Hourglass - How to get better at PVP?

  • Hi,

I’m really struggling getting some win. Me and my crew always end up being spawn killed on our destroyed boat even if :

    • We try to repair
    • We try to shoot canonball at their canon and bellow deck
    • We always cover the ladders, but there is always one guy who still manage to get onboard even if we shoot multiple time.

I’m not new to the game, but I always have difficulty managing PVP.

Is there ships better than others? I always go for the bigger, but I feel like it’s a disaster in term of coordination. It start well, but it always end up with one guy repairing, one guy bucketing, one guy on the helm and one guy on canon/ladder which isn’t very effective…

I’m also very tired of people leaving after sinking. It’s just annoying I have to look for new players again.

    Thank you for the tips!

  • Low activity and high skill makes it a tough night out for a lot of crews.

First thing I would do is not grind it, casually participate and focus on things that won't burn you out

Second thing I would do is switch to solo for HG. It's your best chance to get some wins and MAYBE improve. Hg isn't actually a good spot to improve unless someone is already pretty solid at pvp. You'll still get wrecked sometimes but you'll eventually start having a much better chance of at least getting some reps in and maybe improvement.

  • I always start out by turning the wheel to the far right and raising the sails half way. I try to get behind the enemy and de-mast them, all the while shooting some holes into them. If you can manage to one ball someone that helps as well, less people to bail or repair. After they have their mast down, I get them in a death spiral and keep shooting until there is sufficient damage, and then I board them. You don't really need to win just keep them focused on you till they sink...cause chaos. Also, if their mast is down they are going to try raising it, try aiming your guns to their back and hope you can nock them off.

Yeah your best bet is going solo.

  • I'm assuming this is duo Sloop hourglass. Skill gaps are going to be huge now, most players in hourglass are highly skilled players. I wouldn't give up but I'd definitely practice more in adventure and then drop into hourglass near the end of the session but I'll provide some tips that help me:

    • always turn right when breaching and don't necessarily raise sails to half. The sloop takes the fewest holes on its left side so always try to keep that facing your enemy. You want to get close to the enemy rather than fire from a distance. This will reduce the skill gap on cannon aim hence not raising sails as much. Raise when you get into the spiral with each other.
    • if your mast drops you don't need to panic, first thing to do is adjust your wheel to maintain a spin that keeps your cannon pointing at the enemy to maintain suppression.
    • don't hurry to repair, the sloop takes a long time to fill up, listen for creaking and just bucket, only repair if you have a lot of damage
    • keep blunderbombs on you for ladder guarding
    • aim at cannon line to keep pressure on them, go for chainshots when they aren't on cannons
    • most important thing in hourglass, stay relaxed, you will sink, it doesn't matter, look at where the other crew started to get on top of you and practice avoiding that situation

So for galleon, the first BIG tip is to actually find a crew that is consistent and actually sticks to their roles (Bilge/Helm/Flex/Maincannon)
That by far will make you go a long way in at least winning fights against open crew bots.
Looking up guides for each role and and just general Galleon Hourglass videos goes a LONG way for beginners. I would advise the whole crew watches those videos, and not just one player. (If you are all serious in getting better faster)
Most of us had to learn the hard way back then, but theres a lot of information out now that boosts learning for any new crew.

It start well, but it always end up with one guy repairing, one guy bucketing, one guy on the helm and one guy on canon/ladder which isn’t very effective…

Funnily enough, this is the meta in the highest MMR galleon hourglass crews. (If both crews are equally skilled and shooting a lot of lower deck holes) But it really comes down to micro mechanics such as keeping lower pressure, flex/bilge/MC knowing how to grate bucket and so forth, as well as macro when it comes to decision making.

Finally you can look up twitch sea of thieves players that do galleon hourglass and see how they play.

I can suggest you Mojdlik17 on twitch that plays high MMR gally hourglass who is a very good player and I have played with/against him several times. He also streams mosts days of the week. Simply watch not only what he does, but what the crew does and their callouts.
