Something need to be done about what happens in game when you get disconnected

  • So I just recently got off a session where i was in devils roar sailing to sell stuff, anyway i was sailing through and got disconnected by the game for no aparent reason (got a beard error forgot which one off hand) but when i loaded back in there was a meg and another ship attacking me and my ship half way destroyed already, nothing i could have done to rescue it at all

That's bad luck - still better than in the early days where you could not reconnect at all and in all cases you lost your ship when solo.

  • And what could be done? Got any ideas?

well, ideal world make it so that these problems dont happen (as a fun side point ive put more hours into safer seas and never had anything like that happen to me before) maybe see if its possible to freeze the ship and player if the player is disconnected due to error essentially making it invisible and stopped in place, that way when the person re-connects they wouldnt have flown off the edge of the world at mach 3

What if the beard error happens when you're just in range of an active volcano ? Or a fort shooting at you ?

Making it invisible (or did you mean invincible ?) would be abused, people can alt-f4 when in a fight with other crews.

  • @lem0n-curry

It's for safer seas lol no other players.
Except Rare said it has to be in High Seas to be in safer so not likely.

Sometimes a tree falls on a powerline and you lose.

Not sure this happened on Safer Seas, I read it as they never had it happen on Safer Seas, but you could be right.

You're certainly right about this not only being possible to be a feature on Safer Seas only. Besides the statement by Rare, it would also be counter-productive to being a trainig tool if people expect their ship to be invincible during connecting again to the game when it occurs on the High Seas.

you say that as if that makes my idea a bad idea

simple solution, beard recovery time, you time how long it takes on the minimum spec system to go from being kicked due to a beard error to loaded back in and thats how long the people have to reconnect to the game or the ship acts like it was scuttled, and disconnected from the server so if your trying to avoid something you get punished

  • This can annoying if solo-slooping, but as @Lem0n-Curry says: It's better than it used to be when you could not get back in.

If not solo-ing, the crew that is left behind needs to deal with whatever dangers may emerge. What is is alternative? They get frozen until you get back???

I am not sure what you suggest? Should the ship drop anchor and sit there, immune to damage, theft of supplies, and theft of loot? This could be abused! A solo player sees a galleon bearing down on them, and then presses Alt-F4 (on PC) to crash out of the game. Then waits 10 minutes or so before rejoining, in the hope that the gally gets bored and goes away.

What if you ship is already holed? Should it not take on water?

  • nothing i could have done to rescue it at all

Always something to do but giving the information. It seems this would have happen anyways even if you didn’t log off. But also, Megs don’t attack sloops unless you attacked it.
As for the other ship. Bad luck

  • I mean, I remember friends getting dc'd, losing valuable resources they had on them at the time. That doesn't happen anymore thank goodness, so if I dc near an active volcano and sink, I'm not complaining lol.

  • @quickhakker you make the assumption that the server has any idea what is going on when you disconnect for whatever reason.

Yes on your client you get a beard error, but that error is defined by what it experiences in its communication.

From the servers POV you just disconnected (unless the server crashed).

This would mean, lets say this magic invisible ship thing becomes a thing, whenever i get into a fight and start losing i ALT-F4, the server experiences an unexpected disconnect and magically saves the ship. I then come back 9.45 minutes later, ah i am still getting attacked. ALT-F4

    Rinse and repeat.

Why use the ALT-F4 example ? Because that looks exactly the same to the server as a hazelnutbeard for example.

Another thing i could do is just unplug the network cable, disconnect my router/modem etc etc etc
