Possessed Megalodons: A Game Changer

  • Greetings Pirates

Now after the hard work Rare did on The Monkey Island tall tales and Season 10 has been released, I think it's time for a game changer in 2024.

This shouldn't be impossible because half the work has been done already, plus most of the game assets can be reused to create this:

(All stats and features are subject to change)

A rumble was heard from The Shrine Of Hungering. Upon investigation, a new hidden room was discovered. It is accessed by a bubble door like the treasuries. This new room contains an Altar and Coral Throne.

In the middle of the Altar, you can place an Artifact Of Legendary Hunger. The Athena Veil voyage should be changed to guarantee 2-3 artifacts at the final fort. You can also now buy 1 Artifact Stash Voyage from The Mysterious Stranger for 50 Doubloons. Works the same way the Ashen Key Stash Voyage does. Except it can only be bought once a day.

When the Artifact is placed on the Altar it cannot be removed. Cool animations happen and the Throne starts glowing. When you take a seat, you will still be able to hear when someone else opens the bubble door to come kill you. If you get downed in this room, you will respawn back at your ship. Once seated, 1 of the 4 Meg variants will rise from the depths and surface above the shrine.

Your POV is now from the Meg. YOU are in control! The meg will automatically swim forward at its slower speed and your sprint key will increase its speed. I assume diving and rising slightly deeper/shallower will be too difficult to code, so keep standard Meg depth.

    • Possessed Megs cannot enter the Red Sea.
    • Cannot come very close to Outposts, the Veil Voyage Main Fort Tornado area of effect barrier can be reused here maybe? This is a safe area for ships to escape to.

    • Health of Meg between usual Brig and Galleon scaled Megs?
    • The turn radius of Meg be sharper than Sloop but should feel like you're steering a big shark.
    • Can switch your POV to see yourself like when sitting down at the docks.
    • Left Click to chomp(Area of effect attack) will one-shot players in the water. This is a small bite with like 5 seconds cooldown.

    • Hold Right Click to activate the Meg charge attack towards a ship. Will auto-lock onto the nearest enemy ship and you can only steer minimally while charging. This attack should have a shorter cooldown than normal megs and also cannot be interrupted by cannonballs.
    • Your possessed meg will automatically swallow any floating treasure you swim through. You can collect infinite amounts of treasure, when the meg dies, it will all float to the surface.
    • Cannot attack Ghost Ships, but Skeleton ships are very yummy. You can also chomp rowboats easily.
    • Not sure if you should be allowed to heal your meg at Shrine Of Hungering, might be too OP.
    • Skilled players only attacking from behind or front isn't OP because Kegs, Disney Sticks and Guns exist. Maybe make blunderbombs do more damage than usual to Possessed Megs?

    • Your Meg might not have a map but can sense a beacon across the map above the Shrine Of Hungering.
    • Not sure if it should be able to sense other ships or just spot them visually far away, might be hard to see so close to the waves.

    • There can only be 1 Possessed Meg per server. When server merge happens, it will only merge with servers that have inactive Altar.
    • If you disconnect while controlling the meg, it will continue swimming forward until you return within a few minutes. If you do not return, the Meg will dive and disappear visually. The Altar stays active. When you or someone else takes a seat on the throne, the Meg will resurface at the spot it dived, with all the treasure still in its belly.

    • Only when the Meg dies or you relinquish control over it, will the Artifact on the Altar break.
    • Will this cause server lag? Doubt it. It's not another ship that needs to calculate collisions with waves or players onboard. The only lag it might cause is when it dies and the server has to spawn a bunch of treasure it had listed in its belly.

    • How do you get the treasure if you're solo and done hunting with the Meg? Only above the Shrine Of Hungering, you can relinquish control over the Meg. It will then return to its AI movement. But this Meg will never despawn and always circle above the Shrine. Go get your ship and shoot your personal loot piñata!

Just think of all the cool/fun moments and new strategies that will be born from this.

    • You think you're safe by sailing into the wind with your treasure-laden sloop? Jaws Theme Music The brig that was chasing you are now being pulled by a Possessed Megalodon and you are about to have a BAD time.

    • Solo players can vacuum up all floating loot randomly found on the seas and munch on Skeleton Fleets, just hope others aren't swimming down to your altar room...

    • Will you leave your ship unguarded when visiting islands? Are you sure?
    • Instead of going "Ugh another Meg" whenever they hear the Meg music, pirates will now scramble to check if this Meg variant is from the right region, and if it's swimming suspiciously.

    • A bunch of new commendations can be added, like biting another Meg or Kraken etc.
    • The FOTD area might become more chaotic.
    • Your least pvp skilled crewmate can guard your ship and assist in naval combat safely, from far away. This will help old and new crews.
    • Sailing time can be reduced between islands, even against the wind. Harpoon and go!

Thank you for reading through the entire suggestion, feel free to give your thoughts!

    PS: Rare, please? I beg.

  • even if this would be a matter of "half the work is already done"
if you ask me this isn't what the game needs right now - like I am sure it would be a fun time controlling your own meg
but its not sea of thieves, it's such a big break with the gameplay we are used to
back in the day there were many people wishing for drinkable breath of the sea turning you into a mermaid: if that had been added I'd have said sure why not have us turn into megs too, there would have been precedent for such things being possible to be added
but in todays sea of thieves? it just doesn't fit
and they way you've described it I really only see two ways this could go: either this would become the meta for farming loot or it would end like the SoSS where everyone played it for 1 week, got their commendations done and that was kinda just it
like how do you balance something radical like this? how do you make the content engaging?
most content can be enjoyed with the entire crew, how do we make sure that 3/4 crew members don't just feel left out here?
they talked in the podcast about their choice not to make any changes to the kraken or to freshen it up and like I just think that the emergent encounters are done, they're good as they are, they don't need changes, they don't need anything new
like I'm sorry but I just don't see it

P.S: this also wouldn't really fit in with the plan we've heard for 2024. we know S11 is another fundamental thing like captaincy or guilds. we know Flameheart will return & we know that future seasons' content will tie in more with story stuff, so unless we can connect possessed megs with the return of Flameheart and resolving the unresolved story threads from the adventures then its off the table too sadly.

All of this. Plus, imagine a Guild getting onto the same server; Now you have both the Possessed Meg and ships working with it, trying to sink other players.

Also; if Outposts are 'safe zones'; What is to stop players from staying in the safe zone while firing at the Possessed Meg?
People under attack will simply beeline to the nearest Outpost to get safe.

How would you ever kill it?
Players who run low on HP would simply swim away, then swim back to the Throne, then release the Meg & kill it themselves.

Also; What's to stop a crew from taking control of the Meg, letting their friends kill it, and taking all its loot with 0 risk?

  • dude i love the effort u put into this. but no. pls not.
