Sea of Thieves' PlayStation Pre-order item exclusivity.

  • (As an Edit: This is about the pre-order items being locked to the PlayStation console even if those PlayStation players move over or also play to pc, not that PlayStation has exclusive items that can only be earned on the platform.)

Recently I learned that the pre-order bonuses and 'beta test' rewards will be locked to PS5 only, meaning they cannot be used/worn despite being earned unless on PS5 and I must ask if true, why.
If there was a desire for exclusive cosmetics that are are strictly locked to a platform, then perhaps a PlayStation themed ship set is in order similarly to the Xbox' Duke ship set, however I do not think pre-order and beta items should be locked to the console.
Many players Including myself likely purchased the PS5 edition despite also having it on other platforms. I myself own it on an old generation Xbox, PC, and was excited to also have it on PlayStation. I specifically wanted it as an alternative to the old gen Xbox with the beta player items and such just being a plus, a reward for showing support. Learning that the items would now possibly only be usable when playing on PlayStation is annoying to say the least.

It is just a disappointing play on both parties for this, as someone who loves the game and was excited to see new PS5 players around on the servers, It more sad to learn that they may be able to Isolate themselves to just PS5 only servers rather than having a wider "console only" option on top of the fact that the cosmetics I'm paying for are not allowed to be used anywhere else. Its nearly frustrating enough to forgo my pre-order entirely as the Items from the support I wanted to give would be only partially available however I do not plan on refunding as I have an actual reason for the purchase more than just the items given, I intend to play on the platform version itself.

I've supported this game with my time and money for years now, I still wish to do so as this is one of the few games I do actually enjoy thoroughly both for the gameplay itself as well as more importantly the story, but pushing out things like this and telling me that the items I get FOR that support are not going to be allowed to be used on anything else aside what I specifically got them on is even more frustrating when it comes to special situations and events like this.

It begs the question as to why even have cross-progression entirely when it comes to PlayStation if some of the items you'd get wont transfer to and from? There will be situations where players may transfer from Xbox over to PlayStation, vice versa, or from PlayStation to Pc down the line. How should they feel knowing that not all of the items they paid money for would come with them?
I understand why cross-progression is there, I'm asking this solely in the light of not being able to even keep all the items you have earned/purchased. Although this is a small collection of items in this instance, it holds more weight as they are pre-order and beta bonuses that aim in the interest of both new and old players alike.

Again, I love this game and have continued to support it with both my time and money for years but being told that the items I'd be getting for showing that support will only be partially useable is just a shame.

Items like this, Beta and pre-order items specifically, I really do not think should ever be locked to the console especially when players will want them as a show of support.
It opens the door to other questions as to what will and will not be allowed on PS5 when coming from other platforms.

    • Will players who own the duke set not be allowed to use it on PS5 despite owning it already?
    • Will players who own the ferryman set not be allowed to use it on PS5 considering you had to buy and Xbox controller outside of the game to get it, therefore making it an Xbox specific item?
    • Will the black dog sea set be unusable on PS5 considering it was a pre-order exclusive for Xbox/pc?
    • will pc and Xbox get their own isolated servers similarly to PlayStation?
Personally I think Isolated exclusive servers really ruin the whole "sailing together" ideal but for a cross progression game, some of these questions should not need to be asked, it should be expected that most if not all items unless limited time should be transferable between platforms.

To end this whole thing off I want to make it clear that I do not make this post out of some cry that "why isn't Xbox/pc getting these exact same cosmetics!?" I make it to question why, after you actually purchase them on the console, partake in the beta tests, and play the game on the PlayStation platform, do you not get the possibility to take the items anywhere else when players may eventually move or play on another platform.
If they want to implement exclusivity within items that are specifically console themed, like the Xbox' Duke set specifically then fine, but it does not make sense and should not be implemented for any support/beta items.

  • The fact that the game exists on XBox, Windows Store and Steam and this type of restriction only came into place when Sony becomes a platform, along with that companies' history with weird crossplay shenanigans, would seem to indicate that it's some requirement coming from Sony and not Rare/Microsoft.

Edit: Seems like the XBox Duke ship set is not usable on PS5 based on the FAQ:

Only cosmetics and items obtained through platform-exclusive offers may not be fully equippable across different devices. For instance, the Duke ship cosmetics linked to the Xbox Series X|S launch won't be usable on PS5. Similarly, items like the Ruby Viper cosmetics or Dauntless Adventurer Closed Beta rewards, exclusive to PlayStation pre-order campaigns, won't be equippable on Xbox or Steam.

    Basically, blame Sony.

  • Likely so, I understand PlayStation is notorious for exclusive content in many area within games coming over, However I just don't agree with what specifically is being blocked here.
A new PlayStation themed ship set like how Xbox series X/S have the Duke themed one would of been perfectly fine but players new and old alike were aimed at with the pre-order bonuses and items. Players who do pre-order and play through the PS5 beta should be allowed to take those specific items to other areas as a show of their support for the game rather than be restricted and locked away from them when they are on other platforms.

Edit: Sounds about right, That I still would of preferred mirrored with an exclusive PlayStation ship set over just blocking the usage of all pre-order and beta items outright, but I understand your point.

  • pre-order bonuses and 'beta test' rewards will be locked to PS5 only, meaning they cannot be used/worn despite being earned unless on PS5 and I must ask if true, why.

I swear. Players today don’t understand what bonuses or pre orders content means.

Us D1 players got out dues. Steam pc players got there’s and Xbox got another.
I don’t see any of those coming back. So why shouldn’t Sony have their own.

