Pirate Customisation & IPG Influence

  • I know it's been talked about many times but everyone I've spoken to about Sea of Thieves always has the same thing they bring up again and again: Lack of Customisation / IPG. I understand the intent behind it had two main reasons: Quick to get into game (Which isn't true for lots of my friends) and making everyone look different. There's a few ways I've seen it discussed and here's a few ideas:

    • Generation Tags: Add a few options to it (Only generate Female / Male Pirates for example)

    • Locked Pirates Influence Generator - Locked pirates will influence the generator to create more ones like them

    • Keep certain aspect, Keep a certain part for all the next pirates generated in that session

    Unlikely, but:

    • Just give us full customisation, I see lots of people wanting this but I can understand the work that'll go into it will far slower to impediment than the other ones suggested above, especially considering the considerable about of UI needed for the creation screen alone.

Suggested thanks to my neverending attempts at getting a cool scarred lady pirate and ending up giving up due to physical pain of regenerating pirates.

    .
...Also, Can we have small head accessories to show off our cool hair better? All the caps seem to hide them away and I think it'd be cool to have a hanging wavy cloth or something, Thank you for reading!
I'd also love to hear other people's ideas on the suggested ideas on the IPG & Influence, is there something you wanted your pirate to have but you couldn't have it too?

This has been brought up countless times...so many times that you would think the devs address it.

I 100% agree with you. It is an awful system.

In the beginning, I quickly became frustrated with the IPG and just ended up choosing one. Well, I have now invested a lot of time in SoT and just became a Pirate Legend. I purchased a Pirate Appearance Potion with the thought of finally making my pirate look like what I envision him to be. Again, the IPG quickly became frustrating.

First and foremost, all pirates should be in their underwear only, with no hair, eye black, tattoos, etc. There shouldn't be anything on them that can be added/purchased in game. Second, they should all have a standard front facing pose. Third, the lighting needs to be much better. As it currently is, it is so hard to really see what a pirate looks like, even if you like the IPG. It's like the devs purposely made it difficult to choose. And no, I don't agree that the IPG increases pirate diversity, it limits it by forcing us to look a certain way.

Open up and add customization and I bet we see everyone's creative side and diversity only add to the different looks that our pirate's could have.

Whoever came up with the idea of the IPG should be keel hauled, walk the plank, and fed to the sharks! Arr!!!

  • Rare have commented on this in the past saying that a full customisation of our characters leads to people creating broken looking avatars that go against the game’s aesthetic. We all know trolls will create super tall and fat characters with weird noses and eyes etc.

    Down vote. Sorry.

  • @tesiccl

Have you seen the IPG lately? It is full of characters who are tall/skinny, super fat, with weird noses, etc. So that is as far from a valid argument that you could possibly use.

  • @o43objm not my argument, it’s Rare’s. They have stated why they didn’t allow full customisation when developing the game.

  • We don't need full customization with a hundred sliders for my pirate's height, weight, nose size, eye separation, et cetera. It'd be really nice if they just did what mobile games do and let us select amongst the available body shapes, head shapes, faces, et cetera. Basically instead of the IPG choosing head four, body three, skin two, face five, just let us pick them.

And give us all one appearance potion so we can all finally have the pirate of our fantasies.

    Problem solved.

  • @lordqulex

    This is the way.

  • Another thing about the "Infinite" Pirate Generator is that it isn't really infinite. There are a finite number of physical attributes, which will lead to a finite number of combinations. Today, there have been at least 1 million plus pirates created, significantly reducing the remaining number of possible combinations available. Especially if one is trying to create a male pirate, as that has obviously been the majority of pirates created.

For a game all about cosmetics and appearance, it immediately takes the freedom of customization away from you at the very start...and then makes it an unpleasant experience which worsens over time as more pirates are created. Very strange decision.

I will take my hate for the IPG to Davey Jone's Locker and hope that the scallywag who created it, be forever hunted by the Flying Dutchman.

  • Although I am very satisfied with my pirate I do agree IPG needs an update. It was a nightmare getting the pirate I have now. I hate to say it but I spent nearly 3500 ancient coins over the last year trying to get the perfect pirate (I have a little OCD) and I finally found the nearly perfect pirate imo. There are some gems in the IPG but the amount of rolls it takes to get there can be overwhelming.

A simple preference option would be nice like •No scars •Male/Female also, change pose with a click of a button, zoom in, and better lighting, personally I think the IPG should be outdoors in the daylight.

  • @tesiccl -
I understand the troll argument, even if there is already a lot of trolls in Sea Of Thieves gameplay adding onto it I can't imagine would help

However, these suggestions are not to add further customisation onto the actual creation itself but for the player to have more control over the randomiser / IPG, so nothing would be added into the actual creation that couldn't already be found in the current IPG.

  • The fact that people so desperately want their pirate to have an exact look is just proof the IPG is working. It is designed so you can not get the perfect pirate. I see no reason to change it the IPG, its working as intended.

Potions they could change so you can just buy them after using the IPG rather than before. This could remove the prompt for those of you who that want to change your pirate.

Also 5 years in, I don't see them changing it. It's just not broken.

  • @captain-coel

Yes, the IPG is not broken and is working as intended. It still is a terrible design that needs improvement, even if you are totally against allowing full control of customization.

#1 is gender...let us filter male/female. This one improvement would greatly decrease the the frustration and time spent for those looking for a certain pirate.

    #2 is skin color

    #3 is body type

Those are the big three. Most people can immediately get close to the pirate they want with those. It still allows for a great diversity in attributes we don't have control over.

Rare...just these three filters would completely transform the IPG into a more fun and pleasant experience while maintaining the great diversity of different looking pirates.
