Just wondering about storms, how do they work?
Obviously stronger winds and huge waves but how else do they adversely effect your ship? Is it a case of the rain just filling up the decks below or is there more tangible damage?
Maybe hull damage or mast/sail damage?
Stormy Weather
@syrio-forel I sailed through two storms in the Tech Alpha, one with my buddy and one solo, so both on the Sloop. The first time with my buddy, we had the wind with us so it was easier. "Huge" waves, (twice as big as normal in game rough seas), lots of rain was filling the ship and then holes started breaking through the hull. He was able to board up while I piloted through. It was an awesome feeling, and he said he even felt a little sea sick below decks.
The second time I went through was solo, it was my last minutes with the Alpha, I had three Rare Chests on board, but I was tired and wanted to go to bed. So I decided to go out dramatically. I went into the middle of the storm and then turned broadside to the waves and raised the sail. The rocking of the ship is pretty impressive, and damage does come quick, it's hard to keep up with solo. Eventually my ship sank and I decided to let my captain go down with the wreck, so my booty and bones were forever lost to the deep... Til the Beta!
Storms can be fairly dangerous for small crews.
Four major things happen in a storm...
-
1 - Steering becomes harder. The waves become so large and powerful that your ship gets pushed in one direction or the other. Meaning it takes more effort to turn your ship against the direction the waves are pushing you. If you let go of the wheel, it will spin out of control to whatever direction the waves are pushing you. Meaning your ship will spin out of control.
-
2 - Lightning will constantly strike the top deck of the boat. This can be dangerous for multiple reasons. Obviously it's lightning and it hurts. It will take a significant portion of your life if it hits you. On top of that it deals knock back when you're hit. So if you're in the crows nest it can knock you out of the nest. If you're steering the boat the lightning can knock you off the wheel which will send the wheel spinning out of control. It can also knock you off the ship if you're near the edges.
-
3 - Rain will constantly fill the bottom decks of your ship while in a storm. It will sink your ship if you do not bail the water out. This can be dangerous not to notice in case you're hull gets holes as it means there will already be extra water in the deck requiring less to fill and sink.
-
4 - Your ship will receive constant damage over time while in a storm. As you enter the storm holes will constantly be punched into your hull until you exit the storm. The dangers of this are being alone and not being able to control the ship and repair the holes at the same time. meaning you could get stuck in a loop of trying to escape the storm and having to let go of the wheel and repair the hull. This also means you're in danger of running out of planks to fix the damage. If that happens you're basically out of luck and will likely sink before you can exit the storm.

@the-lion-turtle You forgot point 5 ;)
- 5 - Sailing throug a storm can be hard as it is see your 4 points but it get even more harder the time the kraken want your life. A kraken during a storm is the most dangerous thing you can be killed of by the game.
