Just got back into the game after being gone for years, what's the point of player buried treasure? I don't get it, am i missing something?
What's the point of player buried treasure?

@wolfmanbush i tried one and dug up fireworks, its pointless
get involved in win condition scenarios
athenas/cofs/fotd etc etc
I don't even pirate hunt and I don't often care about loot and I'm involved in some hunting/hiding scenarios fairly often
Super exciting to find something or pull off a good hide vs other crews

Crate of fireworks? Heck yeah!
Could have been an ammo crate. At least the FW crate is 1k + Merchant rep.
Back before another level cap increase I was burying entire sessions for giggles.
Sometimes it's Glory...
Originally it was supposed to be a way for players to create basically custom voyages for others or to hide stuff to return to, with a little risk that people can steal the maps. But after people discovered that any quests posted by players are specific to the server posted on, and they vanish when servers restart, its only used to hide stuff.

There ar commendations linked to it.
It can be useful when you're with treasure on an island and your ship is not close by. Bury the skull(s), chest(s) and you can dig them up when you pass the island again without them despawning of taken by other crews.
The map boards aren't a greatly used feature outside of commendations..burying treasure has its uses for hiding from players when contested, also things like stacking fotd burying the reaper bounties/chests ensure more spawn where usually once the server limit is reached they start changing to ancient bone dust.
Ahoy there!
Player Buried Treasure is a unique way for Pirates to leave behind treasure on any island of their choosing, and then submit their maps to Quest Boards available at any outpost or port, which then becomes available for any pirate on the Sea of Thieves to obtain and discover! Players have been using Buried Treasure in a multitude of ways, from what I just explained, to hiding treasure on islands from other pirates you could be engaged in combat with! One downside to this however is once you bury treasure somewhere, a "Map Bundle" will appear on your ship at the top of your Quest Table, which is an item other pirates can steal from you, either straight from the table, or if you are unfortunately sunk, and then find out where your buried items are hiding.
Furthermore, with Buried Treasure comes a whole assortment of commendations you can unlock located in "Pirates Log - Reputation - Bilge Rats - Buried Treasures"
Hope I was able to help you out, and Welcome back to the Seas! Happy Sailing!
