Cosmetics are your game progression, but they became pay-to-win

  • Mike Chapman said in the Sea of Thieves introduction video that cosmetics are the way to progress in Sea of Thieves and that you have to build your reputation. https://youtu.be/WB9hJNfMa5M 0:00 - 1:20.

A year ago, Captain Falcore made a video about ship skin stereotypes. https://youtu.be/c2WBer_3SYI. I used to be able to judge someone's skill level by looking ate their ship skin, just like Captain Falcore. In the hourglass game mode most people are sailing with the Dark Adventurer sails, paid cosmetics or something from Twitch drops. Which is a clear indication that the default cosmetics are lacking. The core of the game is lacking.

Nowadays most new cosmetics are available in the pirate emporium. You'll have to pay to progress. Which makes the game a new form of pay-to-win. You don't have to build your reputation to own unique cosmetics. You can just pull out your wallet. This suits short term players as they won't have to invest time in this game. As soon as they bought the cosmetics they have, they can stop playing, because other cosmetics are disproportionally hard to acquire (to their eyes). This approach doesn't appeal to long term players because there is nothing to progress to.

Should this game go free-to-play and focus more on short term players with wallets? Or should Rare take a look at the core gameplay and focus more on that?

  • The game is the same as ever, pirates equip whatever cosmetics they want. And Falkore's stereotype video is not a rule, but more like a general perception.

The pirate emporium cosmetics never indicated any kind of progression. When grinding for a curse and if we would see someone with pirate emporium ship, I would instantly know that most likely we will win this one. It gives no 'reputation' in no ones eyes. A default ship is a lot more scary than any emporium ship.

I just find your whole assessment of the game so confusing and conflicting.

You play the game to play the game. And you do that, because you enjoy it, cosmetics you buy and unlock tell the story and you can wear whatever you want. The badest pirate on the seas can wear the Kraken outfit, nobody stops him.

I have unlocked everything I wanted to unlock and purchased everything I wanted to purchase. I usually end up spending my money on something random I won't even use and just create new goals along the way.

  • Yea I have to agree with @ZiG-ZaG-LTU. Feel free to make any assumptions and stereotypes you wish, but I like running around with my scrapper vest (no prerequisites to purchase), executive admiral trousers (no prerequisites to purchase), and my umbra tattoo set (got to go find a bunch of things to read to buy this) because I like the way it looks. I've got nearly 2000 hours in game, both PvP curses, am maxed out in all the trading companies, and simply enjoy playing the game.

If you want to underestimate someone based on what some internet talking head says about the way they like their pirate to look, feel free. That doesn't make it pay to win. That makes no sense at all.

Fortnite is essentially the same business model—just because you pay real world money to make your avatar look "cooler" to you won't make you good at the game.

Someone has to pay the bills, and those Disney IP licenses wouldn't be free.
If you want more content, Rare has to raise money. With a game of this age, given you're not required to pay for anything past the base game, I wouldn't be surprised at all if almost every new addition to the game was emporium based.

What we may want from the game, and what makes a good financial decision from Rares' angle, might look very different.

  • If the servers had more people, then it would become Sea of boats ;)

  • @dwinges Have you considered Falcpre is wrong? And cosmetics have never been a measure of progression?

They can tell.ypu how long someone has been around for a handful of cosmetics BUT you should just wear what you like.

Those are Mike Chapmans' words. Watch that first video.

  • As long as others are free to wear what they want, as long as I am free to wear what I want

as long as they continue to add cosmetics into the game (in a variety of ways) to serve more people's preferences

    I don't have a problem with it.

  • @dwinges And the second part of what he wrote that you did not quote, explains it.

You start with underwear and finish with whatever you want to wear. Cosmetics you purchase and unlock, including peglegs, hooks, eyepatches, beards, hair, tattoos tell a story to pirates of what you have been through. Pirate emporium only tells you been through your wallet.

