Consistent yet random crash to desktop with no errors PC

  • I crashed a bunch solo before the last update, but I haven't tried solo after yet. I last crashed in MP sessions.

Might try I suppose. Don't have as much motivation to keep trying anymore when it keeps crashing randomly. It becomes such a timesink x.x

  • @FrodoTheHobo734 Just played over an hour solo, but it still crashed while raising the anchor :/

It does seem more stable, than when i played with friends yesterday

  • Still crashing guys. Doesnt have any logic of what i do. still random crash with different locations.
It did crashed few times when i died that it crashed during loading back in. did not seen the ferry even.

  • just posting to say me too.
    4080 Super
    i9 14900k

I reinstalled the game, updated graphics drivers, repaired the install, verified the game files in the xbox app, same issues.
There are no error codes suggesting any reason.

very hard to troubleshoot and frustrating.

Lost lots of loot today :(

  • Had a 4 hour and 2 hour session sunday without crashing.

Only real difference was i went into asus gpu tweak 3 and set power target from 100 to 110.

  • I updated my support ticket that I still had the crashing issues but haven't heard anything back. Not even acknowledging that I reopened the ticket :/

  • Twice tonight the game just froze, and said something about updating my drivers (they have been), before collapsing it down.

Restarted, got allmondbeard, marblebeard, okrabeard, until it finally worked. Dove to a voyage, and I end up parked at an outpost, or I get a black screen that lasts so long, I have to log out.

No idea what's going on or why, but it's getting old.

  • It's more stable than before update where i can go a few hours now without a crash mostly but they still do happen.

I received a reply from support basically saying that i should be able to run the game fine and do a clean boot without any background processes. I've already did all that in the past trying to fix it when i thought it was on my end.

Their latest patch definitely helped, it's just not fixed it completely. If people can please include their crash reports in their support tickets it might help them isolate it quicker as it doesn't sound like they know what's causing it and just assuming its player hardware.

  • @hercuhealys

Update hasn't made a single difference for my partner and I and we are still crashing just as much.

I also can't give support any additional information since I'm not getting any error codes when I crash (in event viewer or from the game). Is there a way to get crash reports? I've searched online and couldn't find anything.

  • @frodothehobo734

    Appdata\local\crash dumps

Should have ones listed along the lines of sotcrash.

  • I sent over a crashdump from that folder, will see if that goes anywhere.

  • Replying to this thread to say that I've tried literally everything and still can't play the game.
The random crashes happen anywhere from 20 mins to an hour of playing.

I have opened a ticket with SoT support, but man... it's like pulling teeth. They have asked me for so much information from my end without any suggestions to help at all.
Every other email is clearly an automated response and not a real person. I have had to send several "hey just following up still haven't heard back" emails over the course of the past couple of days.

What I've tried so far with 0 impact on the issue at hand:

Switching from GamesPass/Xbox app to Steam version
Reinstalling the game on both platforms
Verifying game files/repairing install (both platforms)
Reinstalling GPU driver from scratch (uninstalled and reinstalled it)
    Tried DX11 and DX12
Tried to make the applications for Xbox, Steam, and SoT never go into power save mode (saw this somewhere in the forums)
    SFC /scannow
Reinstalled C++ Redistributable on my PC
    Run as administrator
    Run in compatibility mode
    Check PC for windows updates
Shut down every other app on PC while playing SoT (including Discord, Chrome, Spotify etc)
    I don't overclock anything
I reset the MS Store (saw that on a forum somewhere)
    Disabled all anti-virus
    DISM Restore Health
    Reinstalled my .NET Framework
Deleted all local app data for SoT, then Reinstalling the game from scratch

Nothing has even remotely given me a sign of progress.
At this point - I am willing to try just about anything.

  • @yung-goaty Feeling the same wall, done so much with little effect on the crashes. Haven't found any new suggestions to try.

The fact that it also happened for me on Xcloud made me wonder if it's almost account-specific. But support never really replies back so it's hard to get any information going. Still waiting any response on my end :/

  • Adding to this post, hopefully for visibilities sake for Rare. Same exact crashing everyone describes here and have tried all the solutions support has offered.

It’ll happen nearly randomly, but I have noticed it may be less frequent when being on a ship more often. For example, I can go 1hr+ doing hourglass fights, but it seems like any island hopping or going to outposts brings all manner of crashing misfortune to me (maybe can go 30mins or 2hrs if I’m lucky).

Additionally, after the first crash, the frequency picks up and can happen nearly ever 5-30mins. Absolutely unacceptable.

  • Tried some more this weekend. Still having the same issues. I’ve even tried re-installing windows.
Just like others, the crashes are usually within 20 minutes. Sometimes the app will stay running longer, I’ll think it’s fixed, I’ll join up with my friends, start to get invested and: FREEZE. Thats about the time you start to ask yourself why you're even trying anymore.

