Social Island - Social Hub

@ironuzuka I agree with you about no safe zones but there has to be some sort of compromise for the mini games maybe it will be like the fairy

Agreed. As long as it's not a totally new safe zone and merely and added space to the ferry!

  • @ironuzuka a dit dans [Social Island - Social

I mean hell, if we start like this, then I want a Supermario game embedded on my ship and have a way to lock my cabin's door!

That's some really good ideas! Banjo-Kazooie would be more appropriate though.

  • @jetorchidee97 said in Social Island - Social Hub:

The Ferry looks like a good idea but I don't think it would work. While people are on the ferry, there's nobody in the world and the maximum players will be 20 which will likely rarely happen. The idea of an instanced lobby is to keep the game core and its mechanics exactly as it is.
I don't see that social HUB happening at launch, neither in the first months but I believe that with time, the need for a place to meet, recruit, make community events, plan, talk, etc will grow even more and maybe in a year, I hope, it will be there.

    I couldn't agree more.

  • OP has been updated with various shops, merchants and activities. If you have any suggestions to add, feel free. Thanks for all the feedback!

  • Social Hub - a social center of interest, importance, or activity.
Safe Zone - an area within the game to keep players from killing one another.

Please learn your definitions before commenting on a thread and spamming a forum. It's annoying to see someone spamming a thread the same thing just because they don't fully understand how a mechanic could work in a game.
You cry "No Safe Zones" and that Rare has said there won't be any. And no one here is denying the factor of that. This isn't s thread asking for a safe zone. It is a Social Hub, which can be a stand alone feature that has no actual impact on the action of playing the main objective of the game. There are a great multitude of developers that implement Social Hubs into games. And it doesn't split the community, as it is a feature within the game that you, the player, to take part in or not.

(If you care to argue this will split the game, then I'll be blunt in many scenarios. CoD, Halo, Destiny, GoW all have a multitude of game modes and a wide fan base, yet the community plays what it wants, and they aren't split because they do what they want. Forza has a huge community, which aren't split even with the factors of being able to focus on just racing, customizing, or exploring the world, again the community is doing what they want. MMOs use social hubs to allow users to meet one another so they can team up on adventures and take down bosses and other goals, etc. and there are even members of MMOs who don't use the Social Hub feature for meeting people but guess what, they still play the game because it's what they want to do.)
And in addition about splitting the community... To split is to break or cause to break forcibly into parts, especially into halves. Adding a Social Hub Feature as a stand alone feature would not split the community as it would be the individual player's choice to engage in it or not.

All in all. As previously stated Social Hub Feature as a stand alone option in the main menu could in fact help the game as it will allow you to meet other players for objectives and crews. Where as a Safe Zone would be a in game feature that would allow players to flee in hopes of not being attacked.
My argument and point is this I am for a Social Hub feature in Sea of Thieves, I am not for an in game Safe Zone feature.

  • @an-ambassador

Arrrrgh! Well said, seadog! Great post. Thanks for the input!

  • @kinggzanga said in Social Island - Social Hub:

I previously got a lot of support from a wide variety of players, thought it would be good to bring the idea back. My OP in the mega thread; https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/29122/mega-thread-safe-zones/2

To make it clear, I'm not pushing for a safe zone. I am pushing for a social space.

    The Basics
This certain zone in question, would not allow the cashing in of chests or any other trade company missions. Nor would this island allow any chest within its radius, in order to stop people fleeing and camping with loot. This island would strictly be a place for socialising and games. Maybe a great place to buy better cosmetics and a place to trade with other players. Poker to play and bet against other pirates, put your gold on the line in other mini games against players such as blackjack or some creative twists on mini PvP games. Find a crewmate or join one. Just some island or place in which pirates can just kick it back and relax rather than worry if there ship on port is receiving plentiful of cannonballs to the hull.

