What changed? (corrupt file issues)

  • I started having every one of my sessions since January end in a corrupt file error. I've done what the information page said about it already (Clean Uninstall, Re-install, delete the core file listed and do an integrity check to replace it, I've actually deleted the WHOLE CORE FILES contents and had it reinstalled too one of my tries... I even replaced my HD with a stable SDD and made sure all files were fixed and/or replaced. I have run an anti-virus check. I have added the executable and the entire sot folders to my windows exemptions list, I have no overclocked hardware).

I have been using Windows 10. I am up to date. My drivers are up to date (Nvidia Gforce 1060 with updates including the one released February 8th, but some of this testing was already done before the 8th update). I CANNOT get the game to STOP corrupting files. I'm running with fairly low graphics settings in game compared to what I used to just to see if that helps (it isn't). I'm getting 60+ FPS. I have 1G up/down for net. I am hardwired to the router, not on wireless. I am not overheating. I am not installing the game from the Windows store, I use the Steam Client and versions.

So. In January WHAT CHANGED? I know that this error has existed for a while, but I noticed that in January the Rare team put out an FAQ to try and help people with this problem, supposedly indicating a huge influx of users being affected. What am I missing?! I do not see anything in my system indicating Hardware Failure happening either other than moving over to booting everything off a new and stable SSD (and all files were fixed and replaced including windows and drivers to make sure there weren't errors left from the HD if any).

Have the devs or community made any progress on this bug that I haven't found yet? My gameplay is very smooth and comfortable until it just decides each session between minutes to hours that it corrupted another core file (it is never the same file). I am also not seeing any hints in my system's kernel logs or event viewer.

  • That's really odd. I can't say I've heard of this problem.

SoT Support Article on Corrupt Core Files

Just sharing the support link for trying to fix the issue. A Google search on SoT corrupt Core files brings up experiences over the years by players, but this article was either added or updated in January, and searching the net I've been seeing more complaints about it recently.

Sadly, all suggestions so far have not resolved the files from continuing to corrupt it go missing mid game after an install and integrity check. It's so frustrating.

  • Have had this exact same thing happened, even in the middle of hourglass battles. Rare pls fix.

  • Would a COMPLETE reinstall of Sea of Thieves fix the problem?

  • @personalc0ffee I wish but no, it did not. I mentioned I did a clean uninstall/install but it's easy to overlook that since I listed A LOT. This has been an ongoing process of elimination ^^;

We've reached the point that I'm going to play on the Steam Deck instead and pass it through the computer. The issue is it's my partner's steam deck so this is a temporary solution until more information comes about or Rare is able to fix the issue for those affected who ran out of options :(

  • Corrupt File Error ON STEAM DECKt

Okay. This just got ridiculous. I am playing 100% on a steam deck. I just used my elgato capture device to capture a screenshot of the error when it came up. I am no longer running the files from my desktop or SSD or anything. This is right off my partner's Steam Deck.

I'm going to be using this thread as a reference now as I open my support ticket. I'm pretty sure this is a RARE issue now.

  • Have you tried adding this file from someone else and putting it where it goes? This can be difficult, I understand but I can only assume this file is stuck somewhere and isn't downloading properly.

Like maybe there's a corrupt one somewhere and when you are uninstalling, it isn't removing the bugged file and the game keeps trying to read it.

  • @personalc0ffee I could but it's never the same file, and it's officially doing it on someone else's steam deck now. I'm starting to test things on my account. I removed my Curse (the siren shrines one) to start and will continue removing some legend items until eventually I get a new result or run out of stuff to take off.

I did just submit a ticket finally highlighting everything since it's doing the same thing on a Steam Deck that isn't mine and already had the game on it running fine for them.

  • Did this issue get fixed yet? I’m having the same problem here and I’ve tried every fix I’ve seen online and nothing is working.

  • Sorry but you guys affected by this are probably going to have to files support tickets to get very advanced help.

You can do that here: https://support.seaofthieves.com/

  • @geminaimist

hi I'm just now experiencing this issue after the latest update (not sure if it is related but who knows at this point) I have tried literally everything you have mentioned to no avail. was wondering if you ever got the issue resolved?
