Port Merrick is unfinished

  • Has it been officially said that Port Merrick is 'done' and nothing new is going to be added to it? Personally it still feels unfinished and has the same issues as the Original Golden Sands, that being the Back Island is useless.

Like idk why would you walk the bridge from Tavern Island to the 'Lighthouse' Island when its literally empty, there's like 2 Barrels, 2 of the Buildings are locked shut, the Lighthouse isn't even a lighthouse, more just a big signal flare tower. They also put Stairs down to a tiny beach for some reason? There's nothing on the Beach and its weird that there's a staircase down to nothing. That Staircase was one of the first things built early in the Rebuilding so the fact it just went nowhere was really disappointing. I saw those stairs and thought maybe they'll finally have a plan for this Island, but I guess not, they just made sure it kept to the same aesthetic and left it unused still. At the very least they could've made it the actual Lighthouses from the APL Talltales, as in ones where you can really move the Lens to create a beam of Light and cast it on parts of the Outpost or the Sea Rocks around it.

Obviously there's also the issue of no NPCs, which I still believe there is no excuse for. ''It'll strain bad machines'' no it won't lol. MOVING NPCs that follow a walk cycle, sure that might, But I'm at least asking for stationary ones. If you sincerely think adding like 5 Stationary NPCs will be the make or break for if someone can run this game, you need to consider that basically every single update they could make would do the same. The entire concept of Hourglass, Sea Forts, Shrines, etc would just fry someone's bad PC if that was the case. If its really that big a deal then just have the NPCs not show up on Cursed Graphics which is likely what bad machines are running, and obviously you can't be complaining that people may not run it well if they're also opting into higher spec of graphics. You know how many Stationary NPCs are in the Pirate Hideout? 18. Each Outpost has 13 by Default. They very much can add some more Stationary NPCs to the Port to make it feel more lived in. Have a few in the Tavern, some gazing out to Sea, some leaning against the walls watching passers by, some on the Balconies watching down. It just feels so... Empty... more so than all the outposts simply due to how big and full it is compared to the others which are mostly just a small area of buildings on a very large Island mostly unused. The only unused part of the Port is the Back Island, everywhere else is incredibly Dense and to see it completely empty makes it feel like a Ghost Town, like the Reapers won and it was left uninhabitable. You could put reaper fog on the Port, put some Reapers Red banners everywhere and Change the Lanterns to the ones we see at the Hideout and I'm pretty sure it would pass as the ''Reaper Garrison'' we would've gotten otherwise. The other outposts only have buildings for the companies to do their work, there's no regular Inhabitants its only those at work, but Port Merrick has plenty of housing for regular residents, yet they just I guess sit at home never touching grass just like us. The fact that the incredible work done by Rare on the Port makes the port really feel lived in goes completely to waste because they won't just go that last step further to give it some NPCs. Literally just fish some models out of the Emporium and whip up some meh clothing combinations in 2 minutes. You already have the necessary animations too. Mysterious Stranger leaning against a wall, Emporium Intrigue to gaze out at Sea, Generally just sitting down, etc. I really cant imagine it would be super difficult to make this happen.

So normal players can blend in and "sneak" kill players :p Okie.

  • The purose of the tower is the guns.

  • @burnbacon What? Dude, really?

  • If you look around, to me it looks as if there's still signs of work being carried out. I dont think weve seen the last development on the outpost.
And of course this bustling pirate port needs NPC's to bustle. It feels empty at the mo. Lifeless but gorgeous.
All I ask is that if NPC's are added they have a huge sign above their heads that say "I am an NPC" so burnbacon doesnt get confused or paranoid everytime he has to visit.

  • I think that the empty areas of the island are for the ashen chest, ashen key and ritual skull bilge rat voyages

  • It's not finished.....everything in SoT in unfinished imo. But specifically the top tower of the Captain's head is clearly unfinished and half ramshackley built.

  • ALSO ! another cool thing I noticed is that under the tavern there is a fancy looking door that could potentially lead to an area we are yet to have access to.

  • Fix the frame rate drop before anything else. Right now, it's very painful to even spawn into the joint, much less purposefully going there.

The same logic could be applied that Skeleton enemies should not move because players will think its other players. You could also blend in with standing NPCs so that's a mute point.

    @Foambreaker

The purose of the tower is the guns.

Unsure what that means? you mean the cannons? The Not-Lighthouse doesn't have cannons.

All the outposts have that 'unfinished' feel to it but Port Merrick moreso than most actually feels unfinished. I do think they claimed this was the final stage of its evolution so it'll most likely stay this way.

I feel a Nametag above would make them feel even more like Players? And unless you only have a few NPCs than the amount of nametags cluttering the screen would kind of kick you out of it. Like imagine the Pirate Legend tavern all with nametags.

If that were the case all outposts would need an area like this, theres no merit to the idea this is what its for. For now its just a fully built up section of land for no reason. Like before when that island had nothing on it, whatever, its a naturally occuring Island. They built a bridge to it and that's about it, they didn't want to use it. But if they're gonna go out of their way to build up the area and THEN not use it, makes no sense. Could've at least used the Island for Housing or something, or better yet it should've been the Sovereign Island.

Inside the top tower of Captain's Head is the same broken Staircase featured at all taverns. Presumably this is Rare keeping the Staircase in case they ever have plans (or may even already have plans) to use them. In any other tavern they could have the Staircase lead to a second floor, but as the Captains head Staircase leads up to nowhere; the staircase could only ever lead to a portal that teleports you, similar to the Pirate Hideout Waterfall under the tavern.

  • @frogfish12 Hopefully a guild recruitment hall. Play PG rated parlor games to spend extra coins, because we all end up sitting on millions of gold. We can chill in a place similar to the Arena Hall, find like minded people who are also doing what your doing then set off together into the actual servers.

  • It does feel unfinished and empty. I suggested ports a while back and port merrick is almost what I envisioned but I wanted the port to be more active, maybe NPCs putting on live performances like fire juggling etc. at night the port would come alive and many activities would be taking place, and during the day you would see NPCs working like at the docks, the tavern etc.

I like the idea, have it be like an actual commercial hub with all sorts of activities, probably not gonna happen, just like the awesome suggestions of adding dolphins, whales, and more wildlife to liven up the place, adding more NPCs and wildlife entities would put more strain on their hamster powered servers.

I just wish MS were one of those companies that made 71 Bn in PROFIT in 2022 so they could afford the investment... oh wait.
