Legendary/ Dreaded Pirate, Pirate Names, etc

  • I have a few fun ideas that I feel would really add a nice level of immersion to the game. It would also stop toxic players from rage/spam messaging you for defeating them/ taking their plunder.

I'll start off with Pirate Names. Instead of our gamertags being revealed, it can be a name we chose for our pirate avatars. For instance, my pirate name is Lead Belly. So instead of my gamertag, it would say "Lead Belly" followed by my chosen title. The only way others could see your gamertag is by the make a friend emote. This would be a feature for both your crew (if they're not already your friend on xbox or pc) and other crews. It would also make your pirate more personable to you because you gave them a name. This would also add a cool level of Roleplay for those who like to Roleplay.
Another idea I have is ship names! Now, I know a lot of people have come up with this idea, and Rare may indeed implement it, but how about also adding to it a message on screen when you're sunk? Say, if I sunk an enemy ship, it would pop up on that crews' screen a message that says "you were sunk by The Forsaken Legacy and its crew."
I would love to see that. That would also add a level of rivalry that could make for some awesome PvP moments when you see that very ship upon the waves.
Lastly, I propose a title as great as Legendary, but opposite to it that would indicate whether or not a pirate follows the pirate code.
Legendary could be the title for those who DO honour the pirate code.
And Dreaded could be the title for those who do not honour the code. It would show who plays ruthlessly and who may be more of a friendly player. This wouldn't mean that Legendary pirates are pirates who refuse to PvP, this would just mean their whole goal isnt to just mercilessly destroy any and all they see upon the waves, and steal their hard earned treasure.
What say you to these ideas? And what ideas do you have that would be fantastic to add in game?
Please, by all means, share your feedback and ideas!

I'd really like to hear people's opinions on this and to hear their own ideas.

  • I've suggested pirate names and ship names in the past, as well. Sea of Thieves is a game that has a strong role-playing feel to it, and I'd love to have the option to name my pirate as well as my ship at some point. Having more customization options would also be very welcome.

Your idea for a dreaded pirate is very interesting and could work, as well. However, aren't all pirates dreaded? ;) There'd be no reason for a dreaded pirate, would there not?

  • @ak-harleyhavok YES! I've been saying that Exactly, there needs to be a morality system. Love the Dreaded Pirate Idea.

  • I have posted this before but I really think we need a pirate reputation that is based on how we interact with each other and the environment. A metric that determines how pirate we really are.

I think this would be something that would add a lot to us being a pirate, a true gauge of how “pirate” we really are. The title could show next to our gamer tag, this would give players an idea of how dangerous or safe a fellow pirate is.

Reputation Meter – This is a metric based on how you treat your fellow players and other NPC characters, treat them bad, ie kill them, and your reputation goes down. Help other players or NPC’s and your rep will go up. Simple, but this will affect everything you do in game and may affect what vendors you can get missions from. This will not compete with your Pirate Legend reputation. This is strictly measuring how “Pirate” you really are.

    Honorable-100 level
    Famous-80 level
    Trustworthy-60 level
    Respectable-40 level
    Good-20 level
    Pirate-0 level, where you start
    Bad-minus 20 level
    Dangerous-minus 40 level
    Ruthless -minus 60 level
    Infamous-minus 80 level
    Cutthroat-minus 100+level

The Cutthroat level has no bottom, the worse you are the lower your point level can go. That is to make it more difficult to get your reputation back to the top if you are a real bad pirate. You have to do a lot of good to undo the bad.

  • To add to this... What if your reputation varied across each outpost? You could be a hero on one outpost and be regarded as a monster at another. And what if none of the trading companies got along? What if doing too many Gold Hoarders quests will hurt your reputation with the other companies? This could add more pirate types and reputations. For example, you can be a good Pirate from Daggertooth, or a respectable Trader from Sanctuary, a Ruthless Gold Hoarder, etc...

Make the end game very difficult to get to. Then only the greatest pirates can earn Legend/Reaper title.

Too expand on your point about the outposts, this was from a post I made a while ago that tied to the reputation.

Ports – create 4 ports on the map and these would be hubs for commerce and additional vendors and they can be plundered by player pirates
Settlement - 2-3 beach cannons, little larger than an outpost, no organized militia, very little wealth or treasure to obtain if plundered, easy difficulty
Town – 5-6 cannons small wall on beach, more buildings, more supplies, small garrison, medium treasure and wealth if plundered, moderate difficulty
City – 6-8 cannons, fortified wall, larger buildings, large amount of supplies, medium garrison of militia, may have a military ship in the harbor, very wealthy and large treasure to obtain if plundered, hard difficulty
Fortress, 10-12 cannons, set on a hill, draw bridge entrance, large garrison of militia, fortified walls, may have one or more ships in the harbor, extreme wealth and treasure if plundered, extreme difficulty, will require a team of pirates to plunder

These ports are accessible if you are a pirate in good standing in your reputation, if not you may be attacked, if you have a bad enough rep like Cutthroat, you would be attacked on sight. Governors oversee the ports and will be a vendor to obtain missions from. These ports will help create a perpetual economy, if a port is plundered they may require supplies and the merchant vendor will then have these missions to deliver supplies and materials for players to do. Put a 30-45 min timer after a port is plundered to prevent campers.
