I would like to know what you have planned for the wave of cheaters that has invaded the game, I play every day and my encounters with this vermin become daily and even several times sometimes.
What will be the fixes because it's getting worse day by day?
Cheater Waves
They won't publically state anything. I've heard talk of a massive ban wave that came with yesterdays update, but no official confirmation.
Future plans won't be discussed either because they aren't going to give the cheat makers a heads up. Most companies will change something or add new detection and then ban a week or two later to try to catch as many as possible before they're aware they are being detected and are able to modify the cheat signature.
If there is truth to the fairly widespread chatter of a ban wave it's gonna be a public cheat
which is what I've always said, easily detectable, not safe, don't use them, don't buy into the narratives of "free and easy and safe"
or the inaccurate narrative that they don't detect and ban cheats on this game.
the issue they have is alt account repeat offenders, not detection of all the public cheats that people are always talking about.
if there was a wave and it's being talked about it's because people got popped on their mains, there wouldn't be as much chatter if people were just getting popped on alts.
Which would be a win on the topic.

I can say it's definitely happened, a friend of mine somehow let themselves get caught in the wave, and I've heard rumors that a handful of players that were in some of the competitive communities also got hit.
I'm still upset at my friend for letting themselves get into that situation, but as far as I'm concerned, this is just gonna put a couple of more SoT addicts on alt accounts that they'll just lay low with, or go to town on using more cheats and hacks until the game goes offline years later.

People make mistakes, just how it goes
consequences happen and people can move on from it and if they choose to they can learn from it
might be a ban but it's not a permanent mark on a person, they will bounce back and the mistake becomes life experience
The problem with this cheater waves is that Rare will do nothing against is, the game makes money, developing an anti cheat would cost too much time and money for them, especially since they are releasing a new game soon... Unfortunately, I think that apart from bans, nothing more will be done by the developers, just enjoy the good time we have left, because all the good players break or cheat to counter the cheats. Moreover, cheaters ban buy accounts and therefore make money and it is I think, the most likely hypothesis, that Rare does nothing at all, because the game work and sells very well.

Accounts are banned regularly
reports are handled and enforcement implemented regularlyPeople filling the net with cheating posts that are based on limited encounters and cherry picked gameplay from content creators does not mean that devs are not invested in countering cheating nor does it mean that they aren't actively working on it and enforcing the rules through the report system and whatever prevention and detection process they use.
People are free to post their opinions and frustrations on the topic of cheating but that doesn't mean that there is inaction or lack concern/focus about cheating.
None of us want to see the environment harmed by cheating, not the majority of the forums, or the large majority of players not on the forums or any of the devs.
ban yes, but not ban ip... or ban mac, etc. and I never said that the moderators don't do their job (and still when I'm told there's not enough evidence when it's blatantly obvious the guys have a level of NAL when they have 3 hours of play...)
On the other hand the anti cheats are clearly not there and there won't be and I'm sure of it. There are 2 reasons why there is no more arena, 1: time, 2: cheat. Just look at the cheat videos, they date back to... the arena, still functional of course.

Are you sure it isn't "when you play hourglass" and not everytime you play SoT
Because...cheaters have always been ingame, but they only apply to pvp.

What will be the fixes because it's getting worse day by day?Platform? I would hope, since it happens often, you've started recording encounters? while I'm sure they have some level of.... cheat detection (Checking for fake coins? lol) it is what it is as far as it being addressed go. Cheaters bad, next question. All I do know know is "Xbox only" seems to be not NEARLY as bad with said problem.
Were you watching Mixelplx's twitch stream yesterday by chance? If not you should check it out. He was doing the hourglass when he matched against a duo-sloop, that had the ability to summon kegs from seemingly nowhere (which were used against Mixel's ship), restore their ship, swim very fast in the water, and were unkillable. Mixel sunk, and these players let loose with racist homophobic words towards him and on his stream.
Mixel respawned, restocked, flipped the hourglass and dove again, and even though he had a new opponent, these players were also hacking. Mixel asked them to flip his boat---which they (several times), and ended up just logging out after that.
More and more of these hacks are happening by certain players, and it seems to be spurred on by players wanting to perform better to get their curse(s). According to Mixel, reporting them does no good either, since gamepass is so cheap to reroll.
I have no idea how/why players feel the need to cheat (kinda makes the game pointless), but it's happening more and more now. I'm glad more streamers are putting this out there. I hope something is done, and soon.

