This game is trying to please too many people in a single open world making the game worst for everyone

  • At this point I have a hard time trying to figure out what audience would really like Sea of Thieves which is a problem. Don't get me wrong this game has the ability to cater to so many different players, but the way Rare has being going about it has just been detrimental to everyone. Overall the game is in a worst spot right now for all player groups.

PvPvE Players: These players who love the initial dream for SoT a beautiful mix of PvPvE exploring the world, gathering loot, stealing from other players, forming alliances and having all the amazing interactions SoT was once known for are now a thing of the past. HG and server hopping causes servers to be dead for the most part, easy loot and loot turn in gives players no reason to commit to a server they started playing on. Even supplies have become entirely meaningless due to them being EXTREMELY plentiful. There is no reason to stay on a server people just constantly hopping killing any meaningful player interactions.

RP players: More rare of players, but some of the best people to run into when playing the game! I used to love being able join a server and just RP w/ some friends meeting crews and dragging them into our shenanigans. And there are more tools then ever to let us do this, but there are NO players. Nothing is more painful to watch then going into a server and seeing 2 1v1 battles taking place meaning that in about 5 minutes you will be the ONLY ship left on your server as they are both about to hop to their next HG match.

PvP Players: HG is an absolute mess of a mode with some games being fast fun phenomenal experiences and others making you want to uninstall SoT and go play another game. Supplies in this mode are so BEYOND insanely important that the game is required to provide you a way to get them quickly making the game worst for PvPvE players, however they are not even enough. Joining into HG to run into a ship with 10x your supplies capable of taking cannon shots w/ 20% accuracy from a tile away while you're counting your wood is not fun gameplay.

This entire mode is an absolute cluster mess trying to incorporate a competitive PvP mode w/MMR into a random open world while only giving players meaningful rewards through win streaks... Like I'm sorry Rare but whoever made this decision should feel bad this literally combined three incompatible things together showing absolutely 0 foresight.

Competitive PvP w/MMR + random open world ruins the competitive aspect losing due to supplies or some other player interaction feels bad, in addition adding this competitive fixed PvP matches in the open world makes the game worst for players trying to enjoy the world and run into ships trying to do the same.

Competitive PvP w/MMR + win streaks: like do people not understand how MMR works!!?!?! W/ proper working MMR you should only have about a 50% win streak. Problem with this is Rare implements a system that rewards players off of win streaks!?!?! Literally 2 competing systems at play here. And this exists because in Rare's mind MMR can't be a meaningful metric, so we can't reward players based off of MMR, therefore we can't have MMR work properly either because then being higher MMR would be a disadvantage leading to MMR tanking. These 2 systems are FUNDAMENTALLY incompatible.

Random open world + Win streaks: Similar to as stated above having your rewards being tied to randomness feels bad. If anyone has played any competitive game before the main reason people will call it quits is not toxicity or unbalanced gameplay, but losing to stuff out of their control ex: someone going AFK on your team, or some guy deciding to purposefully throw the game. Sea of Thieves decided to make it part of the game! Like what was the thought process here?

This entire game is worst for everyone because Rare is constantly trying to force different player bases together who want to play the game in fundamentally different ways. PvPvE + RP players are not having the chance to have fun meaningful interactions with other crews and experience the open world. PvP players are not getting a fair and fun way to practice and improve at PvP.

All of these modes are required for the game to be great. Players NEED a good way to practice PvP to feel like they have a way of improving after losing in the open world. Players need a fun open world with ships also looking for a fun experience to keep the magic of SoT. The fix is so obvious and simple which is why it hurts... Let players queue for HG OUTSIDE OF OPEN WORLD. If you want to HG in open world defend your loot or try to steal other peoples loot that's amazing that is the best part of HG, but this current system with everyone hopping is the worst it can be.

Funny enough the people who won in the end out of all this is the player base that Rare said they would not support being the pure PvE single player players with safer seas... It's insane to me that Rare decided to cater to this audience and neglect the rest.

  • @nitroxien I couldn’t agree more. This game offers such a unique PvP experience that sets it apart from the countless FPS games out there, which all start to feel similar after a while. This game demands teamwork, communication, and strategy—it’s so much more than just shooting people.

The only reason I played was because of the PvP aspect; it was an absolute blast with friends. But now? The state of the game is honestly a joke. I can’t even play without constant lag and teleporting, which completely ruins the experience.

We desperately need at least 10 ships per server and a proper battle royale mode—something like Arena, but without the chest mechanics. I just miss the way things used to be before they packed in all the cosmetics and catered so heavily to the PvE players.

  • The interesting thing is that many of us on the experienced/long term play side of things see things as a mess but they kinda ended up accidentally creating what they wanted all along, as a side effect of inconsistency in maintenance and direction.

They always wanted the goofy pirate game where people are doing stuff together.

Lots of the pvpers ended up leaving, the ones around are largely absorbed in the hg stuff or just taking easy dubs in a game that is less competitive than ever for big boats.

Most of the extreme adventure players like me are long gone.

It's just a bunch of players that wanna cheese and/or alliance or do contrived stuff for screenshots or social media/content creation stuff. Aka engagement, Aka goofy pirate game. Then some experienced casual play floating around in between that stuff.

I think they see their creation in 2024 a lot differently than we see their creation, imo.