  • @dwinges right so I get where you coming from part of the reason to go out and collect loot is to earn faction levels and unlock cool cosmetics but remember the release extra content for free all of this game content has been for free from new story quests to factions to the Brig not to mention that their season pass has almost all of the stuff on its free track with what 10 items on the paid maybe 15 and they’ve released huge updates like Pirates Life,Tall Tales, and Return to Monkey Island for free so a shop with themed cosmetics that aren’t over what $20-$25 IF you want to spend money on a game where they add a lot for free I don’t see the problem it’s not like they stopped adding earnable cosmetics iv been playing since the Alpha I assure you they’ve added a ton of stuff for free and if you ran out of stuff to earn take a break play some other games and come back when there’s more to do it’s what my crew and I do

  • I'm just saying they've lost sight of their original gameplay design. Which gives seasoned players less incentive to keep playing. It makes them more dependent on new players with huge wallets instead of keeping their current player base busy.

seasoned players in social spaces which is not as much overall activity as people often gauge it as

they lose minimal activity over the stuff that people in social spaces get frustrated about. The status stuff really doesn't keep the game going as much as social spaces and even Rare often focus on it.

Quality of life within the session, compatible crews, balanced risk/reward to where the experience isn't miserable. These are what the majority care about, these are what drive longevity and activity. They started seriously addressing these things and activity went up, not just with new players and new players are getting more invested in the environment currently.

Season 7 lost a lot of long term activity, not over cosmetics but because QoL was low. Risk/reward stunk in the organic environment and they implemented a new system while getting rid of overview stats which lowered qol even more for long term contributors. People care about their stories and they want to feel confident in opportunity. Cosmetics as status is largely just a social space thing and the social space has never carried adventure activity on these servers. People are regularly bringing in cosmetics from all sorts of different things/activities, that's the qol part of cosmetics, more selection over time.

  • The game hasn't been like that for a long time. Ever since the emporium opened up, which was supposed to be for easter egg cosmetics btw, it has completely made cosmetics useless. Yes, cosmetics used to show someone's reputation and experience with the game, but that's no longer thee case. You use what you want, who u want to now, rep or experience has nothing to do with it, and the progression mechanic in this game really doesn't matter as much as it used to. Now a days, what matters is that with rep gain, you get to propose better voyages. With emissary, you get more gold per voyage. And with captaincy, you get a faster way to get said gold from selling, when you complete said voyage. Otherwise, rep importance tied to cosmetics depends on how much you want those extra cosmetic unlocks from increasing reputation.

For me personally, I analyze player experience and rep based on how they play. Which direction they go while sailing, how they fight, how many cannon shots they miss, if they wear any really expensive Athena cosmetics, etc...

  • That is not what pay to win means my man. Pay to win means you pay money for an advantage that others dont have, or to get something that you have to otherwise work for. Considering you cant buy normal cosmetics that you have to work for, there is nothing p2w about this.

  • You don’t “win” by having cosmetics. Emporium stuff doesn’t put you at a significant advantage over other players. You just have the ability to look better (and that’s a matter of opinion, many people consider emporium sets ugly)

  • There is a BIG difference between Earned Cosmetics and Emporium ones.

More often than not if you see a $20 ship set, or one of the free GamePass/Xbox ones you know they are going to be new players.

See a Ship with the Good Boy, Stone Vault, or Ghostly Unicorn sails you now they have put some time into the game.

Yes the Dark Adventurer set is on a lot of ships, but even then you can tell from those that "Oh they spent 8 Million Gold on those sails."

The core of Sea of Thieves is not cosmetics gain. It is just enjoying the game. If you want to show off what you have done? you can do that. If you want to show off that you spent 40+ On a ship set, weapons and costume? you can do that. But truthfully: The game is about making your avatar, dressing them the way that you feel best represents you, and have fun.

  • Isn't it relatively easy to ID which cosmetics are earned vs. which are bought?