    How could it be implemented?
As suggested in the topic, having this area as a staging point before setting sail would be hugely beneficial. Catch up on the latest community news, find a crew, crew member or buy a new rare cosmetic at the auction house all before setting sail into the Sea of Thieves! Then having the ability to travel back to the social hub, personally I feel like the ideal way to implement something like this, would be to add an island that players can travel to in order to into the corner of the map. Our very own pirates paradise, a vibrant Tortuga where rival crews can drink grog and new friends can be found. I think there could be so much romance in a place like this, within Sea of Thieves. Once entering its radius it would transition into a mini cinematic, mirroring what is currently in the game when you enter a point of interest, island, shipwreck etc and would read along the lines of 'Port Royal - Pirate Law'. It would then instance you into the port town, whether that be on the current players server with the standard 16 players or as many have suggested, into a seperate server with more players perhaps. Having a system in place in which ships that have been recently damaged are not able enter its radius would be beneficial, in order to stop players fleeing combat. A well lit port city after a long and successful voyage to travel to in order to spend your gold with more exotic cosmetics and purchasables being here etc. Fellow crews docking in the port, customising their vessels with expensive paint along with buying supplies. A crew of fresh faced sailors about to set sail on their first adventure, not after hearing out tips and tricks from the battle scarred pirate they met, DiscoDarren73 first though! The potential is huge.

    Shops/Mini Games/Activities
These are all the suggestions and ideas put forward. Filling this place with unique shops, fun activities and interesting merchants or vendors is paramount for this island. What can be found in the port town?

    Games
Bet and wager gold against other pirates! Receive gleaming gold for beating a mini game.

    1. Poker - wager some precious treasure, trinkets or gold against other pirates. I can imagine the voice chat at this table being very entertaining.
    2. Dice
    3. Blackjack
    4. Boxing - whether you want a good old punch up with a sworn enemy or you're entering a tournament against other grizzled pirates, just make sure you remove that damn hook!
    5. Fishing Tournament - compete against other pirates and experienced fishermen at the dock, who can grab the biggest catch!
    6. Arm Wrestling

    Shops/Merchants
More rare and exotic items for a limited time can be found here, along with a huge array of different shops and interesting merchants!

    1. Bounty Merchant - place gold on a certain nemesis. Famous bounty hunters will be mounted on the walls and tales will be spread far and wide of their legend.
    2. Musician - Eager to learn and perfect more songs or looking for an instrument abit more continental? The musician has a variety of musical instruments and chromatic scales for sale!
    3. Fisherman Shop - All of your rods, tackle, bait, nets, and even books on where to find the best fishing spots can be found right here.

    PvP
Adding a duel mechanic to this place, would be a welcome addition. Simply challenge a pirate to duel, agreeing on an amount of gold for the winner of the duel. It adds more excitement into the place and really gives the feel that PvP players want, of a pirates haven such as Tortuga with fistfights and guns shooting. That way players who are there to browse, buy, socialise, earn a small fortune playing poker and drink grog can do so uninterrupted and those there to cause a ruckus and beat a pirate up for there gold, can go about there business too.

All input and suggestions to further this idea, will be welcomed with open arms. Making this a place for everyone to enjoy. Thanks for reading and safe sailing!

So I like this idea and I dont really feel like reading 7 pages to find out if someone has come up with the same suggestion as me but...instead of a place on the map this could be a selection you could load into like when you are picking your ship, you could have all that stuff listed without the repercussions of the no safe zone people. personally i hate the idea of safe zones but i love the idea of a social hub, just have it be something you load into, seems easier than trying to find a spot and a mechanic for stopping pvp panzies (no offense PvE'ers) and griefers.

  • @an-ambassador pretty much what you said just shorter lol

  • @fraggle13 I had already stated it one time in the thread. Only to come back to see someone spamming the thread that it was a request for a safe zone. Was tired of seeing that done, it's bad taste to continue repeating oneself over and over.

  • @fraggle13

That is the idea, indeed. So the hub would replace the current lobby where you 'set sail'. This means that you can find a crew, socialise, grab some rare new gear or even play some poker all before setting sail. The island on the map simply instances you to the social hub, so if you would like to return to it after setting sail, you can do so.

