After reading several threads, messing with game settings and background apps, I'm creating this thread to track, report and update this problem. Many players have been having it lately. It greatly diminishes enjoyability of this wonderful game.
The problem:
When accessing the in game radial menus, the game freezes or creates input lag. In my case it mostly causes input lag while everything else appears fine around me. It typically takes about 3-5 seconds from when I open a menu and release it for the item to actually be equipped and the lag to stop. Any input i do during the lag then happens in sequence after the menu closes (like moving, attacking etc.). Moving before opening the menu locks the character in movement until after the menu closes.
Common finds (These were fixes that I could repeat / create over and over again):
- HP Omen application spiking in CPU usage whenever radial menu is opened. (completely closing all of it's processes fixes the issue)
- FPS can be limited to a frame where the problem stops (for me it was 30 and under, which is too low to enjoy the game)
- Toggling radial menu to select instead of release can relieve the symptoms minorly (not a real fix, my guess is the select input closes a loop or something code wise)
Overview of my situation:
I've been playing the game for years but took a break back in season 13 (burning blade), and am returning because I just love the open seas. When I started playing again about a week ago, it only took me accessing the radial menu once to notice this issue and become disappointed, because I've never had this issue before. I'm unsure if it's an HP OMEN Gaming App issue, or a Sea of Thieves issue, because both have been updated. As mentioned, in the past the game has played very well with HP Omen installed, this is a new and trending issue.
Set-up:
(I know, it's a gaming laptop - but it's worked)
Model: HP Omen Gaming Laptop
OS: Windows 11
Processor: 12th Gen Intel 19-12900H
RAM: 16GB
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU
I'm guessing this is some weird interaction between HP omen and SOT, as it's so far the most common find I'm noticing. It's weird how this was not an issue in season 13, and I have no idea why HP omen gaming hub would be registering when I'm opening radial menus or chomping up CPU when I do. It's possible that with higher specs the CPU chomp wouldn't happen. As far as I know I'm locked into having to use OMEN gaming hub CPU muncher, since it's an Omen gaming laptop and I have no other way of controlling all of my fans.
