This game is not a PvP game (at least it's not, and shouldn't be, the focus)

  • I've seen posts of people complaining about the PvP and wanting large rewards or stuff for heavy PvP. I understand where they're coming from, but this isn't the game for it.
This game is a PvE centered game with PvP. Most of the crew to crew interaction in this game shouldn't be fire on sight or chase each other for hours.

A great example is from my friends encounter at a fort, they had teamed up with another crew and together they took down a third ship that was after the fort, after sinking them and clearing the fort the other ship that had teamed up with my friends turned on them and tried to take them down to claim all the loot for themselves.
They failed as my friends sunk them and claimed all the loot and sailed off. A wonderful mix of PvE focused gameplay with PvP. They knew that there was a lot of loot to gain if they turned on my friends, they failed but they didn't just see a ship on the horizon and bee line towards in hopes that that ship had more than just a couple castaway chests.
So PvE took the focus but the opportunity for a larger haul came from PvP. (and doesn't that whole exchange sound like the best pirate story you've ever heard)

On the same token the PvE wouldn't be the same if PvP wasn't there. I wouldn't be scanning the horizon for other ships. I wouldn't be as anxious on the final island in my
2-3 voyage journey hoping that another ship doesn't come up on me while I'm on the island and steal my loot or sink my ship while it's docked.
Fort Raids would feel more lackluster as it's just a matter of killing skeletons and not worrying about the rest of the ships on the server that want that large haul. PvP is really the reason I personally don't try and clear a fort solo or in a duo and that's fine.

tl;dr I feel like in this game you should be doing PvE as your focus and find opportunities here and there to PvP, but this game should not be about just going out and hunting people down, and really people who come to this game to only PvP are going to be disappointed.

  • It isn't a PvP game and I don't know why or how people thought it was advertised as such.

PvP is a thing that you can do in this game, but it is not the thing to do in this game.

  • It's a PvE and PvP game.

Both sides are underdeveloped, but PvP is at least dynamic and exciting, which is why people gravitate towards it.

  • It's not a PvE game, either, though. The PvE experience is bare bones at best and PvP is woven into the foundation of the game. It's largely what drives the challenge. The PvE is actually there to encourage players to fight one another. That's why reputation and gold are earned when you turn things in and not when you complete a voyage. It's why you're left defenseless when you're carrying quest items and why they are visible on your person and don't go into your inventory. These are all carefully considered decisions made to facilitate and encourage player altercations in game. No, it's not the ONLY thing you can do, and you absolutely can avoid encounters and focus on the PvE elements if you wish, but PvP is still a major component that makes the game what it is. Having that looming threat when you get that big haul is a major aspect of the game.

@sorenthaz It is cause, my dear friend. There have been others defending the game with it's a PvP game. And I also think that the way it is built attracts that to itself. 4 man squads. The most popular online games now on console are all 4 man squad fps constant combat game. People see that and go boom. Okay 4 man squad stuff. Lets go.

And then you have people who see that and go oh man 4 man co-op with online multi-player? It's gonna be like Vermintide/L4D etc, but with pirates!

They never really have a clear set of what their game is. And I like that, but they have to make it prominently clear of the World PvP that is everywhere. And I just don't think they did a very good job of broadcasting it.

Also given the minimalistic and repetitive nature of the PvE content, PvP becomes the filler to try and only real dynamic thing in the game. So I can see why people lean on PvP even if I don't agree with it, and it's ultimately Rare's fault that they pushed this game out without more than a few gameplay loops beyond PvP.

  • Worst part of the PvP in my experience, is that it is only done correctly at the skull forts.

Most of the game people just look for others to fight with no real care for in-game gains from it. The people who are so bored with the core/PvE side of the game and just look to create excitement in PvP just for the sake of it (again meaning not for any loot/rep gains), are the people who probably should just bow out and go play something that isn’t as ‘boring’ and is actually more combat focused.

  • @ersatz-nihilist
Which is why as the PvE content develops and we get more to do the PvP will develop naturally along side.

  • @drakebg757
Which I believe is the biggest problem of the game, not enough PvE. As the PvE grows the PvP will become grow naturally along side it. PvP opportunities will become a more natural part of your play cycle instead of just to fill time or out of boredom.

  • Funny, the developers, you know the ones who make the game and decide what it is about, disagree.

From the about page: Exotic islands. Hidden treasures. Riddles, battles and shanties. The essential pirate experience.
Sea of Thieves is a new type of multiplayer game that delivers all you need to live the free-roaming pirate life. Whether adventuring as a group or sailing solo, you'll encounter other crews... but will they be friends or foes, and how will you respond?

Seems like PvP was pretty intended from the getgo here, nowhere does it advertise a carebear existence.