Pretty irresponsible when streamers do it without context knowing that people are going to take it and run with it.
If streamers coordinated and a group kept track of overall random season 8 pvp encounters and kept track of only the obvious cheating (not their sus stuff) and then marked it with region/stamp and then kept track of repeat encounters with obvious cheaters so they were not counted as more it would at least be interesting to examine
Streamers putting out cherry picked encounters in content where people had hundreds of fights in a short amount of time with a lot of repeat fighting doesn't show much to people that are looking for some sort of potential accuracy in their predictions of overall use.
People talk about "there are so many people talking about it now" a lot of it comes straight out of streamer communities, there are a few popular streamers where pretty much every public take they make ends up here and other areas. Cheating and other topics. They see the clips streamers post or are a part of and run here with it.
Cheating, toxicity related stuff, alliances, whatever it is, when it starts popping up here in bunches it's not difficult to find the source.
It's not an organic mass outcry when so much of it is coming from streamer communities that are largely using the same info/encounters for their claims.
I couldn't agree more... I never play anymore and jumped on this week afew times and ran into ALOT of cheaters.... Not just aimbot like it used to be... seems they can do whatever they want?! speed hack, spawn in items, repair the boat, put water in other people's boats...
It is a huge problem and needs dealing with ban waves wont cut it... These cheaters know how to spoof their hardware id's so they can just buy the game over and over again
We need some type of in game report system

I always found it totally rubbish that it's the player's responsability to do that.
You have to have a good GPU and space on your hard drive. Some people don't. No justice for them I guess.
They have Microsoft. Maybe, just maybe, it could be on their end to record everything that happens, you know, like in ANY modern game ?
No. Always blame the player for your own shortcomings, easier.
Well just tie me to a plank and toss me over board for asking a honest question I had. Point the anger elsewhere bud, i was just trying to see what you've done to log it. its just as irritating to me when i cant play with my pc buddies without flying kegs and instant ladders, aimbot and auto ship repair. Yes, i took and have videos, and so have dozens of people, its all over youtube. I actually agree with you, some before ya burn a guy at the stake....

I don't know of any other games that record and store video for you. Which ones do that?
I think it's a bad explanation he made, modern games normally record all the inputs and actions a player makes. This is the case with : Trackmania, Fortnite, PUBG, and many, many competitive games. Even a lot of minecraft servers even though it's not really a competitive game anymore, the big servers record all inputs and stocks for at least 1 month.

I've previously had a moderator spawn in-game on our boat, inform us that cheaters are on the server, that they are shutting the server down. That's something.

Reported some guy on Wednesday, I got a email informing me they banned him Thursday.. He was fly hacking and landed on my friends boat for "food" (I was watching as my friend streamed on discord) and but my friend used the hour glass to dive and get away from the cheater before he could bring a keg to the boat. Today (Saturday) ran into a cheater when i was doing galleon hour glass match making. This one was also galleon match making.. had a super similar name to the one before but not the same account, it was the same guy!!!! His voice matched the voice in the recording of the other encounter! 2 days and im seeing this guy back again! they aren't doing enough to prevent cheaters. Where is the IP bans??? Today that cheater tried to frame me, saying I was teleporting all over the place and the cheater than proceeded to teleport me. Thank god I started recording very early in the fight the moment I saw this guys name. I could be in hot water myself! Cheating has defiantly been in a uptick, most of the community dont come to the forums or bother reporting as the cheaters just get a new account, they feel its pointless to keep nagging the subject. As seen in this post "Cheaters has always been a thing" is the argument. This mindset makes ppl not want to report, not bother with it cause well its always a thing so.. these ppl just learned to accept it.. Thats a terrible mindset!
This week ive decided to not play Sea of theives anymore until they crack down on this, as its really increasing since season 8. In the last few weeks here ive encountered cheaters more than the last 2yrs ive played! every day this week ive ran into a cheater in every play session sometimes even more frequently. Only time I ever encountered a cheater before season 8 was at the final moments of arena, right before shut down, when everyone was grinding for the stuff in its final days. I had never saw a blatant cheater since than, til now, and i have well over 2,000hrs in this game. its worst than ever before. Something more needs to be done. they will only lose the player base til they crack down and stop it. you think hour glass match making is hard now or before the recent patch.. just wait til no one is doing it cause of these cheaters, cause no one will be playing this game period.
@kelz8607 As I said above, the developers won't do anything, it costs too much and it makes them money. For them everything is fine in the best of all worlds. The Partners still stream the game saying that there are very rarely cheaters, Rare is silent on this. I'm telling you, pvp will only live for a few months and there will only be cheaters.
It's a bit like the shootings in the USA, a shooting has a lot of chance to make a shooting in the following days, ba it's the same with cheats, a cheater has a lot of chance to turn someone into a cheater because he can't win against cheaters...
It literally becomes a snake that bites its own tail. And this is becoming an increasingly untenable situation for legal players, I've seen many players I've met cheat, they never told me but it's so spoted when you have an ESP, or an aimbot...

yeah the comparison is bold I know, but the overall principle is the same. It's scientifically proven.
That actually sounds quite interesting. Are you able to link to this scientific evidence?

