Games are becoming services/subscriptions.

  • I have high hopes for SoT. I'm also glad I did not buy the game. I am glad they are bringing more content, because that is my biggest concern at the moment. I am just upset that large game developers think that releasing the bare minimum is okay. I don't want to wait until Dec. 2018 until there are finally enough things to keep me busy and entertained. And sorry if I am not like the rest of you that feel that doing the same things over and over again is entertaining. I do not like being required to wait to get the game that should have been at launch. The content video is great and all, but I am done waiting. I waited a year for things to improve on FOR HONOR, and I'm still waiting. I'm done waiting for games to be the full version. I am not buying game services or subscriptions, I'm buying, or would have bought a $60 game. There are many games that are worth the $60 dollars and the content that comes later is just a bonus, where in recent games, the content that comes later, brings the game up to par with other games that had the content from the beginning. It is sad in my mind that games have devolved into services and subscriptions. I don't buy a lot of games, and try to find games that will entertain me all by themselves. This is not the case for SoT. I will attempt to play SoT at the end of the year and maybe then it will be what I was hoping launch would have been. Again, I.m glad they are moving forward with more content, but I'm really tired of waiting on games. I think they should have just pushed the launch back to Sept. and released all this content with the game. Very happy it is on games pass. Then I can just come back later and see if the game is up to par, instead of feeling regret that I paid $60 to wait for content.

  • See this is an appropriate and mature way to handle the game’s lack of content.

  • What a genius revelation. It's totally not like Games-as-service as a concept have been around longer than Sea of Thieves has been in development.

    Oh. Wait.

    Oh. Wait.

It's not a good thing in my opinion.

Too bad. Games-as-services have been around since the first Pre-EverQuest online dungeon crawlers. Keep in mind it was even worse back then. You had to buy the game, pay a subscription fee, and purchase all future major expansions.

Sea of Thieves' game-as-service model involves a one-time purchase, then all future content is free. There will be optional cosmetic-only microtransactions, but that will be the extent of it.

  • @blam320 Right on. I don't enjoy waiting on content. Probably why I have not played those games.

Then I must ask why you're still here. Clearly games-as-service isn't your cup of tea, and yet you've come to these forums complaining about a game we've known would have regular content updates, and eventually microtransactions, since before the Final Beta.

Things aren't going to change because one smuggler is having trouble with imperial regulations. And unfortunately for you, there's no rebellion for you to join.

  • IMO "games as a service" these days is just a marketing scheme to cover ones butt legally so they can sell you the bare minimum and get away with it while raking in the maximum profit. A.K.A. early access titles sold at AAA prices by major companies such as Rare/Microsoft.

Overwatch and Subnautica would like a word with you.

Just putting in my 2 cents before I head out. I just don't think they should have charged people $60. It feels a lot like a free to play model and if it was, I would not be making this thread. I think game prices should reflect the game correctly, and in this case, SoT did not do that. $60 to wait for content is not right to me. If it is right for you then cool, but I think other feel the same as me.

You gave your two cents weeks ago. And yet you're still here.

So much for getting out, eh? You're not convincing anyone, save for the few die-hards in the "this game sucks" crowd, to jump ship.

The price reflected the game, and have you not seen what content we're getting by mid-summer?

Take care of yourself then. I suppose it's what your best at.

  • @blam320 I'm glad you feel this strongly about the game. Games need strong followings. Have fun. I'll see you at the end of the year.

  • @captain-soio personally i see this from the other side, and i will use R6:S as an example, that game launched very differently to what we see today, the core remained the same but they kept adding to it, how many developers would have released sequel 1 or maybe 2 in that timeframe? Instead you paid one price with all content free forever with added microtransactions to (rightfully) further support the devs, for me personally games as a service is the ‘right’ way to release a game, release a skeleton and flesh it out, instead of releasing a half a***d game and only adding changes in a sequel, would you rather buy SoT2 next year or pay one price and have everything (over time)?

One more thing before you go. Remember that parsecs are units of distance, not time.

Nice. A lot of people get that wrong, and I like to explain to them that Solo got closer to black holes to complete the Kessel Run, meaning a shorter distance. Thanks for the Star wars reference.

No prob. I look forward to how Star Wars explains the physics of getting so close to a Black Hole's gravity well without getting yanked out of Hyperspace and promptly atomized by the tidal forces (assuming stellar-mass black holes, not supermassive/galaxy-mass).

  • @captain-soio

That's the funny thing about games as a service... they need a player base to stick around to justify releasing more content updates (free or otherwise).

Whenever someone has voiced a concern over lack of content, or expresses their difficulties with pvp, or toxic playerbase situations, they are always told to leave and play another game.

I have already seen several people stop playing, including many of my friends, and I worry, will there be enough people left for Rare to continue updating for years to come?

I hope that they release a lot of good and balanced content soon, and I hope that you come back to play the game!

  • Games are becoming services?

Did you just wake up from a 20 year long nap?

That ship has sailed a long time ago.

  • @drakebg757 there should not be a designated way or method of handling a game's shortcomings. If the game was perfect then the community would not need a mature way of vocalizing their frustrations. When I go to a restaurant and my steak is under-cooked, what's the best method for vocalizing my anger? A good chef prepares a good steak the way his customer intends for it to be served. A good game developer does the same. If the steak isn't ready it's simple leave it in the oven longer. Video games expect us to shut up and accept their lack of quality control well there isn't another industry that continuously over-promises and under provides the way video games do. It's truly saddening and I blame whoever created the Paid DLC and the Micro Transaction for moving us towards a system that rewards incomplete games being released too soon and having to pay for said game like a gaming subscription then 12 months later they release a newer bastardized version of the game too soon once again and the player base for that 1st game dissipates and it leaves the 1st game virtually pointless. If you're going to release a rapidly evolving game like SOT which is (lets face the music) INCOMPLETE; Sea of Thieves 2 better not come out for years so we all have an opportunity to experience this game completed before they divert their attention towards another fixer upper.

  • Games as service/subscription is required for games to grow, particularly in the case of multiplayer.

Running and maintaining servers costs money.

Creating new content means paying developers and artists money to create that content.

Nothing else in the world works like that, why should software? You wouldn't take a car you bought 6 months ago back to the dealer and expect them to just give you leather seats and a new GPS for free would you?

The only thing that they shouldn't charge for is bug fixes to the current game. Expecting anything else is delusional and unrealistic.
