Reputation change to aid health of pve/pvp

  • Sea of thieves has a mesmerising world full of challenge and wonder to explore for all no matter how you play, it’s a playground to feel like a pirate, merchant, hunter or even a bone crushing skeleton skull collector.

It’s so sad to see the state of things right now in regard to the pve vs pvp divide, just constant arguing. I see both sides of the coin, on one side you have people who enjoy being a pirate that wants to be a lead slinging warlord of the seas and those who want to be a treasure hunting extraordinaire slaying skeletons and sirens and claiming their coveted treasures AND THATS OK! It’s a game, a pirate playground to be and do as you wish. Your pirate, your story, your choice.

These intersect when one party puts in the effort to obtain the loot and those who put in the effort to steal it, it’s the way of things and it happens.

I enjoy doing both, it’s just how I’m feeling on the day, maim or mend but my issue arises when you lose not your gold (there’s plenty more to claim) but your rep, your time. It’s one thing to lose the gold but when the gold goes so does your progress. It’s a gut punch that puts players off playing due to the fear of wasting time only to be sent to Davey jones locker with no trace of achievement.

Therefore I would think it’d be a warranted change to award reputation upon obtaining loot and it hitting the deck of your ship similar to an emissary levelling up upon doing the same action. To supplement this change there should be a reputation gain upon completing voyages.

For example I could have a gold hoarders voyage and I gain we’ll say 4 chests, putting the loot on the ship I gain the rep of those chests immediately without needing to sell (rep value will depend on rarity) and upon completion of said voyage I gain the rep of the 4 chests I procured plus 50% (just chucking number out) regardless whether I was raided by another crew and still hold the loot upon completion. If I am fated to be sunk by the pvp crowd and they steal my loot the same rep system applies minus the voyage bonus.

OH NO I LOST MY GOLD! Oh well maybe next time we come out on top and sell but at least you got your rep, your progress obtained and your time valued. In this system we can lean into the plundering of others gold and not their time. Gold is plentiful and should be fought for but the players time should be valued and respected. Unlike gold we can’t just get more time.

I hope I explained it well and it’ll be interesting to see what you all think. Cheers :)

  • In short
You want to still gain rep regardless if you turn in anything. Sorta an insurance against pvp.

    Sorry, no.
If you cant defend yourself or make it on time to sell any loot you find, you dont deserve to rank up and become PL
or even lvl up Athena if you still wanna follow your explanation. (Drop Loot on ship with emissary and still earn Rep)
Achievements are rewarded to those who actually accomplish something, not for trying. We all fail something and its a learning experience

  • It's not your loot until you sell it is a good mentality to get into

  • @burnbacon I understand but it’s a game, a fun past time to turn on and adventure, not grind and temper yourself like it’s an actual fight to the death, there are plenty of commendations and plenty of other ways to prove yourself above the pack and stand out as a true legend, not all can afford to put that high a level commitment and time into becoming a dread lord, especially with some of the highly skilled and down right impressive players on the seas that you come across, Pl is the first stepping stone into unlocking the full potential of a player and their possibilities on the sea, a level is a number not a display of one’s skill, high level in cod doesn’t mean undefeated it means time committed. Of course this is a rough idea and is subject to not apply to end game factions to maintain their name and notoriety as the top dogs and avoid undermining titles made in said factions like Athena’s. This system is more to aid those in reaching Pl and then fighting to be the best. Thank you for your input my friend :)

  • @hiradc I agree which is why the loot should be the gold and not progression of the raided party. You’re a pirate stealing gold, you steal it and it’s yours. Spend their gold not their will to go on unrewarded for the time they spent. The will to improve will be there when you know that you’re fighting for treasure and you want to buy the ever increasing catalogue of customisation items. Thank you for replying :)

  • Safer seas are almost here my guy.
Snarky comments aside, it is the challenge that makes achievements in PvPvE games have weight to them.

Without the challenge its all hollow.

  • Just think of it from a logical standpoint point. You gain reputation because you complete a job for these companies right. So why would your reputation improve if you keep failing to deliver your end of the contract? Logically your reputation with the company should decrease for never fulfilling your contracts. Granted it doesn't because it's a game but imagine if it did, I think it would be fun.

In summary, no you do not deserve reputation for just collecting the loot. You only should get it for turning it in because otherwise clearly you're not a reputable enough pirate to hold onto your cargo long enough to complete your contracts and gain reputation.

Personally think safer seas is a big mistake too but whatever that ship has sailed.

  • The idea of reducing the gut punch of being sunk and losing out on reputation and gold is solid.

Exactly how to go about doing that is the tricky part.

It’s at least reassuring to know that there are other players out there that do have empathy for others and are thinking about how to make the game less harsh on those who end up being sunk by other players.

  • Rep is really easy to max. I don't think this needs to be fixed.
