Rare is killing Sea of Thieves

  • I have over 2,000 hours in Sea of Thieves, and although that doesn't even compare to the hours others have put into the game, I believe my opinion on this matter is valid.

I haven't been a part of the Sea of Thieves community from the very beginning, but I put my heart and soul into this game, I made this game my home. I looked up to Rare, I praised Rare, but now, I see the truth.
The game is dying, and neither Rare or Microsoft are trying to save it. They think pumping out new content, like Captaincy Ships, the hourglass, rebuilding New Golden Sands Outpost, etc will save the game. But it won't.

The reason Sea of Thieves is dying, isn't because it's a dated game, because it's 5 years old, because "all games dies". It's because Rare is not pushing the updates that matter. From the very beginning, cheaters have been a problem, but with the release of the hourglass, the hacker community has grown, hackers are becoming more confident, blatantly hacking. And what is Rare doing to counteract this issue? Nothing.
A 5 year old multiplayer game, that not only had a rocky start like many games, but proved themselves by adding new exhilarating content to the game, doesn't even have an anticheat. And has made absolutely no announcements on implementing an anticheat.
I want to believe that they are working on an anticheat, but I can't believe that. Sea of Thieves has made Rare and Microsoft millions of dollars, and if they really seemed to care about fighting the cheating community in Sea of Thieves, they would have partnered with a trustworthy anticheat, like Easy AntiCheat temporarily while their developers make a more permanent anticheat for the game.
Shelling out thousands, or hundreds of thousands of dollars to make an anticheat for Sea of Thieves might sound stupid, because then the entire cheating community will leave the game, which the community is massive, I would say at least 20% of the playerbase has tried a cheat in Sea of Thieves. And losing your playerbase is deadly to a game, but think of the amount of players who will come back to Sea of Thieves after they learn Rare finally implemented an anticheat, and they finally don't have to worry about having gunpowder barrels teleported onto their ship, or players blatantly teleporting onto their ships ladder. The playerbase will throw even more money at Sea of Thieves knowing that they don't have to be scared about running into hackers every day and quitting the game, ultimately wasting the hundreds of dollars they spent on the games cosmetics.

Releasing a new multiplayer game, that has a PvP system without anticheat is okay. But growing that games community for 5 years, and then releasing an entire season revolving around PvP while still not implementing an anticheat is hysterical.

Ontop of this problem, the punishment system is completely laughable. You can get permanently banned for just being a tiny bit toxic. If you sink someone and call them "trash" and that butthurt pirate reports you to Rare, you'll get a temporary ban, and if you do it again you're gone, from the game, for good.
Rare you are trying to keep your community friendly, in the worst way possible. If someone is found being toxic, communication ban them! Don't ban them from the entire game! Players will get mad in a PvPvE game, and pirates will say stupid things, but banning them completely from the game for saying something slightly toxic is stupid. When people get banned this way, they learn how laughable the punishment system is, and they either drop the game for good, or they get around the ban, by buying the Xbox Game Pass for just $1 the first month, and then, they can either keep playing the game, like all pirates should, or they can let the negative thoughts in their head rain free, and cheat in the game, spread toxicity, ruin the environment.

Rare, whether you like it or not, you are killing this game. I've already given up on the game, I play from time to time with my friends, but I don't spend nearly as much time in the game as I once did. I don't spend money on the game anymore. And sooner or later, the entire community will follow, no matter how fun, or exciting your new content releases are.

I have a feeling this entire post will get locked or even deleted by Rare's CSR's because "Discussion of disciplinary actions taken against individual players is not permitted on the Forums" (Although this isn't discussing a ban, like many other posts before me), or "Toxicity", but I still have hope that triheadedmonkey won't close this post.

  • You pretty much gotta be a line crosser for a while to see a permanent ban

This community loves themselves a report but so many people are regularly saying all kinds of eh stuff without an issue, from partners to streamers to other daily players outside of content creation. It's not like people actually walk on eggshells when playing.

It's typically people camping people and pounding their chest while they are doing it that eventually get in trouble outside of the typical random player that yells inappropriate stuff type of thing.

As far as cheating goes I dunno, outside of the obvious stuff it's really tough to tell, even though people act like it's easy.

I disagree with that first statement. Because it's false. In the past, my friends and I always played Sea of Thieves together, and throughout the thousands of hours of playing together, the only thing they said wrong, were "You're trash", twice, and they both received permanent bans. Just for saying "You're trash", that's the lowest of the low when it comes to toxicity.

