for me the solution is:
Assign buttons in the main menu when entering the game
(that is, you need to assign buttons without being in a game session)

This has worked for me before as well, last year or 2022 even.
However it has become less and less successful/reliable and sadly must go onto the pile of "barely functioning workarounds (that are also not a real solution)".

Hello everyone,
hello Rare team,it's been years now since this bug first haunted sailors and it still is an issue to this day.
With the addition of new actions in today's update (crouch toggle, crouch hold, dart radial), having to re-map key bindings again and again becomes even more of a chore.
It's mindboggling to understand the issue. One month it's the "Bait" action that won't bind, the next month it's all F-keys that can't be used.
Please, please, please finally make this a priority item and solve it for us.
Thank you!

Hello everyone,
hello mods,
hello devs.
It has been 2 months since the original post and there's still no acknowledgement of this bug.
While we are demanding a fix, we know that priorities are likely different for you.
However, at least a nod towards you caring would go a long way.
Please do respond.

Back from a brief holiday and checking in.
Aside from the wonderful new outpost buildings, can we expect this issue to be looked at soon?
I've had this bug on and off for about 2 years. The method people posted on here does work, you just have to do it while in the main menu and in a specific order.
But this shouldn't be the solution. They shouldn't come to peace with an issue like this, just because they know there is a temporary MacGyver-fix for it.. (that has to be performed every single time the game is rebooted).
The settings are for a reason. They are supposed to save between sessions.
This bug will keep happening again and again, since people are always changing their settings around. That be audio levels, input sensitivity, graphics settings, changing keybinds for the new features that keeps getting added and so on.
Even if you manage to get your settings to stick once with this method of resetting keybinds, this issue isnot going to go away, and will come back at a later point.

Thank you, friend. That was very eloquently put and hit the nail on the proverbial head.
