The Mermaid System

  • Through playing the scale test with a couple of friends I've noticed players not having much regard for their ship especially if they don't have loot on it and I think the problem with that is because of the mermaid system, those players know that even if their ship sinks they will still be able to spawn back to almost exactly where the ship sank and the biggest problem my friends and I have noticed with this mechanic is the fact that after you sink their ship they can still stay there right next to you and keep pestering you while you may be trying to sell your chests at an outpost or you sunk their ship and are now trying to go for their loot, they will still spawn there to protect it with their mermaid and or just quickly grab the chest and click on the mermaid so it disappears and no one can get it. So my friends and I have came up with a solution that we think will fix a lot of problems with PvP. If you sink a crew's ship they have no more respawns meaning that you are on your last life once your ship sinks and that when your whole crew dies you will then be able to respawn back, and once you and your crew do the game should make you respawn far away at another outpost discouraging the outpost campers if you had destroyed their ship first. Making it so you just have to get rid of the ship and then go after the crew like we think it should be. This will also make your ship more important to have it not sink and to make it so people just can't spawn kill you or nag you with their mermaid. Now not to say the whole mermaid system is bad, I think it is a good idea to have a mermaid spawn when you get separated from you ship or one of your crew members has to run away with the ship in a hurry so that you may not be stranded situations like that but having it be a spawn point is absurd, only your ship should be where you should spawn.

That's all I have to say. It is a great game and still can't wait for it, thank you to anyone that has taken the time to read this! Lets make a difference! #Bemorepirate

  • @sexy-back-jack I like the one life left idea.
I really hate the mermaid as it really takes away a lot from the game. Yes it has it's place within Sea of Thieves for those moments, but I still feel it's abused and takes away a lot more fun that could by going back for crew when they fall overboard.

  • Yeah I know I have mile friends that are holding off on this game until a griefing solution beyond relogging is implemented,or a private server (p2p or otherwise) is allowed. Some people would like to play without constantly having to worry about other players camping you until one of you gets bored and quits.

I like the idea of having the entire party respawm with their ship either in another server shard, or a less populated part of the map for a bit after they have all been simultaneously killed, run out if respawns etc

  • @sexy-back-jack so to clarify, as long as your ship is still afloat then you will spawn on it if killed, or if seperated by X distance then a mermaid will spawn and port you to it?

However, if your ship is completely sunk and you are killed, then the first person to respawn from the ferry during this time will automatically spawn else where with a new ship, which would make the rest of the crew spawn at the new ship?

If this is correct, then I think this would help create a more enjoyable experience as it not only adds some strategic elements towards ones ship, but also helps reduce some issues you mentioned.

  • One thing I've noticed while playing is man overboard means nothing! Playing with friends with voice chat, it was hilarious if someone accidentially went overboard and we were all shouting "drop the anchor" and whatnot to rescue him. This is pointless, we still did it for fun. But it would be great to have in the real game. Though it would be hard to implement when playing with random and someone keep jumping off.

  • @bambam-bm I think in the end if you join the game and the people you're playing with are no fun then its better to leave and rejoin until you do find a good crew. Then you know that when things like this go down you have a good crew to turn around and pick you up.

I've quit a few times till I've found a fun crew and it's not bothered me.

  • Respawn system may need some tweaking, but my advice...be more pirate.

  • i think the mermaid should only be there for when you're stranded on an island and your ship was sunk, as kind of like a "reset" button. takes you back to an outpost with a new ship and you start over. other than that, NO mermaid for falling off the ship. it would force you to play differently, and think critically about trying to board enemy ships with cannons and dumb c**p like that because, if you miss.. you're screwed unless you tell your crew to drop anchor and come back for you, leaving them vulnerable. and getting knocked off by cannons would mean almost certain death. I think as long as at least one crew member is still alive on the ship you can keep respawning there, I'm fine with that. kind of makes the ship to ship encounters feel like an elimination match which i like a lot.

  • I agree with this idea that your whole crew has to die before the ship or any crew members can respawn. I think a bandaid fix to this problem for the time being is simply to just make the mermaid spawn/death timers take longer so instead of 30 second death timers, maybe like 50 or 60 second death timers if anyone catches my drift.

  • @avirex-idyll yes exactly 👍

  • @fonzaye I am totally with you, I'm glad I am not the only one that sees a problem with this

  • @y0ujerk agreed

  • @cwarrick66 mhmm that's what I'm getting at because it seems a lot with the mermaid that people don't really care if they shoot themselves off their ship or accidently fall off cuz they know a mermaid will be there, although like someone said it does serve a purpose, for example if you are stranded on an island and your crew left you I think the mermaid should spawn to take you back to the ship like it does now

  • @irish-xecutor-3 yeah I hope they do something about this issue

  • Thank you everyone for your feedback thus far!

  • YES! Haha I’ve been arguing to support this for days.

Once your ship sinks if you die again you should spawn at the new ship :o there’s no reason that an infinite number of zombie pirates should be able to spawn there and pester you honestly respawning at the mermaid and not your ship shouldn’t ever happen it’s ridiculous

  • @toastywrath So happy to see others abroad me ship!
