My son has SoT on Gamepass Ultimate which he streams to our TV. He wants me to play online with him, and I think my laptop could handle it.
If I buy a key for the Xbox PC version, can I redeem this on Steam so I can play online for free?
Actually, is it free to play online on PC? If I buy the game on the MS store on my laptop, I could play with him without a online subscription?
Sorry, I've not used Xbox since it was Gold on it 360!

No, you'd only get the MS Store/Xbox App version of the game on PC (though that digital licence does carry over to Xbox consoles because it's a Play Anywhere title). The Steam version is a separate platform.
