I was playing a game the other day where loot chests could sometimes be a disguised mimic creature and got to thinking such a thing could be interesting in Sea of Thieves.
These mimics could be like the creatures you see in D&D or some form of construct. We know from Reaper Bones pets that living constructs are a thing.
To make things interesting I was thinking that a mimic treasure chest would not reveal it's true self till sometime after it was brought aboard a player ship.
There could be a variety of different ways a mimic could interact with a ship and it's crew.
Maybe one is like a trickster. It might throw loot overboard, undock a rowboat, or drop anchor. Before trying to skitter out of sight and "tuck".
Another could be your traditional aggressive mimic. Once it reveals itself, it attacks the crew till dealt with.
The gluten mimic. Its priority is to go below deck and eat whatever you have in your barrels. Could be variants of this one that consider the contents of different barrels as their preferred delicacy.
A fire mimic. When this one wakes, it skitters about the ship periodically releasing fire till the crew can deal with it or it hides.
I'd say the chance of finding a mimic should be low. Maybe not quite ancient skelly low, but shouldn't be a regular occurrence.
Maybe even set around an event. This could be the result of a known or unknown faction seeding mimics in the Sea of Thieves for some nefarious purpose.
