Grog? Why is this useful?

  • I keep meaning to post this question and then forgetting: What, if anything, is the beneficial status of being drunk in SoT? The whole grog and mug feature seems like a significant part of this game. But other than being dizzy and wobbly what is the point of this?

Are you tougher in battle or something?

  • ive been curious if this will surmount to something as well. Drunken bar fighting arena would be so dope.

  • @snail-s***n you can catch the puke in a bucket and throw it on enemies to blind them. also its fun.

  • @snail-s***n It's good practise for when you get your first chest of 1000 grogs,, takes a lot of practise to walk with one of those chests. lol

Yeah but to get drunk enough to do that you have to be really messed up yourself making any battle benefit seemingly negated.

Do it prior to battle and just hold the bucket in your inventory.

  • @deadwerds you can get drunk pre battle and keep the puke bucket. it doesnt go away. you get one shot to blind someone.

  • my buckets always full of water in case i board a ship and it just need a little nudge to sink. and the puke bucket can never wait that long, my friends always seem to catch it before we see an enemy haha

Fair enough. I will think about pre-preparing for battle that way in the future.

However, that doesn't really seem like an "intended" use practice of the feature as a whole.

Rare went through all the trouble of putting kegs on every boat, all kinds of cosmetic mug upgrades, implementing the drunken controls and visuals, special chests that let you fill your mug as well as make you drunk while carrying it, and yes the vomit bucket thing. Just seems to me that the vomit bucket is just one small bit of a much larger reaching feature.

Just wondered if there was some benefit to it such that having one on the boat all the time was a more logical thing.

Wooden Planks: Check - fix your boat. need it all the time
Cannon Balls: Duh - need those for sure
    Bananas: Yep. Healing needed constantly.
Vanity Chest: Cool I can change my clothes
    Equipment Chest: Makes sense
keg of grog: so I can goof around and get drunk when not in port? huh? why such a major feature of my boat?

  • The random movements that are part of being drunk make it hard for players to shoot you from far away.

  • Drinking Grog before taking the wheel on choppy water will smooth out the rocking, and chugging grog after being bit by a snake will cancel the poison effects, but then you’re drunk, so go jump in the water!

  • I actually find being drunk pretty useful when in PvP, especially when being boarded. Your random movements make it hard for you to be hit, but also hard to hit in return which is always annoying.

  • @deadwerds Just like most of the rest of the game its just there to facilitate players engaging and having fun with other players.

  • @deadwerds "Fun"

  • I can't believe no one has brought up the effects of Grog on you when playing a musical instrument. I find that when all is lost, as any good captain should, I go below to the bottom of my ship as it slowly drowns into the ocean. I drink a full mug of grog and proceed to play my accordion with some of the worst key changes and missed notes ever heard. Try it!

  • I think it’s just supposed to be fun and pirates like to drink so having grog in a pirate game it would be silly not to have it. Whether it’s combat advantageous or not sonetimes it’s fun just to fool around, I’ve boarded enemy boats totally drunk (or failed to) a number of times. And yeah, there’s the weaponizing vomit aspect if you want to try that.

This isn’t some super serious competitive game. It’s about having fun and providing people with the tools to do all sorts of things whether it’s advantageous or not.

  • It doesn't have any actual use as far as I know. But every pirate needs to get drunk every now and then :P

  • @deadwerds No, it's just for fun. :)

And I don't see them adding any benefits either as that could be seen as promoting drinking, which may affect the game's rating in certain areas.
