Brigantine (Upcoming 3-person ship) photo assessment

  • Hey all, I've searched through the forums a bit and have not found anyone doing a breakdown of the Brigantine ship teased in the E3 trailer, so I did my own quick assessment with an image pulled from the trailer.

What we know about the Brig:
    -It is a 3-person ship.
-It has two masts, with two sails on the rear and one on the front.
-It is coming in July with Cursed Sail
-Historically, Brigantines were fast, maneuverable vessels favored by pirates.

What I have pulled from the image, some of which is obvious and some isn't.
-1: Easy one, but this is the crows nest. Sitting up front and giving scouts a nice overview of what is ahead of this ship.
-2: Based on the shape of the front cannon we see firing in the trailer (Middle image) I am confident that number 2 is a second cannon on the starboard side. This will make the Brig a 4 cannon vessel, 2 on each side. It also appears in the image that a crewman is manning that gun.
-3: Here we see for forward cannon that is firing in the trailer
-4: And the capstan located in the front of the Brig. This is a relatively large distance from the capstan to the helm, making solo play of the Brig time-consuming. It will also make boarding and dropping the anchor on the brig fairly easy.
-5: This assessment is interesting. the Brigantine looks to be a very flat ship and does not have a rear cabin like on the Galleon or Sloop. This leads me to believe it will be only a 2 deck ship, the below hold, and the top deck. This, I think, will make the Brig easy to sink, but should make getting below deck easy, as there is no complicated J hook to get below, or two levels of stairs.
-6: This is what I believe the outline of the hull will be, reinforcing the shallow hull.

  • This is going to be a prime choice of a ship. This gives the option to introduce a true, 3-man crew experience. Sometimes me and the guys can't get a 4th crew member, and usually down to 3. We wouldn't want to 3 man a Galleon, because essentially that 4th member is key to a seamless ship.

  • My predictions:

-Speed of the galleon, control of the sloop.

-Easy layout will make it easy to repair but length allows for more holes to potentially need patching, leading to being easily overwhelmed

That is a good assessment, though I think it may be faster than a galleon. Three sails and a shallow draft should allow it a nice speed.

@damatheus people are going ter love it :)

    How do you know that?

  • Thanks for posting the pics! The skeleton ship looks sick!

I hope the brigantine falls between the sloop and galleon in speed, maneuverability, and durability. If it ends up as fast or faster than a galleon then it should sacrifice durability and/or maneuverability.

  • @murkrage trust de cap’n..

I have been thinking about this as well.

I looked at it from the game-breaking angle though.

Introducing a 3rd ship has a chance to render other ships to become extremely unpopular.

I was thinking it's top speed will be in between sloop and galleon and agility will also be somewhere in between the other two ships since everything about it screams "in between" but that is just a guess obviously.

Either way a 3rd ship will be a welcomed addition to the game. I can't wait until there are 4,5,6+ ships out there for some variety!

I whish I could tell you what the brigantine has exactly but I’d get in trouble with RARE.

I am downloading the Pioneer install right now but obviously whatever is in there cannot be talked about. But I do hope they find a nice balance when introducing a new ship to the mix. I hope the sail adjustment time is noticeably longer then a sloop though so that this ship doesn't render the sloop useless. If anyone has watched any of my YouTube videos they know how much I love slooping it up!

    Undoubtedly!

  • @DutchDeadSchot Discussion of internal testing is not permitted outside of the appropriate areas. Please refrain from hinting at or discussing any content of the Pioneer test, as it is a violation of the NDA and can lead to your termination from the program.

  • @lady-aijou please send me a chat

  • Could be fun!

  • What I would like to see with the introduction of this new ship, is a feature that allows a crew to switch ship types, from a galleon to a brig, or a sloop to brig, all while staying in the same server.

That way, if a person is soloing in a sloop, gets trolled, he could switch to a galleon or brigantine, and do a BANG-A-RANG to his friends, and call some help.

Also, it makes taking over from a failed voyage much easier, instead of sailing around in a galleon solo.

    Thoughts?

A simple shipwright feature would be all it takes.

  • @nacmine I don't recommend that you even intimate what is being tested in the pioneer sessions. If it is so hard to resist talking about it, say nothing. That NDA is no joke.

    Remember: Loose lips sink ships.

Anyways, in regards to the OP @Damatheus I would say that the assessment seems sound. After all, the features are quite visible on the model. However I would disagree with the idea that the brigantine will be flat decked.

If you look where you parked the number 5 on the image, you can make out the helm. A little to the right you can see railings that angle downwards towards the main deck. However there is little to no room for space directly underneath the helm as it stands right now. So I think your assessment is accurate in that there will be only the one hatch to get down below deck and no split-level staircases to navigate like the sloop. The hatch will probably be parked between the two masts if it is like the galleon at all.

Furthermore an elevated helm allows the helmsman to see what is going on on deck. Having a completely flat deck would hamper that. Plus you have to have at least one sail blocking line of sight to the front of the vessel which the rear mast does quite nicely. Cooperation in the crew and all that.

  • @program-024 Yes I definitely agree the helm is elevated. It was in my original thoughts that the helm was on a small elevated platform, those thoughts just didn't get translated to my text. (I was a few rum deep buy then!)

    Excited to see it soon.

  • @NACmine Please refrain from posting any content referring to Pioneer testing outside of the appropriate forum. This is a violation of your NDA, and will result in your being removed from the program. You may not hint at, disclose, or otherwise discuss NDA protected content.

  • To be honest, only plays with 2 other people most of the time. Can’t wait for this! Having a fourth sometimes is horrid when they’re not up to your kinda gameplay.

Would be mostly likely sticking to this ship:) @weepaperboats

  • The Brigantine will likely be mine and my brother's go to ship as well. We can 2-person it easily enough (Hopefully) and still have room for with the 3rd wants to join.

    Excited
