for me the solution is:
Assign buttons in the main menu when entering the game
(that is, you need to assign buttons without being in a game session)

This has worked for me before as well, last year or 2022 even.
However it has become less and less successful/reliable and sadly must go onto the pile of "barely functioning workarounds (that are also not a real solution)".

Hello everyone,
hello Rare team,it's been years now since this bug first haunted sailors and it still is an issue to this day.
With the addition of new actions in today's update (crouch toggle, crouch hold, dart radial), having to re-map key bindings again and again becomes even more of a chore.
It's mindboggling to understand the issue. One month it's the "Bait" action that won't bind, the next month it's all F-keys that can't be used.
Please, please, please finally make this a priority item and solve it for us.
Thank you!

Hello everyone,
hello mods,
hello devs.
It has been 2 months since the original post and there's still no acknowledgement of this bug.
While we are demanding a fix, we know that priorities are likely different for you.
However, at least a nod towards you caring would go a long way.
Please do respond.

Back from a brief holiday and checking in.
Aside from the wonderful new outpost buildings, can we expect this issue to be looked at soon?
I've had this bug on and off for about 2 years. The method people posted on here does work, you just have to do it while in the main menu and in a specific order.
But this shouldn't be the solution. They shouldn't come to peace with an issue like this, just because they know there is a temporary MacGyver-fix for it.. (that has to be performed every single time the game is rebooted).
The settings are for a reason. They are supposed to save between sessions.
This bug will keep happening again and again, since people are always changing their settings around. That be audio levels, input sensitivity, graphics settings, changing keybinds for the new features that keeps getting added and so on.
Even if you manage to get your settings to stick once with this method of resetting keybinds, this issue isnot going to go away, and will come back at a later point.

Thank you, friend. That was very eloquently put and hit the nail on the proverbial head.
the weirdness of this game something wonky in the coding or something. i had the same issue with settings not saving but for me it was audio settings. support said reset everything in every menu tree to default. then reload the game. so for me resetting audio options to default alone didnt work. but resetting controller options AND sound options to default DID work.... so i had to redo all my keybinds just so i could make the game actually save my audio settings..
now if they could only fix volume mixer from having 50 instances of seas of thieves because every time i hit set sail in a play session it clones itself.....

Happy new year everyone, and thank you all again for chiming in.
The issue still persists.
I have tried all the different fixes mentioned here and elsewhere again, just to be sure. Resetting to default the keyboard section, the controller section, both sections, all sections. Signing in and out of the Xbox profile. Deleting the Xbox profile stored data. (And so on...)
Settings still to not save between game launches.
Please, Rare, get this up on the priority list.
Thank you,
Shardreg
Yes, this issue haunts me since the start of season 14. I managed to fix the issue of the automatically rebinding crouch key by "giving in" and accepting that SoT only accepts CTRL to be on toggle crouch. Whenever I change it, on the next start it would remap it automatically. Interestingly, even other keybinds that I changed were also remapped. So I used the "set to default" workaround and that fixed it somewhat. But I still cant bind toggle crouch to anything else than CTRL, otherwise it just gets reset. And fore some reason, the keybind to toggle the HUD got unbound and I also cant change that. Whenever I set it to a key, even the default backspace, it gets removed next game session. Set to default and rebinding it doesn't work. And its strange, because the set to default should change the key for the HUD toggle to backspace, but it doesn't, it unbinds it instead.
Reset to Default only works for a set number of keybinds. If you're left handed like me and want everything on the opposite side of the keyboard then you have to pick and choose what keybinds you want to work because after a certain amount it stops saving them. When I asked support about it they only gave me the Reset to Default work around and that's all I got from them.
I have recently opened yet another support request regarding this issue and was advised to do the following:
- In the main menu, select Settings.
- Select 'Keyboard and Mouse' then scroll to the bottom of the list and select 'Reset to Default'.
- Repeat this for your 'Controller' settings and all other game settings.
- Back out to the main menu to confirm all changes.
- Close and reboot Sea of Thieves.
- Now when you enter the game, any further setting changes should now persist between sessions.
- If not, please repeat this process only changing a few settings at a time between reboots.
With a heavy heart I set out and did just that after carefully taking screenshots of all settings.
Indeed, after the advised reboot, all settings saved - except the keybindings.
I tried to selectively set the keybindings, also paying close attention to the "dangerous" ones already identified by the reddit community (e.g. Bait, Throwables, "More", etc.).
Again, no dice.
This cannot - must not - be the official answer and solution.
