New War Chest Commendations need a SERIOUS REBALANCE

  • It seems like some of you are so concerned with finishing the commendations quickly that it becomes a contest between you and any other player. Your own crew become obstacles in your pursuit to finish these faster than anyone else. That isn't the best mentality to have.

    My friend and I both needed to kill an ashen lord with a pistol and we knew only one of us would get it. It became a friendly rivalry of who would get the final shot in, but neither of us were really concerned with getting it ourselves at that moment. We both knew there would be many more ashen lords, especially with the cof being back at the fof.

    If you are really that motivated to do some of these grindy commendations quickly, center your voyage around these activities so all of your crew can work on them together. You may still only get credit for what you as an individual do, but working collectively will speed up the process and you shouldn't feel hindered by not getting every kill or every shot.

    Sail to shark fin camp for bonecallers, then hit both the shrine of hungering and the seafort east of that to work on several commendations at once.
    Load up on ammo and dive to a ship battle, then repeat while switching who is on cannon.

    Work together and be happy for your crew as well as yourself when a shark appears and someone gets one more kill, or when you dig an ashen chest that spawns ashen skeletons and your crewmate throws out a bonecaller to protect you and earn some credit.

    These weapons are permanent additions to the sandbox that will be here for the rest of the life of the game. They are meant to enrich every moment to moment task by providing new and varying choices on tactics. There will always be more sharks, more gold skellies, more world events and emergent encounters giving every player many opportunities to get credit towards these commendations. Take the opportunity when you can and don't get sour if you miss it sometimes, you'll get more chances.

    These are the worst examples possible. Killing ONE ashen lord with a specific weapon is not a grind. Killing 250 of one of the uncommon enemies in the game with a specific weapon is a whole other story. I don’t know if you are a sot completionist, but these new requirements are similar to the first captaincy update, that needed a MASSIVE rebalance.

    These aren’t objective with organic growth, but numbers out of scale

    One ashen lord per event, but literally endless ashen skeletons while the lord is alive.
    One meg but many hits or as long you have ammo to shoot. Also increased shark spawn while the meg is active.
    One skeleton fort or sea fort has numerous targets with numerous waves.

    I'm not saying they are all balanced to be an equal journey to obtain though, even if you exclude the one time commendations. Killing skellies, and phantoms adds up quick when there are tons in the right places. Knowing where to look to find these targets and using the right tools will significantly speed up your progress.
    I wouldn't suggest grinding the shrine of hungering but add it into your voyage anytime you are near it and shark kills will raise.
    Stop to search any inactive fort you sail by to search for bonecallers. Actually do the green tornado when you know you have a bunch of scattershot to use.
    Keep these weapons and commendations in the back of your head and think of them each time you see the chance to work on them. Let them help give you direction on where your voyage will take you.
    If you haven't had a reason to do a regular skeleton fort in a long time, maybe do one now while you search for bonecallers. If you have ignored the last few megs that appeared, at least shoot at them a few times next time one appears before you leave them behind.

    I don't see grade 5 commendation as a race, I see it as a journey. I'm not competing for first against my crew. I'm watching these commendations influence our playstyle from time to time as we naturally sail giving us mini objectives to add into our voyages until we have finished them. Literally any commendation in the game can and likely has caused us to make decisions on what we do when the opportunity has appeared.

  • It hasn't been a week yet. We still have the whole season to do these commendations, and all to time after that too. If you could complete them all in a few days, then what is the point in playing 2 or 10 weeks from now. Although that said I do think its wild to have to complete all of them just for 2 weapon skins.

    It's nice that YOU dont see the commendations as a race but some people do and thats what brings them fun in the game. But imagine a part of the game that you particularly enjoy gets changed in a bad way in an update and then you come to the forum writing feedback on it and someone replies saying its not an issue and you are actually the issue for enjoying the wrong aspects of the game in the first place.

    How would you feel?

    It's nice that for you the 250 sharks or 250 kegskeletons arent an issue and you see it "as a journey". But if you put it into perspective of similar commendations of the past, these new commendations are completely unbalanced.

    And it's nice that you're trying to explain the game to the other people here "plan your sandbox adventure ahead to work on all the possible rewards as efficiently as possible" but thats nothing new and tips like that dont help people with understanding the developers idea behind putting a 0 behind the 25 on some of the comms in the new category.

    You come across as extremely ignorant to other peoples issues. And you add insult to injury by giving absolutely obvious advises.