I have an open ticket with Rare support, but as of today it looks like it was passed off to a different representative - who then sent me a copy & paste of what the first guy said and marked my ticket as “solved.”

It’s not solved. Nothing is solved. This is still very broken and the support from Rare is incredibly disappointing.

  • Support closed my ticket with some generic troubleshooting steps I've already performed :/

The issue here is, it seems fine then it'll crash, like Yung says. It's so hard to get invested into the game when there's this constant uncertainty. So I've stopped playing due to this :(

I understand it's seemingly a niche issue but this is a shame they just close, I had crash logs and all for them. Will try reporting again. Going on almost 1 month where the game has been nearly unplayable.

  • Honestly Rare support is probably one of the single worst customer service I have ever encountered. Their "Support" isn't even a support, any attempt to ask to further the issue to the relevant party goes off the window and I'm pretty sure what they usually do is just sit down and copy-paste robotic responses and mark it as "Solved" so they don't get called out for not doing their job or something.

2 Months and no fix in sight, A lot of people having issues and they introduced Gilded Voyages that REQUIRED long hours to complete. like how ignorant can they be to do that?

I'm 100% sure if they saw this thread, they probably think its solved because people responded to it. Truly incompetent people they are.

  • No update on my ticket today - appears to still be marked as "solved."
    Which, again, it is not.

I really wish I could just be like "I'm done with this company," but I realllllllly want to play with my friends lol.

Is everyone in this thread on a 10th gen Intel CPU?
    I have an i9 14900K

  • I might have found a spot that can trigger the crashes more often, it's not uncommon to end up getting back to back crashes within a few minutes of each other but never have i had three crashes in a row before until now and they were all at the same spot while doing the same thing.

While ascending the ramp from the Crescent Isle treasure vault and carrying loot i crashed three times in a row as soon as i reached the top of the ramp, this is the first time i've ever had the crashes happen so quickly back to back and the fact it was all in the exact same spot at the same location while doing the same task all three times seems like more than a coincidence.

  • I may have found a fix for you guys:

If you're launching through steam follow the instructions in this link
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Seaofthieves/comments/1aun9ni/if_youre_unable_to_launch_in_steam_add_dx11_into/
I've been trying to fix this for weeks and this just did it.

  • @yung-goaty I have an AMD Ryzen CPU (7 5800x) so it probably isn't linked to this if it happens across two different brands. But I'm not an expert on that stuff ^^

I can try playing through steam with -dx11 tag on just to see perhaps.

  • Same problem here, i did a fresh win 11 install, updated everything, all the drivers etc... Disabled overclock, tested my ram and my ssd with /sfc scannow
no problem at all on every other game but SOT is crashing randomly.
    Very frustrating.

  • They mentioned crashing pretty heavily in the latest dev video. I am cautiously optimistic about better performance here after next update :)

  • My crashes seems to be related to walking on ropes or heavily increased at least. I have been able to finish some sessions without crashes just avoiding walking on ropes. May be it's just luck but...

  • New patch is out.

Has it helped any of you guys?

  • @jc-colding

Nope, same CTD with no errors or an obvious way to send a crash report, despite them saying there was a way to report in a video of theirs recently.

It’s possible the crashing is mildly less frequent, but I haven’t played enough to confirm.

  • Still not fixed yet this is frustrating.

  • @jc-colding

Alright, played a few sessions and did not use the harpoon walking and not a single crash for 3hrs+. Might give that a try and see if that helps anyone.

  • @dcanizares

Yeah there is something to this. I played 3hrs+ no crashing thanks to not walking on the ropes.

  • @soggyhead1 good to hear that it helps.

Walking on ropes was defitnetly a part of it for me before. That and Auto walking.

Since i set my Power Target to 110 on my Asus 4070 TI.
I have been able to use Ziplines without crashing.

But really hope there is a solid fix for everyone soon!

  • Got the crash again after trying since the newest crash fix update.

I can say it happened after using tightrope to bring loot on board my sloop, for what it's worth. As soon as I got on board and dropped the loot the game crashed. I haven't tried enough to know if it's currently limited to such scenarios.

  • I've been avoiding harpoon tightropes for awhile now and have been experiencing no crashes since then but i've not really been playing long enough sessions lately for it to be conclusive.

  • @hercuhealys said in Consistent yet random crash to desktop with no errors PC:

I've done this too, haven't got crashes in a long while.

I might try a whole day session just to see if it completely works.

  • How are people faring here? Does it seem to be limited to walking on tightropes?

  • @fiksii

Haven't crashed a single time since avoiding tight ropes, i decided to put it to the test today, i crashed within 5 minutes of using a tight rope from my harpoon gun.
