Having issues running SoT on the Steam Deck (Long loading time and Ashbeard when attempting login)

  • My fiance and I got our Deck the other day, and we installed SoT yesterday. Since we've downloaded it, we've been having difficulties with logging in.

We'll enter our login info, and we'll get the "Signing on for adventure!" loading prompt for AGES, and then it'll hit us with the "Ashbeard" error, telling us to sign in again.

Does anybody have any potential fixes? I've tried just about anything, and nothing has fixed this

  • Had the same problem on Steamdeck OLED and fixed it thanks to a hint in a YouTube comment. The following worked for me:

    1. On any Smartphone: Get the Microsoft Autheticator App. Login with your Xbox/Microsoft Data in the App.
    2. Turn on Steamdeck and switch to Desktop Mode
    3. Type your mail adress somewhere (text editor, filebrowser etc) so that you can copy it using the mouse (Steam Button + Right pad + Rt for marking and LT for rightclicking and copying mail adress).
    4. Open Steam and then Sea of Thieves in Desktop Mode
    5. Press "Start Game" (with Mouse via Steam Button + right pad + RT)
    6. XBox Live should open. Paste your previously copied mail adress. Note: I could not open Steam Keyboard when Xbox Live is open in Desktopmode using Steam+X, so I had to use this workaround.
    7. Microsoft Authenticator app should pop up on Smartphone asking for confirmation of Steamdeck login.
    8. You should now be logged in. Feel free to connect steam account and xbox account in the subsequent menu, find xbox accounts from steam friends etc.
    9. Exit game. Go back to game mode.
    10. Start Sea of Thieves in Game Mode. You should already be logged in and can directly "Start game".

I was also able to Create crews and invite friends (Xbox Accounts). And they could invite me from xbox app to join their crew via steamdeck.

    Hope this helps!

  • I spent some time and found that when I switched it to proton experimental it works