    These new commendations are completely unbalanced. Some numbers:

    Horn of fair winds requires 250 for rank V. Compareable commendation would be the breath of the sea commendation which requires 30.
    Kill 250 sharks with the double barreled flintlock. Compareable commendation would be the cherished trinket sharks killed milestone with 5 per milestone 150 for the cherished
    trinket.
    Bonecaller has 4 uses: 250 into skelly ships, 50 into ashen skellys, 50 into phantoms and 1 skelly captain. Compareable commendations would be the cursed iron commendation where you have to kill 200 skellies affected by a greencursed cannonball. Given you can kill a lot of skellys at the same time with just 1 green cursed ball, lets assume 4 per cursed ball is reasonable. Which makes the bonecaller commendation 7 times as hard.

    These commendations feel like there was no thought put into balancing them with the other content. They are absurdly disproportionally harder than past commendations. I think this feedback is important and needs to be heard.

    The issue is, that if the commendations has too many "0" at the end, you cant plan your adventure to knock out as mutch progress as possible for them, but you have to built your whole adventure focused on the commendation in the first place; if you are the type of person that derives pleasure from doing commendations (fast).

    In my understanding the idea behind the commendations is to make the new players familiar with the new sandboxtools. But by having too big numbers in the commendations it feels more like work than a playful encouragement to try everything out.

    Who are you to judge what kind of approach to the game is good or bad? Thats an extremely arrogant take. All approaches to a sandboxgame are equally valid as long as it isnt based around ruining the experience for other players in a toxic way.

  • imo there are always going to be "achievement hunters" in gaming.

    as long as you look at commendations like achievements, some of those people may find them too involved.

    the fact is though, commendations are supposed to be lifetime SoT milestones, not quick completions.

    if some people enjoy clearing commendations as a "playstyle" that's their choice, not the intended design of commendations.

    it took me i think 3 years to hit pirate legend from day1 launch...
    i missed out on the og legend curse... but i don't complain...

    i just know that's my pirates' story.

    and not every pirates' story is the same in Sea of Thieves.

  • @fox-gr The biggest one for me is walking loot across a harpoon line 500 times, especially given we can just grab the loot with the harpoon. I really hate the long grind commendations, because they cause people to lose interest. I remember back in the day, commendations used to be doing one specific thing, such as gunpowder plot which was "Destroy 5 Skeletons at the same time by Shooting a Gunpowder Skeleton on an active Fort; while at least 1 other crew is on the Island at the same time." you did this one time and got it done, and it was fun because it was a challenge. The game should make these monthly update commendations doable in the season span of 3 months for most players, and not just the ones who live on the game.

  • @o37gekko I think the main problem here is that the bilge rat commendations were always quick things to do for people who went out of their way, and they were meant to be completed in the update window to get people familiar with the new content, and get the new rewards. If you look at the other tabs under bilge rats, you will see most commendations are done one time, and the most it goes is doing or selling something like 30 times, if the commendation even has that. As a day one player, I fell in love with events and commendations like this, and now its not fun; its turning into something that I have to work at, like a job. The new really grindy commendations aren't saved for insanely cool stuff anymore, but they have become for everything new that is unlockable in the game.

    you say "grindy", i say "longevity" and imo i think the Rare devs would agree.

    the new commendations aren't timed/limited and the season has only just started.

    I grinded out shark kills at the shrine of hungering before the milestone changes were made. I grinded dark relic voyages spending doubloons to get all the ritual skulls at random I needed before they disappeared. I took a chest of rage to an island and shot it thousands of times just to ignite 1000 skellies with fire, before that event even ended. I can 100% sympathize with that playstyle. Don't assume you know me.

    We now have one time commendations, we have short 25 or 30 count commendations, and we have long grindy commendations, all for new permanent additions to the game that will not ever leave.
    Some players like short one time commendations to celebrate finishing new content for the first time.
    Some like repeatable content that have you come back to several times to drive interaction with crews trying to do the same thing.
    Other people like long grindy lengthy milestones that take weeks or months to complete. Long term goals.
    They gave us all three types with this permanent addition to the game.

    I haven't disagreed that they are unbalanced but that might be intentional. They might have wanted to give us commendations of varying lengths to accommodate different playstyles.

    A true completionist would be upset if all these commendations were short and done in a few hours of play.

    If you get upset at me for killing a shark when you wanted the kill for your commendation, then that's your choice of attitude, but imagine your best friend, your first mate getting genuinely angry with you over a shark or something like that, just because of a commendation.

