Rare, what stops you from adding hundreds of sails icons?

  • Sea of Thieves was all about being unique but it's really hard to pull off when over 1 million players have access to the same few sails and livery options. Rare, I know that you have your priorities, but it kinda blows my mind that there are so few options available. I'm at the office now, drawing detailed vector icons for a web app and in the past hour, I had 6 of the completed with all the required files. Having some experience in UE4, I can tell it's not that hard to add new options. So, what gives? I ain't judging, but having 1 artist do it for a day would result in 30 or so more sails to choose from. The only goal in SoT is obtaining customization items, so I'd expect to be overwhelmed by the number of options available.

  • Only Rare knows for sure... I think the least we all expected was a ton a variety in cosmetics. I went in thinking we’d get a basic custom emblem creator too... Silly me.

  • @captain-surgee It's bizarre, it would be very easy to offer a wide range of patterns with then full RGB options for each element of the design. The emblem maker in Fortnite is more advanced than this... It's the same with the figureheads too, only 4 meshes is a joke, yeah I know modelling is more work but really 4 options (with 2 colour choices) is pathetic.

  • It could be they were focused on mechanics, world graphics, over hauling, and various other things my sleep deprived brain can't think of right now. I don't know how big RARE is, but if they have that add up still, it can't be all that big, and they have a lot on their minds. Things slipped through the cracks that they didn't expect, when the things they did expect got out of hand quick. Perhaps they wanted launch to go as smoothly as possible, so instead of adding things that would break the game more, they prepared themselves with what they already had.

This is all speculation of course. It could all be a ploy to get as much money as possible before Microsoft cans the lot of them (I certainly hope not though)

I imagine they have limited the number of customisation items at this time for a few reasons.

    1. To focus on getting the game ready for release/trouble shooting issues immediately post launch. As you have demonstrated it doesn't take that long to create designs for things like flags in the grand scheme of things but I imagine it's all hands on deck (if you will excuse the pun) getting the game ready for launch and then fixing the initial issues.

    2. Because progression is essentially acquiring new cosmetics by staggering the release of new cosmetic items there will constantly be new things people wish to obtain. If there are 10 items available then people will unlock maybe 1 or 2 they really want, then when another 10 become available they will likely do the same. If they release 100 at once then people will still probably only work towards getting the 1 or 2 they want so by doing smaller releases of cosmetics they are stopping people from burning through the cosmetic items that they want. I've probably explained that poorly but hopefully you get what I mean.

  • @mr-chernobyl I have a weird feeling that there's some creative director in charge that needs to find a poetic meaning in every single item added to the game, thus blocking it from having loads of options. Emblem creator from 11 years old Halo 3 would be enough, but I'd also be happy if we'd just get a flood of premade sails and liveries...just give me some options!! I don't wanna grind for weeks just to look like every other pirate crew. It's pointless.

  • Do Rare staff ever respond on these forums? I feel like this is a perfect post for them to let us know. We are disappointed and we believe it’s should have been easy to implements dozens more designs. If it’s not easy then please fill us in so we can accept it.

  • @captain-surgee Thought this was a bit strange myself. Could only imagine they held them back to be pushed out gradually in small updates.

    Here's to hoping!

If this thread gets enough activity they will probably respond. They are probably very busy dealing with the issues from launch and working on the patch for early next week so I imagine that means they have less time to respond on the forums so they are probably only going to be doing things on the forums where they feel they really need to like huge threads.

Releasing 10 options every few months or so is not a good approach as well. Once the new 10 sails will be released, everyone will jump on new designs to look for something fresh and at the end, we'll all look the same again. Releasing 50 a month? That could work, but seeing how now there's like 5 unique ones, it's probably not gonna happen. It's nothing more than a simple icon though. I can't express enough how easy it is for a skilled designer.

  • The thing with customization is that it's not just customization, it's recognition. Sure there could be a bit more selection, but I'd be very surprised if they don't give us some more options in future updates.

I imagine everyone's magic number of what is the right amount is going to vary but there is a reason businesses add extra options over time and in a way the situation you have described would probably benefit Rare because it would keep people hungry and keep them buying new customisation options because they keep wanting to look different.

It's like say Nintendo. They used to release a new colour or limited edition design for their portable consoles every say 6 months. If they released them all at launch then people would just buy 1. If they stagger then people buy at launch but might re-buy when a newer design they like more is released and that can continue indefinitely.

I know it's not exactly the same but that logic still applies here.

Either way I'm not saying what Rare will do and what is right or wrong for them or for us, just trying to explain the likely logic in the relatively limited number of cosmetic options currently available. 1) Dealing with launch. 2) Keeping demand high.

i think the 1st major patch will add tons of new cosmetic to the game.
    I BELIVE :O !

  • @fat-petti Let's hope! It sucks it wasn't here at the release tho. Have you guys seen metacritic? It's a disaster =/ I'm sure if there would be more things to look forward to it would turn out much better. kind of makes me sad because I was bragging about this game to everyone for years.

  • Just to further expand and possibly explain better.

If Rare release 100 sails I will likely pick the 1 I like the best and get that and that's it. So they put the work in to making 100 of something and I have only bought 1, so 99% of their time was a waste (in the case of me).

If Rare release 10 sails I will likely pick the 1 I like the best and get that and that's it. Now it's only 90% of their time that was a waste (again in the case of me). But if they release another 10 sails then again I will likely pick the 1 I like.

I'm not saying what is right or wrong or what they will do but obviously Rare will want a return on their investment, it works out better value for them to release a limited number of options relatively frequently than release a huge number of options all at once.

  • Adding a load of icons really shouldn't create a concern for breaking the game. The sails currently in are clearly made up of a few layers as you can see the same dirt layer on a few of them. Allowing players to make their own combination of those layers, with many more emblem options, should be very simple.

Personally I would add a Tailor NPC who would "make" your custom designed sail. Want to go further? Maybe make it that you need to get certain items to get certain colours, lobsters for red, maybe make purple really hard as it's very rare in nature which is why it's often in the clothes of royalty.

But no, we get a handful of basic designs, even though Rare themselves said they want ship to be unique and players to be identifiable by their ship.

Its not a disaster i think becase i still didn't see any ship with cosmetic and have only 60k gold on mine Fat Petti :D and first thing i want to buy is - Sails, so everyone know from who to run from :D
So its some sort of hardcore mode for game start :)
    Yeah im staying positive :D