Pretty untrue, most streamers that come across blatant cheaters either attempt to fight them or immediately leave the server they're in. I don't think players, especially streamers, that are looking for fun, healthy, and fair fights should ever come across actual cheaters, but at the same token, it seems oddly targeted if the opposing players know who's on that ship.

...That's a really awful and dangerous comparison, players cheating isn't going to turn other players into cheaters (theoretically). I feel with the recent banwave it seems that because it took Rare about 3 months to actively address this situation, some may have given up on their own integrity on the game because of Rare's slower-than-normal action (I blame the December-January rot) and the increase in cheaters, but that doesn't mean people now want to cheat just to make things "fair". Despite all the negative encounters, it's still a fairly small portion of the playerbase, and because cheaters are zipping through the MMR by wiping fights, if you're losing already, you're probably not coming across them as easily.

...unless you know exactly what was on their screen/what program they opened, you most definitely don't want to assume a random player you meet has cheats opened. Players can be very skilled at this broken, nearly 5 year old game (if hitreg is on their side of course). ESP and aimbot are not very easy to suspect without again, knowing what programs they actually have opened.

Um... That's... not how this game works...
This game's "moderators" don't have that kind of immediate power. These servers are very much more akin to the wild west, but crooks are only dealt with once someone brings a working camera into the situation and films everything going down.
Also I'm very sure you've likely had an encounter with either cheaters, or were extremely unaware of a random player being able to board your boat, and get a nice tuck in before they tell you that. Boarding and tucking when a crew is unaware is a trick that content creators love to do, and they can say anything they like until you find them.
@pumpa-cat
Yes sure, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0117259. But we're getting away from the original subject, I made a rather dubious comparison and I apologise for that. But it made me think of this. Personally, I'd rather quit the game or do TDM with friends than play PVP hourglass right now.

I think you're way off base, I say that because I've seen it with my own eyes, people legit cheat because they're sick of cheaters and they just want to tryhard the game. It's not about everyone, but in EU I see it a lot (especially on the SoT FR community I see it a lot because I'm French and I don't particularly have a lot of circle of trust in the game, I only have 200H on sot of which 40h I played with people. But I see a lot of people who have 100h of play who play as well as 1000h, it's really, really weird, but I still give them the benefit of the doubt.)

Did you really play the hourglass pvp ??????? It's a troll, it's not possible, guys who put a snipe through a wave, in the water when you can't even see them, who know exactly where you are on a galleon, like they spawn and they know where you are instantly, NAL players ALL THE TIME in solo sloop. Who tp on your boat. Excuse my expression, but clean your sh*t up in the eyes.

this is one of those things people repeatedly say but it's not like people can't do this legit.
Shooting cannons through waves and sniping through waves based on prediction of movement as the wave goes up and down is not some unheard of thing, it's fairly common in a game where waves have been getting more and more wild.
Some of us were practicing shots like that on kegs literally years ago, in the water, when everyone had kegs in the crows.
Even distance shots where something isn't rendered in is possible, before people stopped carrying kegs around all over people were hitting all sorts of trick shots with stuff like that.
I think some just don't remember how long some people have been playing this game and how many times they have been in situations of hitting clutch shots, or they brought it in from other games where they practiced shooting a lot.
People could hit kegs that aren't even rendered in bouncing around the ocean in a crows years ago but they can't hit shots in pvp now? Just a bad sus call a lot of the time on this stuff imo.
I often shoot cannonballs through the waves at Megs. With these creatures, when they are not extremely close to the ship, they can be difficult to spot as they circle your ship due to the fact they are just on the surface, but are obscured by the waves. As soon as I see a glimpse of the shark I aim my cannon ahead of it, even if it means I’m aiming at the waves. Then I fire. If I get it right, which I am getting better at, then the cannonball travels through the waves and hits the Meg. Sometimes I do not see the Meg or the hit, but I know I’ve hit it as I get that little musical hit indicator.

I've misunderstood, I'm not talking about cannon fire, but sniper fire.