    I wouldn't want to play with someone like that, and getting upset over something like that defeats the purpose of enjoying a video game and having fun.

  • @o37gekko yeah but the old cosmetics used to be a ship set and clothing set I can get if I grinded for a week. The new cosmetics are base sovereign weapon skins that will take me a year to get. I love grinds if the stuff is worth it. The fortunes ship and clothing set is a great example, but even then, its only 60 chests, 90 or 120 for future things they add, but at least you get stuff for progressing the grind,, and it isn't an insanely high number.

    Killing sharks with the double barrel is especially obnoxious because it takes and entire five shots to kill a single shark. you can only kill one before you have to reload, so even when three spawn at once it's annoying. Kill one, shoot last bullet into one, climb back on the boat, reload, kill the next one, reload, etc.

    Shoot them twice with an eye of reach; deliver the killing blow with the double barrel.

    Find an ammo box, throw it in the water, no need to board the ship for some time.

    Crew up, have your crewmate do some damage to a shark, do the killing shot yourself.

  • Yea this is like the 4th or 5th time they have been like "This update has no actual content so go re-farm everything you swore to never do again because it sapped the fun out of the game" With the addition of hourglass I decided to stop caring about commendations and just focus on trying to get all the achievements. Which even then I am taking my time with. While I think LoTV is a much better PL voyage the final battle, while easy to solo sloop is a tad tedious. I only manage to get like 3 LoTVs done per season before getting bored.

    What bugs me even more is they wanted Item number to display on the hourglass factions reputation pane since it displays on all others... But the other trade companies items over write the old versions. I don't believe the figureheads work like that. I bought the best looking one so now I am at 1/5 items and have no desire to clutter my cosmetic chest by buying 8 inferior looking versions of the cosmetics.

    Hopefully we will start getting so nice QoL updates coming since they supposedly hired a team to focus on such things... But we haven't seen evidence of this team in action yet so... Smoke and mirrors?

  • Perhaps people are annoyed with the commendations because these are new weapons with skins they could have earned previously in a natural way if they existed before.

    Allow me to explain myself. Imagine that shipewrecks always existed, but they only had normal chests in them, and this season introduced the barnacled chests, that means it would 300 shipwrecks starting from this season while it could have been something they could have been working on since previous seasons. This is basically the same, the game had tons of sharks, and 250 was already done by many, but the weapons and commendations were introduced this season, those are 6 years late into the game, 6 years players could have already started working on those.

    It is the same feeling that people had with captaincy back then when it was introduced in season 7, a lot of people already caught every fish variant, defeated some shrouded ghosts, and made some achievements, but none of those counted retroactively because they weren't done in a captained ship, and captained ships didn't exist back then.

    I also find really odd that the commendations are required for unlocking skins of basic sets, like the admiral set and sea dog set. The admiral, sea dog, bilge rat and sovereign set, with some of their variants existed since 2018, and we're considered the four basic sets. Those skins were available from the get go without significant barriers. I wonder why they chose the basic sets as rewards for these commendations instead of putting them in the outposts without barriers, and put new special skins behind these commendations.

    The admiral set was ready for purchase as soon as you got the game, and gained some gold, even the fishing rod being behind the plentifins was fine because it only required one of each plentifin, and the admiral captain items required the emmissary milestones that is earned passively in the pirate milestones by earning gold as an emmissary, which is a common activity.
    The sea dog set was also available at the beginning, with the fishing rod being available after getting one of each wildplash. The captaincy items required sleeping in the bed, or sitting or playing music on the ship which is also something that can be earned naturally.
    But the admiral weapons require you to finish a skeleton or ashen lords and being you the one finishing the final blow, and while it is true that you may encounter many lords in the future you actively need to go with the new weapons and try to be the one delivering the final hit with the new weapons. The sea dog weapons require a thousand of skellies with the new weapons specifically which means players will have to actively avoid using the other four weapons until they get it, and it must be skeletons, not phantoms nor ocean crawlers, nor sharks nor sirens.l, only skeletons, which granted they are the most common enemy, but it is still something more specific and more time consuming than anything else the locked seas dog items required.
    Finally the royal sovereign set, those items could be unlocked by leveling up the gold hoarders to level 50 which was naturally done on the road to pirate legend. But the royal sovereign pistol and knife require all the war chest commendations, that means not only doing the previous tasks, but also do specific ones like getting an enemy player off a harpoon line with the horn of fair winds, hit a megalodon with the scattershots many times, and have bonecaller skeletons eliminate the ashen variant of the enemy skeletons., carrying loot one by one with the harpoon (which regular harpooning is still more efficient), sell horn of fair winds hundreds of times, and use scattershots against players, all of that for the royal sovereign double pistol and knife, which the rest of the set unlocked by leveling up gold hoarders. I find it really odd, perhaps it would have been better if it was the cartographer double pistol, or perhaps a new set never seen before, or perhaps a standalone knife.

