Loot Boxes

  • I don't want to create a discussion regarding gaming ethics, or whether people see them as a good or bad thing.

I simply wish to know if this game will include any randomised loot system that can be purchased with RL monies, cosmetic or otherwise?
To be clear, this does not include any specific items that may be available through RL money transactions.
It only applies to a system of purchasable loot crates, keys, engrams , or whatever you want to call it, where there is some sort of random outcome.
Perhaps one of the devs could chime in and clarify?

    Thanks Danny.

  • @toidiboy There has been no word on purchasable cosmetics using an in-game system, however, the team at Rare have publicly stated their dislike at how their competitors have used loot boxes in their games. This was brought up towards the end of the progression stream and answered more eloquently than I.

  • No specifics have been mention in regards to the micro-transaction/loot box scheme and likely will not be addressed until closer to release. We have asked about this before on the forum but did not receive an answer.

  • I agree with the Rare Devs on this one.
Loot boxes with random loot that can be duplicated are such a rip off, and essentially exploited by game companies. I don't want to pay for something only to get an item I already have or one I didn't want. If I am purchasing something, I want what I want. However, directly buying a unique skin that I want for a small fee to support devs, I can support, because they've said they plan to continue to update and evolve the world in SoT, and need money to do so since they won't rely on subs. But then, they also have their merch store that will also help with that.

  • I will totally make it my life goal to sink your ship if you purchase from loot boxes given if it is provided in the game. I don't want to be sailing and see this shiny golden ship that someone invested $500 into along with weapon upgrades. Tired of using the blunderbuss? Here is an automatic shotgun with a silencer for $10.

  • @rogueaxel

I can almost guarantee you will not see a silenced automatic shotgun in this game.

  • @musicmee yeah, I dont want that. I dislike that in other games as well!!

  • I'm not a fan of micro transactions however if DLC is released and new weapons are included in said DLC I won't mind paying for the content to support the devs. Rare seem to have a completely different approach compared with game makers of today.

  • @rogueaxel lol same here. If they do add anything that we have to buy including exra map or content, I will not be pleased

  • @killingcurse1 It would not be good if microtransactions appear. My SoT controller and game and coin would be in the garbage!

  • @rogueaxel DON'T THROW IT.

Just send it to me. I have four children to feet a brother who would appreciate it.

  • I don't think they'll withhold things like maps, and I don't think weapon upgrades will be a thing. They specifically said that everyone would have access to all the same items, and that it would be the appearances that would be different. They want everyone to have access to the same content as far as gameplay, I don't see them making people pay for maps or expansions on maps. They did hint at adding more merch to their store as well in one of their latest podcasts. And a few of them were drinking from SoT coffee mugs...jealous

So I think as far as support, small $1-5 purchases for a cosmetic item or set (golden sword, or jeweled peg leg or something of that nature) as some kind of way to also support the developers would be great. It wouldn't be a forced option and you would get exactly what you paid for. Which would be nice.

And buying merchandise from their store, cause...pirates! Who doesn't want the extra booty? lol

That way they can provide the same content and future additions to the game, to everyone, regardless of whether they could afford the extras. :)

  • There'll probably be special outfit packs we can buy honestly. Cosmetic of course. I can get on board with that.

I don't think they'd be distributed through an RNG lootbox system though.
