Those Holiday Decorations Here Sure Do Use A Lot Of Power

  • Kind of funny observation, but the lights at the bottom of the website actually technically use more IRL power to run...

I have a CPU monitor on my Stream Deck and when I scroll down the page to the lights, my CPU usage* immediately jumps from 1/2% to ~30% (Ryzen 7 7700x) and my CPU fans ramp up as if I'm gaming. Scroll back up and it goes back down. They're just hilariously unoptimised.

(* for those wondering, I have GPU acceleration turned off on Chrome so YT videos play better, less stutter)

  • Maybe the lights are actually Ancient Coin miners? I got an Ancient Skeleton spawn yesterday for the first time awhile so this conspiracy is confirmed IMO.

  • Looks like they're actually crossfading between 3 PNG files on the fly, so that explains it... I'm not a web developer but I would have thought there's a better way to get that effect without the same impact on performance? WEBM?

  • @realstyli Yeah I dived in to the code earlier too... Not how I'd have pulled it off... but I wont knock another devs choice.

Plus, I like the festive touch!

  • @musicmee

Yep. I mean, if it was permanent, I might be complaining. And it still looks good and works. Easy enough to avoid scrolling down as well, so not a big problem in the grand scheme of things.
