Can I connect through a New Zealand IP and start at the earliest launch time?

  • I was wondering if there was a rule that forbids us from playing the game through an ip address in New Zealand so that we can start playing today and not tomorrow (I'm in Europe). It seems quite unfair how the launch time is different for different locations and on top of that the game launches at literally the worst possible time for every time zone. I don't get it. Even if my ping is really high due to connecting through New Zealand I would probably still be able to at least chose a good character although I also hope to be able to do a few quests as well.

  • Well, the reason why they do it like this is for performance issues. If everyone rushes the login server at the same time (like blizzard or so), they are obviously not confident they can accomodate the player traffic. they do a spread release to even the flow of players at the cost of "fairness". The advantages of an early boost is somewhat limited in this game as pretty much no advantage is given to early players. I'm guessing that's why they didn't release it everywhere at the same time. I'm guessing there must be some check made on country of origin but maybe not that extensive. so it might be possible to join the servers with the kiwis. However it's not really advisable as, if many people do the same, there will be server bottlenecking and you will be stuck unable to play in a "connecting" window. and that's nowhere near satisfactory for anyone. As this game is not that much based on progress but more on having fun with friend and/or random people, I don't think it's worth the trouble. Just wait for your friends and your time zone and have fun with them.

  • From what I gather, nobody has checked ( Or at least mentioned ) if using a VPN to gain earlier access is 'allowed' or not, but that due to the way Microsoft store works it wouldn't work as the unlock time is locked to where you bought the game, not what region you are currently in.

For instance, a US purchase of the game would not unlock until the US time, despite you changing your IP to NZ.

Changing your IP and purchasing a game in a different currency can get you in a lot of trouble, just in case anyone thought "But what if I purchase it with a VPN?"

  • You had to buy the copy through the NZ Micro-store, set your device to appear as you are a new Zealand resident, etc.

Done this me’self, and here I am ;]

  • I guess we'll know in a hour or so.

  • @yoirgl well they have different servers for the different regions so the servers will not be that overcrowded if everybody joins at the same time. Maybe the only problem will be with the money and leveling system since as far as I know they keep all that info on the same server. Also none of my friends have that game and I'm not going to waste my time with random players I already did that mistake during the beta once and I'm not doing that again.

  • @platypuserotica W*F?!?!? That can't be true. I bought it in England in Pounds and if I can't play it when it's the 20th here in Eastern Europe that would be the so stupid.

  • @yoirgl yeah :D

  • @svetli97
No one's forcing you to play, no matter the time of release :)
As a matter of fact, none of my friends also bought the game (too expensive). I just joined a group of people speaking my language i found on the "find a crew" section of this very forum :)
cheerio, see you at sea, maybe. may the best pirate win.

  • @svetli97 That's just what I've read on the forums. It could be wrong or it could be right... why do I want to burst in to a Billy Joel song suddenly?
