if very many players even use them or know that they cycle through random items and are slightly cheaper than the outpost stores. If they had a chance at a past season cosmetic popping into them, players might stop and look a bit more often.

I still check them to see if there are any unpurchased items on discount, but I haven't been lucky on that in a long time because they only show 3 at a time.

  • I admit I didn't read anything about seasons when they were announced. I just know how bad they are in other games and just assumed they would be awful here too so I left the game for the first few seasons. Then I realized how easy it was and have been kicking myself ever since.

Personally the 105 to get the old legend curse required more work than it would have taken to get it in the season, and you can't wear it with the new curse so I don't know why it was locked at a higher tier than the new curse. That seems silly.

We have an ugly recolor ghost armor and ship set we can farm for with this new pvp mode but they are very unappealing. Meanwhile seasons had the ferryman figure head which looked sick, a glowing ghost hull similar to the reaper glowing hull which was simply a ledger reward and still obtainable. The way they are going about pirate legend cosmetics is very uninspired. We got 3 color variations of the ghost set now.

Then this season gives you a ghost spyglass and weapons, I don't know if we can call that a recolor? If ghostly is a color then I guess because that is all it really is. While its the basic pirate gear it does look better in ghostly form but it's still a weak model. But they match the ghost curse. But they are also FOMO so once this season is over your chance to get weapons that match your ghost curse is also gone. The ghost compass at least looks cool IMO but that was also time limited fomo tied to an adventure. We had like a year or so break from this game being so heavily FOMO driven and now the FOMO is back with a vengeance and it doesn't feel good. And all the people who played all the seasons feel entitled. They EARNED those cosmetics.... Ok well I hit renown 100 in like 3 days so let me grind out more renown to unlock older rewards? They act like these season rewards took skill or something. The amount of FOMO in this game just creates this negative feeling for new comers like there's something really cool the might want. Well maybe you should have bought the game when it was released like everybody else! Or, how dare you take a break from the game, you deserve to miss out on those cosmetics because you betrayed Rare by playing another game!!!

I have been against FOMO from the start, moreso with the events themselves. I was fine with the original set of time limited cosmetics but there is some stuff, especially when it comes to pirate legends which has always been and still is a very lacking pool of cosmetics to choose from. To have some of the best pirate legend stuff locked behind FOMO content meanwhile just drop $40 in the emporium and you can get something way cooler anyway... It's kinda like the skeleton curse. Long tedious grind vs a $10 skeleton costume from the shop that actually looks cool and is wearing a clothing set.

Instead of recolors for the pirate legend ghost set why don't they put out recolors of the season pirate legend stuff so this new PvP mode wont die after a few months. There really isn't much to look forward to past 100 other than a long grind to unlock a golden version of the curse which, while cool, is too long a grind for 99.9% of the players. I've said it before but I think every doubloon item in the game should be adjusted to give gold instead, convert everyones doubloons to gold and either get rid of the useless currency altogether or make it a currency for a new black market shop like you said where we can buy old season cosmetics. Since a lot of the seasonal rewards are giving you gold and doubloons your basically just getting gold then using the doubloons your given to just convert to gold. Seems silly.

  • @magus104 the issue is that 90% of the seasonal cosmetics were advertised to come back after the season was over, but after 2 years of seasons we’ve seen two cosmetics total return. The people you are saying are entitled are fighting to “keep it time limited” when the items they are claiming were never intended to be that way from the start. It’s very sad because we have a chunk of the playerbase using misinformation as ammo for their argument to gatelock these items away from people.

I have all of them. I do not think any of them are fancy or special enough to warrant being time limited, minus the scars, tattoos, titles, sails, etc- the stuff that was MEANT to be time limited.

  • Actually there’s been a lot more than 2. A bunch of the stuff from Season Four was put back into the game not long after 4 was over. Some as in game rewards, some as emporium items. The costume and weapons from Season Three. There’s been more. I think a lot of it goes unnoticed because it wasn’t the popular items. But they have actually followed through on their word of adding back season content after the season is over.

  • @abjectarity The paid ones do not count. The Plunder Pass contains only items that were, are, or will be in the emporium. The emporium is very anti-fomo and 90% of paid cosmetics are not time limited, and those that are, typically return annually. The paid Cosmetics in the pass are more of a sneak peak into what will come to the emporium soon, rather than new ones for the season. Those Plunder Pass cosmetics were designed for the emporium, and are put on the pass for early access.

As for normal, non-paid cosmetics… I don’t recall anything more than the Jade Eye of Reach and the Legendary Curse. Could you please fetch me the list of items that you’re saying have returned from previous seasonal tracks?

  • @klutchxking518 right… free stuff… Wicked Web shirt, it is now a reward for one of the FOTD commendations. Barrel Disguise emote was added to Larinna’s inventory of doubloon items.

  • @abjectarity wicked web shirt? No, that clothing set is still locked away. I believe you’re thinking of the Wicked Web Halloween Event pieces, which weren’t on the Season pass (The blunder, tankard, cannons, and figurehead). As for the emotes… those were designed for the emporium as every other emote is. But i’ll count those. So that makes 4 items.

  • @klutchxking518 Wicked Web shirt, season 4 level 6, base item. It, along with a few of the items from the FOTD event are now programmed as commendation cosmetics as well. Or at least I think it is, as I have it but I did not play SoT from March 2021 until February 2022, but I have the shirt.

  • @abjectarity I’m not entirely sure on that as I’d have seen it in the clothing shop if it was. I just did a big search through of the shops before I made the post. Only two items I found were the ones I mentioned, I didn’t check larinna or think of the emotes.

  • Yeah I can’t be positive on the shirt. I didn’t play for those 10 months and when I came back I started on my FOTD commendations and it seemed like I got all the wicked web items mentioned in this thread so far at the same time. Otherwise I’m not sure how I ended up with it.

But I always understood the season pass discussion about items returning to the game as it will cost real money, which is why it made sense to me when items were put in the emporium. But you say they were addressing the free items that would eventually return as free again?

  • @abjectarity Right, so the pass is split into the Seasonal Track and Plunder Pass Track. These two tracks have never mixed before. The plunder pass cosmetics have always been emporium sets from the past, or that have yet to hit the emporium.

But the Seasonal Track cosmetics which are all supposed to return, (except for the Titles, Flag, Sail, Makeup, Tattoos, and Scars named after the season’s title, like shroudbreaker, blue horizon, cursed bones, etc) have only seen two (four counting the two emotes) of those free items return to the shop, even though Rare originally announced their plan before seasons came out, that all the free items (minus those mentioned) would return, as free items in the shop, locked behind commendations.

Players who didn’t read this, Or understand it, fought valiantly to keep the items exclusive for longer and longer, and now, we have only seen 2 cosmetics from the past 2 years of season’s actually return.

  • I guess that doesn’t surprise me considering they seem to almost have abandoned outpost cosmetics. The emporium gets paid cosmetics on a regular basis, but outpost cosmetics haven’t seen much refresh in a very long time. We’ve gotten broken up sets of cosmetics, but no full sets in forever… in fact I think the last time we had a truly full set of in game only cosmetics(clothing, tools, weapons, ship, etc… and no twitch drops or emporium involvement) was the Dark Adventure set… and we know how long it’s been since that came out…

  • @d3adst1ck Oh! I didn’t even notice the bit about Seaposts when I checked this out. Yes! I think that’d be an amazing way to make Seaposts shops more useful. I always thought it’d be cool if they had their own exclusive cosmetic sets that they sold the pieces of by chance, so you could try and collect some every time you stop by. But having their inventory expanded and sell some seasonal items would be a great idea. All for it.