  • @kinggzanga it shouldn't be connected in any way to the map, that ends up being too much complicated code that could break other codes in the process. maybe from the start menu you could all vote to go to the hub and have your ship despawn and drop any chest you were carrying, but that is about the only way i see it being fair and not attract the no safe zone activists lol

  • @fraggle13

I understand completely where you're coming from and I recognise your point about people mistaking it as a safe zone. I feel as though this is the most immersive way to add a social hub. Voting in the start menu then being beamed out like Star Trek, for a pirate game anyway, sounds out of place in my opinion. However, I'm completely open to whatever method Rare chooses to implement a place like this. Thanks for the feedback!

  • @kinggzanga Works for the brig lol :P

Agreed. Again, thanks for the support and feedback bud!

  • OP has been updated with the additions of some new possible mini games and shops. If you have any suggestions for mini games, shops or merchants that could be found at the social hub, don't hesitate to post. Only 6 more days sea dogs!

  • @jetorchidee97 said in Social Island - Social Hub:

    Sid Meier's Pirates!? Pirateception

It's a new day, sailors. Meaning it's one less day til' release, sea dogs!

  • Glad to see so many people are in support of this. I definitely agree with all of the above. There definitely needs to be a central social hub- somewhere where you start out. Going along with that I think there needs to be a way to join crews with someone during play allowing people to find people in this city for their crew. I also think all of the outposts they currently have feel too empty and that if there was just one main bustling city where everyone started it would help immensely.

Realistically I think they should have started the game there in this city giving you a 10 minute/half hour single player introduction. Maybe you escape from a jail or drunkenly wander around dueling a few pirates while getting the basics of the game down. From there you could find a crew, find a ship and start on your way.

  • Well shucks, I was just coming to the forums to make my first post. I was going to submit an idea for a social zone island. I figured the island could be some kind of Parlay Island, ruled by a Pirate King. All weapons are banned and you would have to resort to fisticuffs, when the pub breaks out into an all out brawl. No death, just getting knocked-out for a few seconds.

Looks like the boxing, drinking games, fishing events and gambling are already here. Would be neat to add some kind of music mini-game to the mix. Along with these games, I was hoping for new Reputation Vendors. Boxing could have new brass knuckle weapons and outfits. Fishing has cool fishing rods, outfits and fishing nets. Drinking games unlock a special magic ship keg that never empties (for Legendary ships). Some new cosmetics for your Legendary Ship, along with new toys for your ship. Oh and Legendary ships are displayed in the Harbor.

An island like this would also be a great way to add social holiday events. Imagine how this island could look for Halloween and "X"-Mas! (see what I did there?) chuckle

    Great post!

  • I thought about this and was looking if someone else already made the thread!

There's no need to make it an island though.
The hub could be outside the map, it would be a safe place to group up before going in!
Also to gamble all our wealth! !

  • @geekster-t

Awesome post! Really productive, fresh ideas being put forward. Happy to receive your support, barnacle beard!

  • @cwonder14

Thanks for the support, sailor! Completely agree with you that a short tutorial would slot perfectly within a place like this. Thanks for the input, bud.

Aye that's what we're suggesting sailor. Good to see you're aboard! Thanks for the input, matey.

  • Me and my ship were just talking about this and it's good to know other people are thinking the same thing!

100% agree we need a social island (not a safe zone to trade in voyages) It should act as a mermaid any loot within it's borders is forfeit so as not to be a place to run to and be safe. We can find other ships to take on Skull Forts and be social. Right now it's too dangerous to be social, so it's shoot first ask questions later.

  • Ahoy there @kinggZANGA,

It seems this thread was locked without a reason posted, so I'll clarify why it was locked. You might recall that I posted this in mega thread when I locked it, I'll expand further.

While your topic does not center around a Safe Zone for the sake of it, it still fundamentally is a safe zone with forced optional PVP. Sea of Thieves is a Shared World Adventure Game, it encompasses both exploration and action play-styles as an emergent aspect of the game.

Many of the discussions around Safe Zones or Peaceful Servers are primarily out of a desire to escape players who are not keeping in line with the Pirate Code and attempting to ruin the fun for others. Be it through harassing behaviour, slurs or just kinda being jerks. We are emphatically against this kind of behaviour and ask that you report it, here's a guide on how to do so.

You raise a lot of good feedback points on other social aspects we could add to the game, and we now have a Feedback category where you can discuss these ideas!
