Need Clarification on Console Aim Assist

  • Hi everyone!

    I'm playing on console and currently adjusting my settings in Sea of Thieves. I'd like to understand precisely what the 'Aim Assist' settings do, particularly the 'Slow Motion Strength' and 'Rotation Strength'.

    Do these settings really impact aiming accuracy in naval combat or during PvP encounters?

    I'm having a bit of trouble understanding how these options influence gameplay, and I don't want to miss out on a setting that could improve my performance.

  • Rotational aim assist is when the game helps you track moving targets by rotating your camera for you if a target passes through the center of your perspective. (Game is aiming for you)

    Slowdown aim assist is when the game slows down your camera for you as you aim over a target. (Game is helping you aim)

    A super easy to remember and good input scheme for controller is 8 for main sensitivity and all weapons, 0.1 deadzone and 3.0 response curve.

    If you don’t like how sticky 3.0 response curve is try 2.5 or 2.

Now that I better understand how these settings work, I'm wondering: could pushing the aim assist too far, whether it's the slow motion or rotation, actually harm accuracy instead of improving it? Have you had any experiences or read any feedback on this? I want to make sure I don't end up making my aim less effective by setting these parameters too high.

    Absolutely it can. It can be a blessing and a curse depending on the situation.

    I want a toggle for aim assist working on PvE though because the PvE is all very easy to hit without aim assist and also because one situation where having aim assist on is bad is when there’s a group of skeletons and players mixed in with them. The aim assist can hinder your ability to aim at players in these types of situations.

    Another situation where aim assist can hinder your ability to aim correctly is when you need to lead your shot because your target is on a fast moving ship or is sprinting at a distance. The aim assist does not help you lead your shot it only helps you lock on to your target’s hitbox. So aim assist should only function up to a certain range from you and currently it works way too far out.

    If Rare could make those two simple tweaks to aim assist:

    (1) PvE Aim Assist toggle
    (2) Decrease the range of Aim Assist so it doesn’t hinder a player’s ability to lead their shot when they need to do so.

    Then it would be useful all of the time in all situations.

    I think it would probably be wise to tailor the range of aim assist to each weapon because each one has a different effective range.

    The blunderbuss for example shouldn’t be locking on to a player that’s outside of its effective range. Same for the pistols and sniper. Effective range means no leading your shot required just aim for the target.

    I think throwing knives shouldn’t get aim assist because of how powerful they are and because their velocity is so low that you need to lead them a lot of the time so aim assist would be a hindrance.

    The Aim Assist is a soft pull in on your aim it helps you rather than guarantees you are fully on target... especially in a face paced combat situation.

    Most console players I play with now have it on... there's also some accessibility settings which add some extra sounds for help in this area.