    Killing a lot of skeletons with the double barrel pistol is fine, as many players will encounter them a lot, and any skeleton variant counts, doing that with sharks is where some people start to feel it stings as sharks are more tanky (I think they take like 5 shots, while skeletons take only 1), and they only appear when players spend too much time on the water or going specifically to the shrine of hungering, which is like going out of your way instead of doing something naturally. The thing is some players don't feel it natural or passively, but instead they feel like they are going out of their way to do these oddly specific and tasks, while stuff like the golden leaf set is earned much more naturally since small golden relics for the gold hoarders appear everywhere.

    I don't know why, but the developers sometimes make players repeat the same stuff over and over, and that can be annoying to some people, that feels like artificial replayability instead of organic replayability, it's like they are not repeating something because they enjoy it, but because there is an incomplete number in the commendations that asks them to repeat it. The best example that comes to my mind are the shores of gold tall tales vs the newest tall tales. Some players may repeat the shores of gold tall tales because the commendations asks them to repeat it five times each. Meanwhile the Pirate's life and Monkey Island Tall tales can be done once, but people may want to repeat them to check hidden secrets or find paths that they didn't take before or do the optional tasks that were not required to complete the tall tale itself, but can offer some things they missed the first time. That is artificial replayability ba organic replayability. Someone enjoying something a lot and that why they repeat it, and someone doing something again and again because that task is incomplete.
    For me, I love sea forts, they are fun for me. I already completed all the commendations for sea forts in season 6, and I still do them because I like how they are a reliable source of resources, explosives, and loot. I can monitor my ship constantly, I get cooked food, I can find trinkets, I can get a mix of loot for the three main companies, I can play with minimal risk if the server is too heated. The sea forts is content I repeat because I enjoy it, not because I have to complete like 500 sea forts.

    If I have to go out of my way to do something, then I really can't say I will earn that naturally, but instead I would say I'm grinding. Perhaps that what everyone feels when they say there is nothing to do in the game. Perhaps it is the feeling of having everything explored, even if it is not maxed out, but have everything experienced at least once.

    Anyway, I think some of the commendations may be a bit overboard because some require specific tasks that can't be earned naturally, but also tasks that are dependant on RNG.

    In the end, I think I will simply get the admiral and sea dog skins, and then focus on other things, I don't feel like completing any other commendation as those are very time consuming.

  • The real problem with these recommendations is not so much the number of things to do, as we veteran players are used to, but that it's done to unlock 4 skins in total, 2 for each new weapon.
    I wouldn't spend my life making these recommendations if, in the end, it meant gaining 4 recolor....
    The worst thing about this season is that there are more skins for these new weapons in the emporium than in the outpost stores.

  • @testakleze Okay I think we are getting somewhere - @Dragotech123 put it nicely - it's not about the length of the comms. It's the fact that you are forced to repeat old content and then there is also this annoying element of rng.

    100 veils from 0 to 100 probably take as long as the 250 horns, if youre doing both of them solo without using any unintended strategies. But veils are just way more exciting for a number of reasons. Also veils do not involve an annoying degree of rng.

    And horns are probably one of the more exciting commendations of the new update. Killing 250 sharks, shooting 250 skelly ships with bonecallers or shooting 1000 ghostships with scattershots are just extremely repetitive and boring. It's like the unnerfed milestones all over again - and the devs did admit that those numbers were a mistake and nerfed them.

    My problem is, that the comms just feel extremely lazy. I get that they are meant to keep engagement with certain content high to create scenarios where players bump into each other. But this justification only holds true for the Worldevent related commendations really, not for the bonecaller comms. I personally think that there needs to be some kind of justification for a more grindy commendation. It needs to be an exciting task that can be linked to a cool piratey story.

    Like 1000 kingly treasure takes a long time too but it also made us all excited over bottlemaps and shipwrecks again - plus the new chests looked gorgeous.

  • @hiradc I would argue most commendations are pointless. It's just stats and a title. Those that are linked to cosmetics are worth the grind.

