I've heard a lot of people complaining about bans and it finally happened to me. Randomly received a week long ban for toxic behavior. The only player interact that took place that session was sinking one opposing ship with the burning blade (very far off from the extreme toxicity I experience on a daily basis). Maybe they were salty and reported but according to Rare's own guidelines "Be a good sport. Sea of Thieves is a pirate game, and stealth, stealing and battles are all part of the fun. All pirates on the seas accept that, but be a good sportsman in both victory and loss." So if they ban people for simply playing the game the exact way they designed it then what's the point? I think its time to let this game die and move on.
Unwarranted Bans - Dying game with double standard
I dunno what happened in your situation but in general it's common for people to see themselves (or their friends) as defending or "not as bad as" others in conflict. Justifying behavior or comms that really shouldn't be happening.
See it in content creation all the time, social cliques/bubbles, etc.
Doesn't matter what other people do or other people did in the context of gaming. All that matters is what someone clips and sends in. That's what is gonna be examined in a report. Not who is "right" or "wrong", just what was said and done in that clip/report with evidence.
Best way to prevent more trouble is to self-reflect and clean up anything that doesn't look good in a clip (as far as rules go). At the end of the day you are the one that is gonna look out for you.
