Open crew matchmaking feedback

  • Dear Sea of Thieves Team

I wanted to provide some personal feedback regarding the Open Crew feature in Sea of Thieves. While I truly enjoy the game, I’ve encountered some challenges with the matchmaking system when trying to join an Open Crew.

I initially got Sea of Thieves to play with a friend who doesn’t game as frequently as I do. As a result, I often find myself playing solo. To enhance the experience, I frequently attempt to join Open Crews, as there’s something incredibly fulfilling about sailing the seas with a full crew, working together to manage the ship, embark on adventures, and share the experience. However, with a few exceptions, my experience with Open Crew matchmaking has been a bit frustrating.

More often than not, I am placed with only one other person who immediately leaves upon realizing they do not have a full crew. This often leaves me in a situation where I either have to solo the game which significantly impacts the cooperative experience that makes Sea of Thieves so enjoyable, or settle being in a random duo. If given the choice between playing solo or being in a duo with a random player who may leave at any moment, I would rather sail alone.

It feels as though the current Open Crew system does not effectively facilitate the kind of teamwork and spontaneous adventures that make Sea of Thieves special. It often seems like the only reliable way to play with a full crew is to already have friends who own and actively play the game. I would love the ability to log in, join a full group of players, and set sail for a session of adventure, making gold together before parting ways. Unfortunately, finding a complete team through Open Crews currently feels nearly impossible.

I truly appreciate the work your team puts into making Sea of Thieves an incredible and immersive experience. I hope that improvements can be made to the Open Crew matchmaking system to better support players who, like me, are looking for a fully crewed experience with new people.

  • IMO they should make an in game LFC system, or maybe in tandem have an LFGuild system where you can make LFC posts (outside of or inside of the game) for that guild that also notifies people you're looking to play

  • I am placed with only one other person who immediately leaves upon realizing they do not have a full crew.

Yup, not many of us want to be in a Galleon that isnt already Full. Or open mic...or already started doing voyages.

I would love the ability to log in, join a full group of players, and set sail for a session of adventure, making gold together before parting ways.

    Looking For Group sounds perfect.

  • Shady, are you in the SoT community discord? There are many looking for players, just find something you're interested in, and join!

  • For me, the biggest issue with opening up crew matching options is. Voice communication is not possible.
I come from a non English speaking country.
I noticed that there is one option in the settings: translate other players' language chat.
    My setting is: Enable.
However, I have never seen this feature have any effect. I have never seen other players' voice messages translated into my native language.
I don't know if this feature can only translate other languages into English.
I have submitted a support report before, and they only replied to me: they are investigating.
It has been six months now.
At the same time, there is a particularly bad aspect to opening up crew members.
The captain has no control over his own ship.
    Pirate equality is a joke.
Assumption: You set sail on a two masted sailboat.
Because no one is currently joining, you are sailing for certain tasks. Obtained some spoils of war.
When you are preparing to happily sell the spoils of war.
Joined two crew members. They decided to play PVP.
You disagree because your loot has not been sold yet.
They can activate PVP without your consent.
They don't care about the spoils you've worked hard to obtain.
If you clearly tell them. You do not agree to participate in PVP, OK, You should always pay attention to your boat. When you approach any island, they may carry explosive barrels onto your boat to blow it up.
Or they could burn your ship with fiery shells. They can even lock you up.

  • In the 5 years I've been playing Sea of Thieves (it'll be 5 years on April 1st), I've spent a lot of time in Open Crew.

    • I like to play solo, or at least in peace and quiet (so not necessarily talking - writing suits me).
    • I particularly enjoy playing with several different people.

I've experienced the best and the worst of Open Crew, but if there's one thing that's sorely lacking on this game, a game that requires near-perfect coordination between players, I'm surprised there's no matchmaking by language.
I don't speak English, I understand it and I can write it (just about), but I'd really like it if when I launch an Open Crew, the players who are with me SPEAK the same language as I do. - I've had everything (Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, Danish etc...) I'm not multilingual lol.

  • Why not try recruiting more regular players instead of relying on randoms to join? There's always people looking for regular crews in the recruiting section of this forum or on the SoT discord?

  • @captdirtyoar If Discord is the solution to everything, why create an open crew?

Many players don't and won't go on Discord for whatever reason, but that's no excuse to prevent them from playing one way or another.

I speak from experience, the open crew needs to be reviewed.

It isn't the solution for everything which is why I mentioned this forum also.

Seriously though, complaining about random players is a easily solved issue. Find regular players instead!

If you did find some good players in open crew in the time you have been playing it, did you ask them to join your guild? did you add them as a friend in xbox etc? If not you are missing out.

It's not so much the random players we're talking about here, but rather the current matchmaking system of the open crew. And as far as I'm concerned, I have lots of friends (Discord) with whom I play SoT, which doesn't stop me from doing open crew on the side.