And the second statement, people regularly say things like this without any issue because they get lucky, because the other pirates don't report them. My issue is that if the pirates do report them for just being mildly toxic (to be honest, I wouldn't even say "you're trash" is toxic) they'll get banned from the entire game, instead of letting them keep playing the game, but instead, communication ban them.

And for the cheating statement, I don't condone doing literally any of this but one of my friends gave up on Sea of Thieves after their stupid ban, so they found a cheat, a free one at that, not going to promote it cos although I hate Sea of Thieves now, I don't want to help Rare bury the game in dirt. Ontop of the cheat being free, it was literally just a dll you inject, a multiplayer game, with PvP, let's you INJECT game changing dll's into the game. Bro. And after my friends researched getting around hardware bans, IP bans, etc, getting around those bans are just way too easy aswell. Although we can't make a ban harder to get around, what we can do is stop creating more hackers. Rare is creating hackers by banning people unfairly, for just two small mistakes. If that player called someone the n word, or gay, or something, I get it (still should only be a communication ban though) but saying "You're trash"?? Come ON! There's a LITERAL "ROLLS ON DECK LAUGHING" Pirate chat!

Okie. Regardless of the time you put in, every players Opinion matters. No one is special.

I looked up to Rare, I praised Rare

    That kind of sad :(

The game is dying, and neither Rare or Microsoft are trying to save it

5 years of content, still more content too come and more story elements. Sure..it dying...

They think pumping out new content, like Captaincy Ships, the hourglass, rebuilding New Golden Sands Outpost, etc will save the game. But it won't.

Keeps me going. Like many other games, new content always brings in new players

The reason Sea of Thieves is dying, isn't because it's a dated game, because it's 5 years old, because "all games dies"

Minecraft released 12 years ago and still being played today. Its old yet..not dying or dead.

It's because Rare is not pushing the updates that matter.

    Define "Updates that matter"

From the very beginning, cheaters have been a problem

Which beginning? I can tell you D1 there were maybe 2 reports I recall ever seeing someone was 'cheating' but after that nothing. Only after Arena & Hourglass came into play did they skyrocket.

but with the release of the hourglass, the hacker community has grown, hackers are becoming more confident, blatantly hacking

Not Hackers. Modders is the correct term here. Hackers would imply they broke the game itself and gave them super powers beyond the game itself, like any cannon they shoot is a curse or they kill you with a banana weapon.
Modders would be silly stuff, like teleporting and maybe unable to be killed.

And what is Rare doing to counteract this issue? Nothing.

Has any game ever countered cheats in any game? Some have tried but in the end, every fix can be re-broken.
You may not notice but it does.

And has made absolutely no announcements on implementing an anticheat.

They have spoken about the cheaters and future planning it gonna take to combat them. It not an easy thing.

I want to believe that they are working on an anticheat, but I can't believe that.

Maybe for someone who claims to praise Rare, you know about there Podcast and them talking about it. :P

don't have to worry about having gunpowder barrels teleported onto their ship, or players blatantly teleporting onto their ships ladder.

Hahaha...This went from, The game is dying by age to simple. I've been killed by "assumed" cheaters so the game is dying because of that.

You can get permanently banned for just being a tiny bit toxic.

Speaking of your own experience? Im confused where you get this info.

If you sink someone and call them "trash" and that butthurt pirate reports you to Rare, you'll get a temporary ban, and if you do it again you're gone, from the game, for good.

Well..yeah don't do that. That is very rude thing to say and not even funny. There is proof too, Im sure they have screenshot or recording of it to back it up. Cheats on other hand, nobody seems to have proof.

Players will get mad in a PvPvE game, and pirates will say stupid things, but banning them completely from the game for saying something slightly toxic is stupid.

A smart player wouldnt say anything, even if they are upset. No such thing as "slightly" toxic. So far Im under the impression you are talking about your own experience here...or a friend?

When people get banned this way, they learn how laughable the punishment system is

Yeah, laughable that they got called out on being rude and that is laughable. Punished.

Rare, whether you like it or not, you are killing this game.

You just proved above its not Rare, but the players themselves.

And sooner or later, the entire community will follow

    Hmmhmm. Another 5 years

"Discussion of disciplinary actions taken against individual players is not permitted on the Forums"

ah HA so it was true.

people often have a story like this and I just don't buy it outside of maybe a very rare case of unjust banning.

everyone I've ever seen banned that was a longer time player was known for being someone that crossed the line, their friends always come to their defense but from an objective view without personal connection it's just about always a situation where they were habitually playing with ToS fire.

  • @drownedelite863 Regarding the subject of cheaters, I'd recommend having a listen to this section of the latest podcast.