  • Most of them are doable in a few weeks if you plan your sessions and playstyle accordingy, however the 250 horns is insane.

    The average player will never get close to 250 sold.

  • The problem for me is not so much that the numbers are high and it takes time to complete the commendations, but WHAT you have to do exactly. I'm ok with killing 1000 skeleton captains, because it's what you actually do during normal play, but hitting megalodons with a scattershot? Good luck with that as they keep their distance most of the time and the only moment they get close enough is when they attack, but then you have very little time to load the scattershot. The same with carrying loot onto the ship by using a harpoon tightrope - who does that? That's completely inefficient. I would also argue that wasting Bone Callers on skeleton ships is not what most players would like to do, as it is such a great pvp tool... the list goes on.
    At least reduce the numbers on the most ridiculous commendations, 25 instead of 250 for example.

  • @testakleze U r correct. Except u left out the part of most the people whining and talking about going to safer seas to do these r the same people who whined when safer seas was announced. There issue is that they cant go and wait for some one to finish the fof then sink them and take the loot and get credit for the final shot. They have to actually do something. Most of the war chest achievement is doing things yourself, no credit for riding coat tails. So safer seas is now good for them. I figure that's because they r afraid of getting messed with when finishing that fort or ashen event. None of the achievements were meant to be done in a week. And none of them r hard to do. Just time consuming. Which is the point in the 250 shark kills. Or even the 250 kegs explosions. The weak players r the ones that will jump to safer seas instead of playing the game with others. They gotta hurry and get it done so they can run around and grieve others trying to do it the way it should have to be done.

    Whats Broken or Op? You have 250 skeleton ships to hit with Bone Caller, Kill 250 Sharks with DB.
    You know what else? You got Months if not Years to achieve this.

    As it should. Its called, Personal Progress, dont piggyback off your skillful/exploit friends.

  • The grades are downright bizarre, i remember talking to my friend about how 25 horns sold was breath of the sea grind all over again when i found out they causally put a zero behind there lol. Even the most fanatic inner core of players will never see this commendation unlocked. Perhaps the most annoying aspect is the rng. Never seen one in shipwrecks and most shrines/treasuries dont even spawn one. What does it take? 300 hours to complete 1 singular commendation?

    Plus as mentioned here the megalodon commendation that requires 500 scattershot hits. Lets be generous and assume you have some luck, and dont have crewmates to account for, and end meg encounters having scored 20 scatter hits. By this logic itd take 49 MORE megs which would take even the most active players probably a year if you assume they stop for every one that pops its head which of course no one will especially if you take into account they tend to pop up most when several player ships are near eachother. Some other commendations like like popping skeletons with the respective weapons are much more reasonable. Its like whoever made the scales had no consistency whatsoever

  • yea seriously.. how many times do we need to refarm the game all over again? and now what sell 250 wind horns? even at the rate of 3 per hour if im lucky thats 80+ hours of gameplay if none get stolen. thats more work than chests of fortune and those actually have value unlike these horns.

    also trying to work on the new commendations so im using the knife and the double barrel pistol and literally the game is unplayable for me without lunge.... what am i supposed to canon off my ship instead of lunge? not to mention slowest knife ever.... 1. everyone runs faster with a knife..... video games 101..... also knifes always have fastest attack speed. instead the knife offers little benefit that i can see. and the double barrel feels awful.... this stuff got through testing somehow. also why cant the other guns get a 6th bullet? especially if a single shot from the double barrel isnt even as powerful as a single shot from the normal flint lock. all those videos showing these new weapons 1 shotting people... smh

    Don't forget that you also need to find lots of skellies with kegs and hit them with the knifes, or even have the rarest projectile in the game have it's skeletons defeat a specific variant of certain skeleton, but going into the roar for the ashen one may cause trouble due to geysers either stealing the kills or having the bonecaller ones be destroyed. Did I mention that one commendations is for a thousand of skellies and another is a thousand of phantoms? Repeat with the other weapon as well for a total of 4000 enemies. Not counting the sharks in a different commendation.

    All of this for the royal sovereign weapon skins.

  • @dragotech123 some wisdom on the ashen skellies. Solo dive to an ashen lord. They have 3 skelly swings of HP. I got the commendation with about 8 bone callers. Only because sometimes they bum rush the lord and die. But yeah, Meg, player boats, skelly boats AND GHOST BOATS with 500-1000 scatters is utterly insane.
