Scyphophobia - Fear of jellyfish

  • Please add a visual option to turn off Jellyfish.

My dearest brother is long time player and a huge fan. Unluckily for him, he has Scyphophobia which is the phobia for Jellyfish. Since they were recently added he hasn’t been able to do any plundering on the open seas. I therefore ask so kindly if the talented devs at Rare would at least consider lending a hand, or hook, to all my fellow pirates with Scyphophobia. Sincerely, Thanks!

  • They haven't been added yet, they're coming on March 27th! An accessibility toggle for these things would be a good option as always, but i doubt he'll need to run into them too often!

  • so he hasnt played because of fear of something they hadnt even added to the game yet? and these are likely only going to be in the water near islands..... and theres a harpoon gun now so you never even have to enter the water...... while rare has been open to some special case QoL stuff like color blindness and limited hand mobility i cant picture them adding phobia modes. a lot more people are scared of sharks than of jellyfish i imagine..... and rightfully so sharks are scary. then again jellyfish are theoretically immortal so they might be vampires?

  • What about folks with a fear of water?!
dont forget to post for them too

You're being very flippant of a genuine accessibilty request here. As someone with (mild to medium level) thalassophobia, I knew what I as getting myself into with a pirate game set on water. But jellyfish haven't been in the game since the beginning and they're not essential to the theme, like water is.

IF jellyfish turn out to be nothing but dressing (no gameplay impact), then I see no reason not to add a toggle to turn them off.

Try not to make a mockery of accessibility options. When we include all gamers and build practical accessibility in, we all win!

  • @li-jratt-li

Not sure if you´re serious or not but that's already a thing; where the game forces you upwards when you end up in water

  • Hasn’t been added yet it was advertised months ago

My question. Why wasn’t this brought up before hand. Not days. Where do this sea playing pirates come out of the wet water and suddenly “I’m scared of this”

The creatures don’t seem to be seen to often do they appear to be appear often. Unlike sharks or megs

(Which I’m surprised nobody with galeophobia has asked for a switch to remove these. skelephobia even)

  • Didn't they release rats with an option to turn them off?

I dunno why this would be much different.

If it's worth it to help out with fear of rats then I'd say it is with jellyfish as well.

Creatures and critters rarely get added to SoT outside of pets, imo new stuff should have accessibility settings/features factored into release.

  • @burnbacon

It's been mentioned in threads suggesting Jellyfish be added.

If they're just decorative I'd love an option to turn them off. If they're more than decorative that just sucks.

  • I never thought I'd like a Burn Bacon post before!
aah. .. the turns of life...
    =D

  • I feel bad for those who have emetaphobia and play this game.

  • @wolfmanbush considering how generous the team at Rare has been with options to disable/cope with phobias, and the obvious performance hit these pure decoration things will be for something like the Xbox one, it's probably safe to assume there will be a toggle.

  • Fear of sea creatures, yet playing a game involving boating 95% of the time and being on and in the ocean. Probably falls out of the chair and has a fit when a Kraken pops up in game lol

All I can say is that devs can't catter for everyone even the 0000000000.1% of players who have weird phobias.

If jelly fish can hurt players like sharks etc, then being able to disable them is an advantage.

  • Its not exactly the most likely thing to have any change done on it, but since its essentially just visual clutter in the sea, an ability to turn it off would not only be accessability for an uncommon phobia, but also probably a framerate saver for people if they can turn them off. No real down side to making it a toggle.

  • I'm hydrophobic and I play the game.

Possibly instead of option to remove them maybe an option for them to appear as something else to this player than a jellyfish ?

  • Some posts have been removed. Please respect OP enough to keep the thread on topic.

  • @sairdontis4317

Eh. I have a fairly functional fear of Jellyfish.

    You ever been stung?
IRL, noticing a Jellyfish usually means a swarm and that sucks because you have to swim/paddle out of it.
    Panic
If there is no player affect let us turn it off like rats. It's a visual AFAIK.

I personally wouldn't be affected by player affected Jellyfish. I would just prefer a different visual. Quadrilateral me to death. I'd prefer that 😭

  • @th3-tater I wonder what else could be displayed instead ?

Guess who just got a setting 😂

  • I truly respect phobias, but when it comes to pixels in a fantasy game, what are we doing here? Of all things to prioritize, I can’t tell if this thread is an absolute troll or not.

“a game for everyone is a game for no one”

No suggestion should be mocked, ever. But we do not all win when initiatives are deprioritized to make room for accessibility options that are considered standard world elements.

“a game for everyone is a game for no one”

pretty strong difference between accessibility and design.

In design it's fair to say "adventure sandbox game with risk" Not every design fits every player.

Accessibility is about saying "You like the design of the game and as a community we will do what we can to improve the quality of your experience."

Any community and any environment is only as good as how it treats those that struggle when they are trying to be a part of it all. Can't do everything and can't improve everything but a lot can be done and a lot can be improved.

  • @wolfmanbush I don’t disagree with anything you said