Helps figure out what system players play on :)

  • It feels like just the start. Maybe they'll be getting PS5 emporium only ship sets/costumes soon 🤷🏻

  • @burnbacon I feel you've misunderstood what I'm actually talking about entirely and are deciding to just try and brush it off by saying that "Players today don't understand what bonuses and pre-order content means".
I am fully aware of what bonuses and pre-order items are and what they are commonly used for.

The day 1 players of both Xbox and PC "got their dues" as you say, and you can take those "dues" along with you to both of those platform types. If you played during the PC's alpha and beta releases where you acquired the unique items as well as the day 1 patch on its actual release, you can take those items WITH you if you were to transition or play on an Xbox Console. This same ideal follows in the opposing direction where if you earned exclusive items on Xbox that were originally deemed to be specifically FOR Xbox, you can take those with you if you migrated over to a PC account.

I'm not sure why you even brought up the fact that those original day 1 items wont be coming back as I've not mentioned them at all. Do I have those special beta and day 1 items myself? No and nor do I want them. Those cosmetics are special to those pirates specifically and show that they supported the game at its very early stages and they deserve to have those exclusive cosmetics.
They also deserve to be able to USE those aforementioned cosmetics on whatever platform they currently play on, especially when the game is heavily marketed as being cross-progression and is cosmetic focused.

To try and make everything I said as simplified as possible, allow me to explain it like this.
The Issue I have and the primary reason for the entire post Is NOT because I have some unjustified anger that "how dare PlayStation players be rewarded special items for pre-ordering and playing Day 1 without those items being offered to everyone!" but instead because those pre-order cosmetics and day 1 items WONT be transferrable between the accounts of the pirates that have them, unlike the other ones which are.

Not every PlayStation player will remain on PlayStation nor will every PC player always play on PC and those players who decide to go ahead and buy the game, especially in this specific case where players are heavily incentivized to pre-order with the promise of special rewards, should not then be suddenly locked out of those incentivized cosmetics as soon as they decide to play on another platform.
It does not matter if its their second purchase on a second system or if its first time pirates who want to experience the game. Promising people rewards for partaking in special events or for pre-ordering the game then suddenly telling them that they can never use those rewards they earned anywhere else would be a slap in the face to anyone.

  • @ryannewbz I truly hope not. If that were to be the case I fear all it would end up doing is twist the arm of PlayStation players and convince them to never move over to PC or Xbox even if they wanted to because the items they paid money for would be gone, specifically in the case of Sea of Thieves.
It could also cause issues on the other side, Players that want to play on Console and move from PC may choose Xbox over PlayStation as they currently have no locked cosmetics. I personally play on both console and PC and would rather not have cosmetics locked just because of what I'm playing on, especially if I paid for them.

Exclusivity in my opinion is just a bad practice and is usually annoying for nearly everyone involved, I'll never understand why it ends up being supported.

  • Stop supporting a fomo model Company, thats It. You spent hundreds of euros/dollars for some pixels u are even limited to use.

  • @il-truth-li Although I agree entirely about not supporting FOMO models and companies that use such practices, the fear of missing out model isn't exactly what I'm talking about here, at least not to its full extent.
I'm not really fearful of missing out on these items, I'm buying the game (for the 3rd time.) on PlayStation because it is a console alternative over my old generation Xbox one where I first purchased it back in 2018. I also got it on PC when I got one around 2021.
I've not spend much on the game, Over the last 5-6 years I've only spent maybe $250 total. Only around $42 per year.

My main and sole issue, as well as the reason for this whole post, Is from the fact that I wont be able to use those items on PC where I also play. I'm going ahead with the purchase because I'd rather have it on a newer generation PS5 than try to continue playing it on an older generation Xbox One.
If I did not own a PlayStation at all then I really would not care, I don't mind exclusives that are only attainable on specific platforms. Its only in moments where items, either preorder or not, in a cross-progression game are not useable anywhere else aside that one specific platform, despite it being cross-progression.

I'll reiterate again so its more easily understandable.
I'm not scared or fearful of missing out on these items, I'm annoyed that the players who purchase it and actually play on the PlayStation platform, will not be able to use those items anywhere else aside that specific platform, at least if they ever moved over to pc.

At the end of the day I purchased it for the game itself not the cosmetics, I just find this specific issue that involve the cosmetics rather annoying.

  • Unfortunately this is a thing in the gaming world and SoT isn’t the only game where companies have to strip cosmetics from the platform on crossplay games.

It definitely stinks and since it only impacts a small portion of players, I don’t think they care much. I also split my time between multiple platforms. Originally it was Xbox and PC, but when they released EAC I uninstalled it from my PC and bought it for PS5 as I also have that console. I use cloud gaming as well. So it stinks a lot that the cosmetics I can use when on my PS, I can’t use anywhere else. And I suspect these 2 sets won’t be the last of the exclusions. I suspect there might be paid ones or perks ones that will come in the future and also be excluded and that just stinks.

  • @void-bunnny

The problem here Is you supported a Company that doesnt really care.

  • Sony are quite old-school when it comes to the world of consoles. They still see exclusives as necessary to keep their console ahead of the competition. It's more common these days for gamers to support multiple platforms - apart from the diehard fanboys who are just as irrelevant and annoying as exclusivity, in this day and age.

The choice of exclusive items is a weird one though. You could understand it for a ship set based on a Sony IP or console identity, but not so much for a recolour of existing items.

  • Bro I have been asking in this forum to give us new Colors for the Vanguard Sails (because it is only white one in the TIME WHEN SAILS WERE ONLY WHITE!) new they are giving a Red and Black one (veeery beautiful one) and we from xbox can`t get a chance to own it because RARE are making only for Playstation (??) why??you are not giving players a chance only that FOMO