It's a game where casual brig and galleon crews can go out there and easily win for 8 hour sessions at max profit, and I don't think they see that as a bad thing.

  • This entire game is worst for everyone

Nope. I’m good. I pvp when I can, pve all the time and RO full time because that is easy.

The players that find the worse of this game are the ones who look for it or allow it. Lag? What games doesn’t. Broken mechanics? What game has none.

PvPvE + RP players are not having the chance to have fun meaningful interactions with other crews and experience the open world

Still having a blast regardless of how others feel. The sweaty PvP can sink me if they wish, I’ll try again.
Pve stuff can get added or broken, I’ll make my own content. I’m roleplaying regardless because that the role, and the stage and setting is constantly switching.

    HG OUTSIDE OF OPEN WORLD

I read this and only thing that comes to mind why. Is someone got a third party ship, Meg spawn, skeleton ship attacking “ruining” the so called experience. XD

What are you even talking about? Great I am glad that you PvE in the game... Completely missed the entire point of my paragraph...

What are you responding to dude I never mentioned lag or broken mechanics once...

No one is talking about sweaty PvP players sinking them... Like not mentioned in the original post or any replies... Dude is actually have a conversation with himself here.

    HG OUTSIDE OF OPEN WORLD
I read this and only thing that comes to mind why. Is someone got a third party ship, Meg spawn, skeleton ship attacking “ruining” the so called experience. XD

Ah this makes sense you ignored the ENTIRE rest of the post and just responded to the solution proposed... Then proceeds to ask why? Dam maybe if you actually read the post you would understand why.

Perhaps spend a second and read the section discussing how the PvPvE experience has drastically changed over the years, how you can spend hours in this world and never encounter any other player. Read the section discussing how players are no longer committed to ships or servers so give up on loot quickly. Players don't make alliances and have all the interactions like they used to with the backstabbing betrayal and excitement.

Discussion how there is no one to RP with in the world and everyone is just server hopping to the next thing... How heartbreaking it is to join the amazing world of SoT and see on your server 2 HG battles taking place which if you did not understand means that YOU are the only actual ship on the server.

It's wild how someone who has been playing this game for years now can't see how this game has lost so much of what used to make it great from the amazing interactions you would have w/ crews, the exciting world seeing players actually running voyages, teaming up against the reaper of the server and all that made SoT so good.

Now a days it's just dive and repeat, and HG is the worst offender here by far with players literally taking slots in servers that they will instantly leave causing servers to not be able to build up a population and allow fun interactions to take place. Not to mention everything else they had to change in the game to accommodate for HG like significantly increasing base supplies and purchasable supplies. Back in the day I would loot the island by hand and just leave picking up supplies along the way, now we have the massively inflate the supplies in the world just to make HG work.

There is a reason this game is getting closer and closer to life support player base is the lowest average it has ever been on steam charts this might be the first holiday season ever the game loses players.

  • @wolfmanbush tbh I hope what your saying is wrong since it would be so sad if they lost what made SoT great, but a lot of evidence points to what your saying with all the social media competitions and rewards for following them on everything a lot of ways the game feels like almost a photo simulator game lol.

It's so sad that I seem to never get fun player interactions like I used to back in the day. Recently I feel my favorite moments in the game have been due to PvE not PvPvE like some funny interactions w/ NPC or using disguises in funny places.

Still have memories of the entire server trying to take down the reaper 5 and run away w/ whatever loot they can get, making fake alliances for FoF or Fotd to just betray allies at the end w/ them planning the exact same things. Even w/ this whole season being about stealth w/ the current state of the game and everyone diving most of the time and servers being dead not many chances to use all these fun mechanics.

Imagine if these stealth tools existed back in the old days before the loot inflation, diving, and HG causing dead servers. How much fun people could have had. Shame they prob released some of the most fun sandbox tools of all time, but there is no good time to really use them.

There is a reason this game is getting closer and closer to life support player base is the lowest average it has ever been on steam charts this might be the first holiday season ever the game loses players.

Numbers we can see on the outside aren't going in a great direction and they are definitely throwing everything out there to see what sticks as far as event/bonus spam goes,

but they just gave out the capstan to give a huge bump of cash to some streamers, and they really aren't getting much from that.

To me it seems they are aware their retention isn't going in the right direction but they still do good enough business to where it hasn't (yet) turned into a dire situation for them.

And it's a live service game with seasonal content, so if 15 ends up being popular then people get involved again.

  • @wolfmanbush I mean don't get me wrong I am happy I got the capstan always wanted it, but like Rare definitely did not do this for the sake of the streamers. This is the first holiday season that SoT is looking like it is losing average players else then gaining which is usually a peak selling point for them. They definitely are trying to get streamers to stream the game more for more advertisement considering how many streamers tbh have either stopped or diminished the amount of SoT they play. Even Pace22 is averaging less this year then previous years.

I'm more worried that the affects of diving + HG + loot inflation all put together is brining the game to an irreversible spot because tbh else then the bug problems w/ this season in terms of content it's one of the best ever made adding incredible new and fun tools to the sandbox. Just feel that w/ the state of the game right now it's hard to really use the new tools in a fun capacity.

Out of all the seasons so far added I genuinely feel that this one had some of the best content (not quality) to date.
