Raise the sails!?

  • So if i emote in german "Hisst die Segel" it translates to "raise the sails" wich would be defenitly correct on a smaler type of ship where u set sails by pulling them up the mast but how is it in the game... there are only shiptypes where u have to let the sails drop down. is raise the sails still correct and just widely missunderstood or did the devs a mistake?
    u raise your kids and u raise a flag and both times u are growing something... but u also raise the anker. why is english so inaccurate?
    and what is the correct sentence...
    and why did the devs this to us
    plz stop doing the wrong thing if i emote!!

  • Either you raise the sail or you set them...
    My german language is bad, but hisst is the same as raise.. or am i wrong?

  • @thealcani Willkommen in der Welt der Sprachen..Übersetzungen sind selten wortwörtlich möglich...viele Worte aus dem Englischen haben mehrere Bedeutungen auf Deutsch und umgekehrt, das hat nichts mit ungenau zu tun, du musst auf den Kontext achten...und überhaupt bist du mit diesem Thema auf anderen Seiten/Foren besser beraten...gibt sicher Seiten die dir das besser näher bringen können

  • Raise means to lift up to a higher position. Not the action, but the consequence. So the sails go up and the anchor goes up to a higher position. As for the kids, if you raised them properly then they will also go to a higher position (metaphorically)

    @XKLIX You are thinking of hoist. Heist is like a bank robbery

  • @xklix "hisst" is "hoist" in english, but yes, it means to raise the sails

  • yes in german it means pulling a flag or a sail up the mast wich is the same as setting the sails

    in english it should be the same and thats why the translation ingame is directly to raise... wich means set the sails. but sadly i cant find it in english what it rly means in nautic language. in german its setting sails even if u lower the sail because its a different ship type.

    this is the language of the sea! its Hissen and raise! not set or pull!
    go the the Marine and tell the guys to pull up the ... you go overboard right away!
    its a other language

    the Ship type is SS , or i dont get your question

  • i cant find "raise sails" in any nautic english dictionary ... so plz send me evidence what it rly means

  • @thealcani No in this game if you say raise the sails, people are going to lift/raise them into the default position.

    Lower sail to drop to full sail and set sail to catch the wind.

    no wrong, my game is in german. if i say "Hisst die Segel" wich is equal to set sails it translates directly to "raise the sails" so many ppl understand the opposite from what iam saying and if i say "holt die segel ein" wich is 100% clear in german it translates to "lower the sails" wich is again understood as the opposite of what i said.

  • @thealcani They should write "Hisst die Segel!"/"Hoist the sails!" and "Refft die Segel!"/"Reef the sails!" and add some icon as indicator, so they can avoid this "raise sails means pull them up" misconception entirely.

  • @personalc0ffee With my crew I speak entirely with the real naval term in french. The first week it was a bit hard but now everybody understand it well and it's even much easier like that because it's more specific.

    @thealcani In french :

    • "up the sails" = "Hissez les voiles"
    • "drop the sails" = "Amenez les voiles" or "Affalez les voiles" if you need it fast.
  • I think the actual nautical term for sails is furled, or completely retracted, and unfurled for deployed for sailing.

  • @personalc0ffee sagte in Raise the sails!?:

    Hoist the sails, would mean to actually put them up so you no longer get any wind.

    Ever heard of "Hoist your sail when the wind is fair."? This idiom wouldn't even make sense if you were right.

  • @zyrkal
    @PersonalC0ffee
    and @Zyrkal
    thx that helped and Zyrkal i was also curious how it is in other languages ingame so thx twice to u
    the devs should defenitly do something against this missunderstanding because most nativ english speakers have it wrong^^

  • @thealcani But there is a lot of bad traduction. I think I will make a list of everything in french with the real term and send it to Rare.
    For exemple : One of the music instrument is right now "accordéon", but it's not right it's suppose to be "concertina".

    Hoist means to Furl the sail.

    Naval terminology is backwards from what you think it is when you hear "Raise the sails." It means to put them down so you can move.

    If hoist means to furl the sail, please explain "Hoist your sail when the wind is fair."

  • @personalc0ffee sagte in Raise the sails!?:

    The problem is that people do not think this way by default, so using the proper terms, which are backwards from normal thinking causes confusion.

    Hence I suggested to stick to naval terminology and add icons/symbols.

    I have also edited my posts so you can be quiet now.

    Do I have your permission to post in other threads?

    @crimsonraziel Icons and symbols?

    Little depictions, commonly used in software to aid and guide people through menus.

    All i know that in russian "Raising the sails!" mean "Move on" (when journey starts or ship simply begining to move) no matter you raising or lowering sails.
    Same to "Lover the sails" it means "Full stop".

  • @personalc0ffee Just put an unfurled full sail in front of the "Raise the sails!" command. I don't get what needs to be justified about this. o0
